Chat Subforum for the Busse Forum?

Do you like the idea of a chat sub-forum?

  • Yes, I would like to be able to read the knife related content exclusively.

I noticed that the Himalayan Imports forum has a separate forum for chat threads, chat being threads that have nothing to do with the knives themselves.

Being that this forum is becoming ever more popular and moving faster by the day, I think it might keep the forum cleaner and keep the more relevant information on the front page longer to keep the chat threads in a subforum.

I realize that much of the Busse appeal lies around the comradery and drunken chatting between enthusiasts, and I have nothing against that. I'm just throwing an idea out there to see how others feel about it.

I think it would make it harder to miss key information if there wasn't so much non-knife related chatting going on in the midst of it.

I like it all mixed together. INFI, guns, cigars, scotch, etc.

I don't mind setting up an off-topic Busse Bar or whatever you guys want to call it. Come up with a name.

Drunken Debates LOL

...Oh WAIT!!! Porky's LMAO! ;)

Forgot to add... Voted no, just having a little fun with the name thing.

I will say this - a chat only forum would be better for the "long term" of the site - I don't mind pruning away old "chat" threads in a chat forum by date, but when they are intermingled with the knife content, I'm kinda boned and can't get rid of any of the deadwood.

I guess that this would be worth asking while we vote on this, Spark... What time frame can we expect to look at for thread life expectancy if this "chat" forum were to be implemented? I mean, how long would these threads remain before you wanted to prune older ones out? A month, 3 months, 6 months...? :)

Probably 6 months to a year. I mean, how much off topic stuff needs to hang around?

I hear ya. I was just curious as to what you had in mind. 6 months to a year sounds reasonable.

Actually, that makes sense since it's your storage space we're sucking up. Lots of good knife info was lost a couple years back when you overhauled the system, but it had to be done.

Much better to lose the drunken chatter.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else here, but in the interests of easing strain on BF.com's servers & improving the "long term" operations of this site, I'd be willing to give it a try... If it didn't work out for some reason, such as a "deflating" of sorts in the way that we've all come to appreciate this main sub-forum for lively chatter, would you allow a return to the way it is now? :)

I personally don't hang around for the "whatcha drinking", "Go *insert football team*", or "I've got hemmoroids" threads. They're totally lame if you ask me. There's at least 10 or 12 off topic threads on page 1 at all times. No offense meant to anyone, but I could give a hoot what or how much anyone's drinking here (I'm a recovering alcoholic), football teams, anyone's personal or family health issues/problems, or anything else that's not knife related-ish.

Seriously, no offense, but OT threads are beginning to take over this forum, and I personally am sick of them. I'm glad this came up cuz I keep seeing more and more off-topic threads cropping up daily and I think there's a demand for an off-topic forum. It would make me happy to have them relocated so I wouldn't have to weed through them.

i like it the way it is.

the "off topic" threads are a main reason many of us have gotten to know each other. i love talking about knives as much as anyone else, but our personalities really come out (good or bad) in the other discussions. i think it is what makes this forum special, and why there are more viewers here than is typical anywhere else but in general.

if there were a separate forum, most of us would be there most of the time. so questions posed here would go unanswered longer than they do now.

as long as i have been a member here, this forum has been pretty much the same regarding the off topic discussions. they are also the reason i have stayed and participated as much as i have.

I have to go with whats good for bladeforums on this one. while I don't mind the off topic humor and general thread meandering, I would prefer the knife related topics to stay vs. general chat threads.

how much funnel cake does a man really need?

I say Down Styphon! to such a thought. This subforum has a distinct personality and when you split a personaility you just get a disorder.

It doesn't bother me when a knife thread breaks into a bourban discussion, and I don't even drink that fire-water. There is enough nanny-statism in the world without forcing the Busse mods to interject in the middle of a thread and remind people to, "Stay on topic guys or I'm going to have to move this thread to the chat forum".

Yuck.
