What else would you expect from a quasi-governmental monopoly that the taxpayers are forced to support. No need to pay for your mistakes when you can just have a law passed to exempt you from liability. :(

it will make no differance but I sent this to them, at least it makes me feel better

"this equipment malfunctions causing damage to a few pieces of mail"
you fail to realize that this stuff belongs to people..you are forcing us to
get pay for insurance or extra services for your incompetence, it's
extortion for more money right? ..be it your people or machinery..it's not
morally right to just say sorry dude we have your money and product to
bad....

I didn't insure it but to take my $8.10 also for shipping with no refund
is out right steeling.. you have my product with in your system your box got destroyed,
I want it found and returned.. your note on the
label that was delivered, shows the product is still in you possession.. I
simply want it back.. is I said I gave you money for a service and you did
not fulfill your end of the deal..
I sent a package to be delivered by you and you did not fulfill your
obligation, I want my money back for lack of service and services not
rendered.. ..
I don't care what your rules say,,, you took my money with no
problem...

Hi Dan, seems this is not an isolated incident. I received a package from one of our favorite suppliers (D.E. ;) ) that was "supposed" to contain cable for some blades. Same condition as yours (nothing inside), same letter of, and I use this word loosely, " ? explanation ? " The only one that made good on the deal was Darren, USPS just gave me an oops, sorry. Received a second package recently, the tape on the box end had been cut, the end tore open and just stuck back together. Not very securely I might add, no new tape, just the sticky that was left on the torn open end. I feel very lucky to have received what was in the box, nothing appeared to be missing, but WTF ??? Yeah, I feel your pain, maybe, just maybe, they'll make it right. I wouldn't hold my breath.......but you already knew that :)

i totaly understand your anger and ya its bad and it sucks but sending somethign via USPS does nto guarentee it will get there perfectly, there is a reason they offer insurance, because s*** happens and if you are worried about it you can take precautions.

yes its ridiculous but seriously you use something that has risks and ways to counter the risks that you have chosen not to use then when the risk becomes a reality you get angry. sorry but that is not logical.

now please do not take this as a being rude, mean, condescending, or in any way ragging on you but im just trying to get my point across and i liek to be blunt.

i do wish the best of luck resolving this, dont forget the insurance next time

Every couple months we get what I lovingly refer to as a "postal body bag" of damaged mail deliverd to us. Some of it are bills from up to two months ago and the rest is just mangled damaged mail. One of the body bags had moldy envelopes since they were put in wet and sealed in the plastic bag.

Two years ago I bought an autographed poster of Clint Eastwood and they were supposed to ship it UPS but instead it went USPS. I got home from work and noticed something hanging almost two feet out of my mailbox in the pouring rain. That was my poster.

I can not post the adequate phrasology of what I think about our private government sanctioned "circle jerk" AKA USPS. They have outlived thier usefulness and are a gleaming example of why we should have open competition for all mail service. They can not even ship overnight without the help of FedEx.

Sorry to hear about your little mess Dan, I think all of us have jacked over by them at one time or another.

This must happen a lot, since they don't wanna refund it. Otherwise if it happened rarely they would offer to pay it.

And the insurance costs are a rip off. I figure they can lose every 10th knife I send out and I will still save money over buying thier over priced insurance.

Sorry to hear about that Dan.
USPS as been Very good to me! I have been sending 1 to 6 flat rate Priority boxes weighing 40 - 50 lbs along with a few 3' long heavy packages almost every day for the last six months with only one box returned because I got the address wrong and a couple long boxes slow getting to the customer (Parcel Post). NO other problems. Thay's over 5000 lbs of W2 sent through my little one person Post Office. I also have been sending high end knives Express Mail for well over 10 years with NO problems. I did have problems with UPS and FedEx. The PO service/people are just better at my end I guess. I don't insure any packages, I have seperate insurance for my knives. I've also sent a few packages of steel overseas with NO problems. If I counld not use the Post Pffice to ship, I would not be selling W2 steel.

And another thing. I can send 50 pounds of W2 in a Priority flat rate box with delivery comp for $8.60 anywhere in the USA, price that with UPS/FedEx :)

Heya Don, not to hijack a thread, but how do you go about seperatly insuring the knives you send via USPS? Sounds interesting to me. BTW, I have also received just an empty (actually just a piece of a box) box from the usps. I do believe it is time for private industry to take over and let the best company prevail.

