Choppers What do you USE???

I am still a Busse Noob and trying to learn. I got some great knives in from the grab bags and I am trying to figure out what to keep and get rid off. I am not a collector yet. (hopefully one day) so the blades I will be keeping will be my GO TO USERS. I fell in love with Busse so much during the mystery bags that I am basically going to liquidate all my fixed blades and only keep the ones that were gifts or the BUSSE's, and my nice folders too :)

With that said a lot of the Choppers out there are all very very similar with only minor differences in them. SO I am trying to figure out which ones are worth keeping and parting with to get the next, go to blade in that category. So for me in the ex-large chopper range, 11"ish , and large 9"ish chopper blade what works best??? Who has used them and with what results??? I think I would like the NM Battle mistress but if the battle saw or boom parang will do just as good or almost as good I can free up that extra coin for the NMFSH and NMSFNO if you get my drift. SO with that being said. I need to decide which knife from each group to go with, but there are so many different opinions. Of all the ones in the PIC that I currently own the grips all feel great. But the double talon grip feels amazing!!! with ASH-2 and Battle saw second to the DT but very close to each other.

I generalized for a lot of the families because I know some have several different versions that are all very similar.

As of now, I am leaning towards the Boom Parang and NMFSH and sell or trade the other big blades I have, and then decide between a NMFSH, SFNO, and AHS-1 and most likely keeping two out of that group.

Any and all information and guidance will be apprecieated!!! Also, I feel like a Boom Parang with some teeth in the spine would be a great compromise for me :)

Also, not sure what that blade type is called on the Battle Saw where it is leveled, or tiered up??? Do those small levels affect its ability to cut? Deeper or shallower???

How do these stack up for 11"ish length:
Battle Saw
Boom Parang
NMFBM
BM

How do these stack up for 9.5 ish length:
NMFSH
Double Talon
ASH-2
BME

Thanks in advance everyone!!!

It really depends on you, what works and feels good in the hand.

For me, the 1311 is hands down the best chopper I've used. It beats my satin NMFBM easily.

My user choppers:
1311
1111
CGFBM
NMFBM
NMFSH
Boom Parang
BG SFNO

All work well for me, some better than others.

IMHO, Ditch the Straight handles and keep the Ergo's /Fusions.

For chopping... Your hands will thank you!

Good luck,

Lawrie.

P.S. Great scores BTW.

Correction /Addition to my last,

Keep anything in the Basic line up. Best choppers out there. Personal favorite (Until the BB13 arrives) B11.

Lawrie

I agree on ergonomics, but all of the handles are comfortable to me and I am leaning towards the angled handles already because of physics but still want to be informed as much as possible.

Any reason some work better than others? blade thickness, steel? Blade angles? Does the boom parang or battle saw work just as well as the others forego spending the extra coin on the pricier ones?

Any best bang for buck recommendations?

I have heard good things about the 1311. Is that because its two inches longer and achieves a higher velocity or because of the extra two inches in length?

Basic 11 is a good chopper for the $. Bushwhacker Mistress, double talon Mistress, boom parang, hognose war sword

It has actually been brought to my attention that quality chopping knives have a stronger steel with a more acute edge that out chop many axes. I do have a nice axe but if I'm trying to legitimately chop down a good sized tree, I am going gas powered...

Mine are:
1311
1111
DTBM (agree that the grip on these is amazing, even better after I hand-sanded mine)
Boom Parang
B8LE (a bit short for a chopper, but hits bigger than I expected)

On order:
BME2
CG BB13

Would like to try, but may not buy:
CG, NMFBM
MOABOLO
B11

Ooooooo,

You was the 1st one to git one were ya.;) When you get bored of it let me borrow it! Please.:D

Honestly don't chop a ton of trees unless there in my way on a trail, or clearing trees around a deer stand. Which is fairly often but most the trees I'm gonna attempt to cut are 6-8" round and can use something as small as a BT6 for that. It's got heft. Any bigger trees I'm getting the chainsaw.

Out of what you got I'd want the BS and the Ratweiler. BG Mistress is good too.

I am seeing a trend here with the 1311, but I don't have one at the moment.

How does the Boom Parang compare to the DTBM? the Extra length or different weight make a noticeable difference?

Anyone try the Battle Saw? Seems like no one uses that one lol.

No love for the MountainManDu? Honestly for the money my MMD out-chops many many other Busse/kin blades in the same size I have owned. That SR-77 steel makes even the dryest hardwood start to sweat bullets whenever I draw it from my sheath. Just snagged my second on the exchange and they are my go-to choppers! Cheers!

I haven't used my Battle Saw or my ABM, but I love my NMFSH. But then again I'm more mid size blades or edc. When it comes to processing fire wood, chainsaw and splitter :D:D So many great Busse and kin choppers out there that I'm sure everyone can find one they love

Its gotta be Res-C for my users

out of all of them the 1311 is by far the most used. My Chophouse Lean Cut is also earning its keep

I kept my 1311. And bought a second one.
:-)
Sold the rest.
I credit it's ability to :
Thin blade
13" long
Rubber handle, super comfortable.
Lots of forward weight.
Not as heavy as an INFI blade. Makes it nice to swing all day.

Chopper!?!?! . Had a few close calls with axes. Not too good, when you're out in the boondocks. I used to own a fine, slow combustion, fireplace. Batton logs with my grand old NMFBM

Old photo..

Great input so far everyone!!! I wonder if anyone knows of anyone who has used the battle saw yet?

To use as a dedicated chopper do yall think lighter and thinner or heavier and thicker? Thicker has more inertia but can turn into a brick at the end of the day, and lighter may not carry enough oomph at times and require more work. What experience have we learned?

Anybody prefer a 9" ish blade?

The 1311 is awesome. If I could only keep one, that would probably be it.

I want to keep them all though. :D

I do a lot of clearing work. A lot of branches and woody vines up to forearm size. Most of the wood I chop is green and generally they all do the work with ease.

The DT is probably last in pure chopping due to being the shortest, but mine is thinned out and convexed so it really bites deep now. Plus, of the 4 above it's the most "knifey," comfortable choil grip, good balance, seems like more of an all 'rounder to me than the others.

The BP is lighter and faster, really fun to chop with. I chopped through one larger deadfall today that was laying across a trail. Pretty hard stuff, but still only took a few minutes with the parang. Still getting used to it since it's my newest blade and different, but so far it's been a nice option for the standard chop/split/baton stuff I do.
