Challenge: EDC Something New !GAW FROM TSARBOMBA PG. 5!

Thank you Nature Boy, that's what I aim for, because if I don't use it and give it character, I'm not using it so I should pass it along somehow.

I don't think I can truly judge a knife until we've spent some time with an apple.

The 85 makes for a fine paring knife.

SadSappySucker - FYI I have been stymied twice now trying to get your package in the mail. I ran late out of work yesterday getting to the package store so I could pad out the box, then today as I was preparing to leave for the post office (and drop the last 2 Father's Day packages in the mail, to boot :grumpy:) we had an emergency at work and I was again stuck. I have everything ready to rock and I just need to print the label and drop it off, so I'm going to try to get it in the mail first thing tomorrow for ya.

I've also been poring over my trappers trying to figure out which one I'll use for the challenge. If all goes as planned, next week I should find myself using one trapper for all cutting tasks all week long.

Fantastic stockman and sowbelly, Connor. That acrylic on the latter is pretty crazy-looking but I like it. Love that #85, Nature Boy, and that crimson jigged bone is looking pretty fresh, Crazy Canuck. Looking forward to rejoining the challenge!

Don't worry Tsar. It'll get here when it gets here.

I need to get rocking on this challenge again. I have a few knives that are in need of some attention. I'm planning a giveaway in the future, and there are a few knives that really haven't ever seen any consistent carry. It's time to bight the bullet and weed out the ones that need to find a new home.
There is also that part of me that romanticizes the act of using one knife and one knife only, and I get a little taste of that every time I do a challenge like this. But until then I guess I'll just live vicariously through you guys.

So... Unfortunately, I didn't make it quite as long as I had planned with this knife. I made it through Thursday, but Friday morning, the call of another knife made me leave the Saddlehorn at home. And today, I almost went back to it, but a Sowbelly came along instead. I think we'll say this weeks' challenge is over for me :)

Some thoughts -

This knife still isn't for me, and I don't think it's the knifes' fault. We're just not fully compatible.

What did I like about the knife?

  • The blades. They are awesome! Love the profile and swedging on the clip, and the skinner is surprisingly useful. Both blades perform really well for me. I don't really use my knives for food prep, but that skinner blade just begs to help out in the kitchen.
  • The covers are also nice. I would prefer more uniform dyeing, but the texture of the bone jigging is very pleasing. If I were to do it all over again though... I'd probably opt for the pocketworn red bone option.
  • The size. It's almost perfect for the size of knives I like to carry. Not too big, not too small. Call me Goldilocks, this one is juuuust right.

But wait a minute?! With all those pluses above, and all really solid pluses - Why, oh why, is this knife not for me?!

The ergos. For about the first three fingers, the ergos are great. Unfortunately for this knife, but fortunately for me, I was born with pinky fingers. That hump on the end of the handle always leaves me looking for a place to put the pinky. Do I choke up on the blade a bit, and get a full four finger grip? Do I spread the grip out, and try to get the pinky to wrap around behind the hump? It was never a fast grab without thinking... I always had to fiddle with the grip, and pick one depending on what was comfortable for the task at hand. It really bugged me. Once I did settle on a grip though, the ergos were acceptable. Just not a very natural feeling for my hand, if that makes sense.

So there we have it. My GAW will wrap up on Monday morning, and this one will be off to a new home, where hopefully my issues with it aren't an issue with the new owner.

It was fun to participate in this challenge thread again, and maybe we'll try again in the near future.

:D

I think I see your problem. I like to use a knife whenever possible too, but cereal is really much easier to eat with a spoon...[emoji6]
Maybe try a hobo.

I have been pocketing my unused Cases for a while, and love them. They're on top of the "nightstand" aka craftsman rollaway toolbox, ready for the day. The sowbelly is in my pocket now, but i might swap it out for the day in favor of something smaller.

I just received the medium stockman, and MAN this thing is a looker! The brown bone is really top shelf stuff, and Case did a wonderful job on the bolster polishing.

As I told Tsar, I was reluctant to accept this guy, because I usually neglect my stainless knives. So starting tomorrow this will be my challenge knife. I'm hoping to knock away some of the prejudices I have towards stainless by forcing myself to carry it.
Thanks again! I really couldn't be happier.

Looks great SSS!
I ended my challenge on Saturday. I really wanted to fall in love with the single 85, but it didn't really happen...don't love it, don't hate it... It's a heck of a slicer, and I can definitely see its usefulness. I think I'm just realizing that I'm not a single blade kind of guy. I think I would be happier with it as a main blade as opposed to a single. I'd be interested in possibly trading it for the double blade variety.

You are very welcome, sir! I'm glad you like it and I'm glad that it got into the hands of someone who will appreciate it and carry it. There are three Case stock knives that rotate into my pockets, including two 6318s (my "ace", the 6318PU in CV and jigged amber bones -- the companion piece to my front-line 6375 -- plus a standard 6318 in stainless and very nice red jigged bone) so that fella, which has probably spent nearly all of the last ~17 years in its box cutting nary a thing, was unfortunately one of the "odd stockmen out". It is just too pretty to keep in a box. I think you'll find that the thin, slicy Case stainless (and that wonderful Turkish clip) is up to a whole host of jobs.

It really is a beautiful knife. It doesn't deserve to be cooped up in a box or a safe, there should be plenty of CF & CE going on!

Since it just arrived today, into the pocket it goes. I think this one will be a good addition to the challenge. I'm going to try keeping this one in the pocket until my Lambfoot arrives in the mail. With the possible upcoming Canada Post strike, that could be in a couple days if I'm lucky, or it could be a while.

I'm hoping it's at least a week, as I've been wanting this one for a while. I love stockmans, but rarely use the spey blade. Love the punch on my HJ and SAK Electrician, so getting the punch instead of a spey on a stockman sounded like a great idea!

That #18 case stockman is really one of my all time favorite patterns and regularly pushes much "nicer" GEC knives out of my pocket, it is just so slim yet versatile and case does a good job on their bone!!

Well shoot, I haven't carried this more than 4 times since I got it when they were released so I guess I will take the challenge with this behemoth!! I reserved this cover sight unseen and actually think I would have prefer ANY other cover now that I have it lol, Just dont really like the flat sides. We will see though. I was thinking of picking up a buck 110 sheath for it but I cant really wear that at work so I will be carrying it in a KSF pocket slip

It certainly is, and they certainly do. I just so happen to have a 6318PU in me pocket at this very second, in my favored amber jigged bone.

Those #98s are no joke, size-wise. I'm surprised you don't like those covers, the grain and the coloring is outstanding! I guess the texture in hand is the key sticking point, maybe a little fine-grit sanding could make it more your speed? I look forward to your summation after you finish the challenge.

I bought this Farmer awhile back on the exchange and it just won't leave my pocket. I have saw a lot of posts praising the Farmer as a perfect EDC and just from pictures I didn't understand what all the hype was about but now that I own one I totally understand. I am going to find some more of them both new and in discontinued colors and become a hoarder. :D

Update on 85: I'm carrying it again today, so maybe I liked it more than I thought...

Hmm, looks like I'll try to carry one of my fancy stockmans, and use it to full purpose. I think I'll be getting rid of the Sod Buster in a GAW.