Registered Mail is a cheaper way to insure things. The box has to be completely wrapped in brown tape or craft paper with no seams. I just shipped a package insured for $25000 for around $41.

http://www.collectinsure.com/ My knives are covered everywhere, except overseas shipping. It's cheap also.

I'm all for private industry, it's just strange that UPS and FedEx have been problematic (lost, stolen packages) and I know UPS/FedEx will not put a drop center in Success Mo :)

I think everyone has a "shipping" story. The insurance/decared value fee is a joke.

They will gladly charge you for whatever value you want to declare...but getting them to pay it is a completely different story. I was so frustrated with these scum bags, I called the local news to get their "consumer protection" hit team involved. They came to the shop with a camera crew and the shiney toothed anchor guy and did a story on damaged shipments. The whole story turned out to be a joke.

If you do a google search such as: "UPS sucks", "fedex damage claim denial", ..or anything associated with a shipping company's service ...you can easily find many stories of them acting in bad faith when it comes to lost and damaged items. Some of the stories are just heart breaking.

I once saw a story where a small shop had enough...and took fedex to court over a claim denial. A jury awarded the them something like 1.5 million dollars for a $15,000 claim. There was expert testimony from ex-fedex employees that testified about the inside practice to avoid paying claims.

They all claim to have a successful delivery rate of about 95-97% with out damage or loss. For me, this equates to about 2-3 claims a year. If it is less than $100, there ussually isn't any problem....but over that...and good luck. My time and effort is better spent by replacing the order and cutting your losses. Export shipments are even more sticky...guess who gets stuck with the customs/broker fees for an empty box.

I hate the scum bags.....but we depend on them...and are forced to play by their rules.

Wheeewhh! I feel so much better now!

Good luck Dan!

you want to hear something messed up i saw my mail lady opening my government letters the other day in front of my mail box. so i walked up to her and asked her why she just opened my mail. well after a long argument she makes it seem like i am blind and she was trying to help me right. so i go and complain at the post office of course topically jail mentality i don't no any thing we don't have forums for that sir. so now today i am going to head office with my lawyer and we are not leaving with out 1 person in hand cuffs and the unhelpful lady behind the counters job. thank god i have a nice job so i can pay my family lawyer to do this

Its not just with shipping packages though, its the entire mail service. The other night I went to the post office to mail my girlfriend a Vday card and I was waiting behind the truck that picks up the mail out of the boxes in front of the P.O. When he left I went to place the card in the box and I saw a huge stack of mail hanging out. I went to push the mail on in and noticed that the box was clogged. There was so much there, that some of it fell out onto the ground. I picked up this thick stack of envelopes(to put back in the box) and noticed that they were what I presumed to be paychecks. I called the post office the next day and they said that they contracted out for the drivers and they didn't know which one it was.

If I ship a package for my T-shirt business, I use UPS. They may cost a bit more but at least most of their handling is by hand and they really take care of us. If we have a problem they resolve it ASAP and they give 100 bucks of insurance "free".

I know some of the people that work at the local P.O. a lot better than I know the people at UPS, and all they ever tell me is "I'll look into it" on the few occasions that I am forced to deal with them. They use every excuse they can in the name of "counter terrorism" to "search" (really pillfer) through any package they see fit.

I can't stand the USPS. There is no excuse for someone to be as disrespectful toward someone else's private correspondence. Its just uncalled for.

For what it's worth, I have had problems with UPS, Fed EX, and the USPS. On at least one occassion, each has lost or destroyed a package I have sent through them. Fortunately, none of the lost packages were worth very much. I gave up fighting in each case because my time was worth more than the value of the packages in question.....I just hope I never have this happen with a more expensive package.

had ups destroy a preamp 3 straight times, ship it to me its broken, send it back-he shipped it out again and they broke it,so i shipped it back and so on-

he did the fighting with ups over the $$ he spent fixing it-
they can do more damage to a box than a elephant on crack-

he has a new remote option for my new preamp-i just wont send it back-
