Challenge: EDC Something New !GAW FROM TSARBOMBA PG. 5!

This week, I'm going to put my Queen to use. I'll carry my Mora as a heavy use knife, as the Queen is my babied knife, but I'm going to sharpen up my sodbuster too and try carrying that. Keep at it folks!

This thread continues to create fun for me - enjoy looking at what you guys are picking out to carry and it gets me digging into my own "knife stores" for those long neglected pocketknives. My Dad turned 80 yesterday, so I carried this Ulster 58OT in honor of that event - I'll carry it all week now. My Granddad gave it to my Dad in the late 60's (as best he can remember) and Dad gave it to me several years ago - it was in one of his old tackle boxes. OH

I've got one of those, OH. Mine is one of the "Prince Albert" knives. My dad sent in the two bucks with the coupon and gifted the knife to me when it showed up. I'm sure yours holds lots of memories too.

Gary, isn't it wonderful the way having something in your possession that belonged to a loved one so greatly increases it's joy and worth to you? Amplifies the connection. OH

I have been doing this for about two weeks already, and will continue through the end of March.

The knife I selected has been in my possession for at least 15 yrs (possibly a couple more). I have a decided preference for single blade knives...and, for me to even consider carrying a two blader, they have to open in opposing directions. (The only two I own are a half congress and the 2015 forum knife...and they rarely get carried.)

The knife has already "graced" these pages - it's the Case knife that got rusted up due to the celluloid(?) scales deteriorating.
This is what it looked like, then:

(I'll get the "after" pics up later - sorry...but I haven't taken them, yet)

Unfortunately, even after two weeks, I have not warmed to this knife at all. I put it in my pocket, and I use it, because I made the decision to do so; but it's a struggle to stick with it.

Hmmmm, the end of March is here; and I never did post the "after" pictures. I have not carried another traditional since I started this, somewhere around 7 weeks ago; and I find myself using it less and less. I've tried to like it, and on some level I do...just not a want to have it in my pocket and use it kind of like.
I'm not sure if I'm going to put it away, give it away, or __?__; but it won't be in my pocket tomorrow.

Interesting observation about "trying to like" a knife HH. Good for you for giving that knife a real chance; I've had the same experience with the four-blade Congress pattern - just cannot warm up to carrying that pattern - but I love the way it looks. OH

Well, as I said in my first post in this thread, I have a strong preference for single blade knives. With 3 blades, this one faced an uphill battle.
It really doesn't look too bad, now that I cleaned it up - as usual, the camera makes it look worse - and, if anything, I think it has a bit of character, now.

HH, that sure is a pretty sowbelly! I find myself having the opposite problem, and keep trying to carry my Case Slimline trapper but just can't.

Maybe you'd be interested in both my Case and Queen single blade trappers in exchange for that? I don't carry either at all so I feel bad having them tucked away. Send me a VM or email if interested.

For my work on the challenge, I've been carrying my Sodbuster for a heavy use knife. It's wonderful in all areas except that the weak backspring makes it get pulled outta place easily. I can't cut into wood without fear of closing the blade on myself when pulling the blade out of the cut. Otherwise I love the thing.

HH, if those are the same scales that are gassing aren't they going to rust up your blades/springs again? That is a nice looking Case - shame to have it marred by the scales. OH

I don't know, to be honest.
It sat, unused, for 15+ yrs - in its original box, which was stored in another box. It would seem to me that, for most issues caused by gases, ventilation is a key part of prevention. If it were to be packaged up again, I suspect it would (in time) end up rusted again. If it is kept out, and carried (perhaps even cleaned/lubricated) occasionally, would that still be the outcome?

