Chopper - WIP + a folder. UPDATE CHOPPER FINISHED!

Great chopper, very nice folder...

But I hope you know that it will be very weak liner-lock? The vertical distance between pivot and locking area of liner/tang is the most important factor for lock strength.

Thou says I, who can't even properly fit a blade in a piece of wood :) and also Bob Terzuola :D

Thanks Idaho!

You mean my notch isn't big enough? I'll have to keep that in mind for my next one. I've not planning on doing any battoning or anything so hopefully is will be strong enough for light EDC use. It sure feels strong though.

From Terzuola's "Tactical Folder"

The vertical distance is influencing the strength of lock.
It is not the size of the notch - you would need different shape of blade tang to begin with.
But, like I said, I am only good at theory :D and full of respect for your knives. And flip-flops :D

Looking Good Tim,

Have you got Bob's book on tactical folders? I have a copy if you want to borrow it mate? Did your blades make it back from Hills yet? Still waiting on mine. Thought they would have been here friday.

Unfortunately no. I was hoping I'd get them by friday to so I could work on them over the weekend. I wouldn't mind having a look at the book.

Nothing to add. Just enjoying the thread.

Nice work Tim, very impressive chopper mate !

How many HP is your grinder can you show us a pic of the whole machine ?

I have no idea what HP it is. If i push hard enough it slows down though. I had a bit of look for a something tell me what HP it was but couldn't find anything. The mark at all i found on it was what seems to be a Japanese character under the bed.

Sorry for the sideways pictures. It did it automatically.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I'm still waiting to get my last batch of knives back for HT before i send the chopper away.

Okay! I finally did some more work on the folder today and it's getting exciting (for me anyway). I'm working on getting the scales and bolsters attached.

I sandwiched all my pieces together. Marking and drilling the holes that my scales will screw into.

Tapping the holes for the scales.

Marking the holes through onto my very dark macassar ebony scales.

Cut and drilled a couple of bits of Ti out for my bolsters.[/B]

Scales fastened, ready to profile a bit.

Profiled down to shape. I still need to cut them down to make space for the bolsters though. I use a white pencil to colour in whats going to be cut out to see what it'll look like.

Next I'll have a go at fitting my bolsters to the scales. Do you think the pivot through and middle of the bolster and a tight fit against the scales will be enough to stop the bolsters moving around? I was going to tap from the inside so you wouldn't see any screws through the bolsters but i only have through-tap.

Gtt one side fitted. There's a small gap between the bolster and scale so i might put a spacer between them to hide it. I don't want to make the scale all over again.

Screwed the over sized bolster on.

Scale fitted. Stating to look like a folder!

Looking very nice Tim.

That ebony looks very nice. Book posted yesterday. Let me know when you get it.

Matt

Thanks Matt. Got the book today.

I think I'm pretty much on the home strech for my folder now. This arvo i fitted the scale and bolster on the other side, flushed it all up and cleaned up the profile.

Bolster and scale fitted on the otherside. Second time was much easier and I managed to get it gap free.

You can see i went a little too far working the profile on the grinder. It started eating into the stop pin  I didn't even notice until i was taking the photos.

I think all i really have to do now is shape the handle and shmick the whole thing up a bit (and the HT of course, but i'm not doing that).

Looking great man! I just ordered a grinder and my wife's only caveat was that I have to make her a pink folder within the next 12 months (not because she likes pink but because I hate it)... I didn't know if I could do it but your folder WIPs help me think if you can do folders with the tools you have then I should definitely be able to...

Love the updates and multiple pictures - keep it up!

By the way, what the crap does "arvo" mean?

Great Work Tiiim. Your attention to detail work shows in your photos, the chopper looks amazing! I can't wait to see the finished product. and Ditto on the Flip flops & thongs

amcardon- "arvo" = afternoon/evening

Haha, thanks mate. I think definitely give a folder a go. It's very rewarding when things are working.

Arvo is slang for afternoon as ryan said.

Thanks ryan. Nice of you to say.

Got to shaping the handle up today. I ground an angle right around it and it was looking good. Then i went to start rounding it over and kinda wish i didn't. I think it would have looked better with just a small angle all round. Oh well. Next time.

The other side. I'm going to put a thumb stud where the mark is on the blade.

I've been bitten by the folder bug latley. I started making this the other day. An opaque friction folder.