HH, I don't know based on my own experience - I have read here that once celluloid begins off-gassing that it will keep on until the knife and scales completely deteriorate. It does appear that you have it arrested at the current time. It is a very nice looking knife, so it is too bad that Case chose to use celluloid for the handles. OH

Hello, all. My most profuse apologies for the delay in compiling and determining the long-awaited and neglected GAW results. It's been a fairly hairy couple of months and I was unfortunate enough to lose a lot of leisure time, among other things. I never forgot about my commitment, though, and once I found a little time to finally sit down and whittle the post numbers down to the challenge entries, I was able to finally pick a winner via random number generator. I figured it'd save me a little time instead of writing each qualifying post down on a little piece of paper and picking it out of a hat. :D Next GAW is gonna be much easier to select, that's for sure. :o

The winning post in the EDC Challenge GAW is... #71 - SadSappySucker! SSS, I've left you a visitor message so you can email me a mailing address.

Thank you to all who entered and took part in the challenge!

Interesting great thread. Thanks for the posts all. I might have to get in on this one tomarrow.

Thanks again Tsar! I look forward to giving the stockman a run at this challenge.
And I hope the smooth brown bone looks half as good in person as it does in the pics.

It's a "new classic" Case color as far as I'm concerned. I was vacillating between that one and a more atypical barnboard version of the 6318 but in the end I felt like this one really did rep "classic Case medium stockman" more than any of the others I have (except maybe for my "Case MM" millennium 3318 in yeller  -- think I'mma keep that one). Of course, since I got my amber bone with punch/CV it's the only 18 I carry but it did make me start carrying and appreciating the 18 more, so I think sending this beautiful fella along is the right thing to do. The more I look at the rich color and fantastic jigging the more seller's remorse I start to feel. :o Still I know it'll find a good home and a proper duty cycle.

Come to think of it, this one's actually a year older than my millennium edition. It's "vintage". :D

I'm fixin' to gear up for another challenge week. Early front runner for my "medium" difficulty attempt is the Case #54 trapper, though I do have a Queen #19 in ACSB and D2 that might make a solid argument. Thinking my "hard mode" challenge knife is going to end up being either a Sunfish or a Coyote, opposite extremes in both form and function that would both prove challenging; both are equally unattractive for "one knife for everything": duty. Bonus: In "hard mode" I'm leaving the modern in the car.

(Haven't settled on where the big SAK will lurk yet.)

Revived thread, new challenge.
Lubed, sharpened, and ready to go:

I admit, this was a bit of a peer pressure purchase for me. I wasn't really interested in the pattern until everyone seemed to love them, and they disappeared instantly from the exchange...
Anyways, I figured I should try one out. All of my challenges here have been single blades, and this is no different. My preference is really for at least two blades, but we'll see how it goes.

Beautiful 85 you've got there! Those were some spectacular knives. I got in a little late with my reservation for a 2 blade in bloodwood. I was bummed too, because I really have a thing for 2 blade knives with straight edge secondary blades.

Wow it's been a while since I've seen this thread on the first page! Congrats Erik and great GAW Tsar!

In the spirit of this thread, I'm going to play again, as it's been a while. I will carry the below knife, and only the below knife for the rest of the week and the weekend. I may be surprised, but I think I know how this will go. I hate this knife! Okay, hate is a strong word, and not really fair to the knife. I somewhat strongly dislike this knife. Some love the pattern, but it refuses to grow on me. Maybe this week will change that, maybe not, but it'll be a fun process.

Ladies and gentlemen... The Case Saddlehorn!

The kicker for this entry into the challenge, is that regardless how the week goes, this knife will become a GAW in another thread (so as not to clutter this one). If I still hate the knife, it's leaving the collection, and if the unthinkable happens, and we fall for each other, it's still leaving the collection, and I'll have to buy another - preferably one with different pants!

Howdy howdy all, havent had a comp running in a while :grumpy:.
Here's what i have been trying out more and more and more (and more) and liking.
Case knives!

SS stockman i used to loathe carrying, now it finds itself in the sheath a lot.

My trade knife from Harald, which, after a sheepsfoot mod, has been walking the beat with the best of them.

Soon enough I'll finish the Frontier and carry that for a month or so.

Good day to you all!
