Choppers What do you USE???

Does anyone have any inputs on what they think or know would be a better chopper between .25 infi and .187 SR-101??? Using the same everything except, the only differences being thickness and blade material.

Edge geometry, blade geometry, weight and balance all play into it. Flat ground 1/4" INFI might waythe same as 3/16" saber ground sr101.

I understand those concepts, what I was trying to illustrate was that BOTH knives being equal in all categories: Grind, Length, edge geometry, handle with the only difference being one is 1/4 INFI and the other 3/16 sr101, (so there is a potential with weight difference but if there is, it would be consistent) the only degree of variation is the thickness and steel type.

With that being said, anyone with experience in scenarios like that, with any feed back would be very informative.

i used my thick cut chop house on a rafting/camping trip a couple weeks ago. split some dogwood for our cooking fire. worked great and fairly lightweight for a chopper

Gotcha, but your scenario does not exist. Two busse knives of the exact same geometry, with different thicknesses of different steels do not exist. At least not that I can think of any. Can you think of one? The closest thing may be a double talon BM in SR101 vs an ASHBM? that would be the closest I could come up with

Like Cobalt said, that scenario doesn't exist.

If it did, the steel wouldn't matter, both are excellent. INFI is just the icing on top in terms of impact resistance and rust resistance.

Regarding the thickness, 3/16" would bite a little deeper due to edge geometry and wouod excell at light to medium work. 1/4" wouldn't bite as deep per say but hit a lot harder and would excel at heavier work.

Both would be excellent tools and you wouldn't understand the difference unless you go out in the field and get experience with both.

BB13 which is about to be released or at least some time in the next 12 months or so...

Maybe, maybe not. At first glance, one would say the BB13 in its two variations might be that choice. However, Busse may throw a curve ball. I believe with the Chophouse knives, when they changed thicknesses, they changed grind height. Maybe to keep the SAME edge geometry? Not having both of them, I don't know. Conversely, I DO have the two thicknesses of Ratweilers from O2W, and when they changed thickness, they maintained grind height, so the edge geometries are quite different.

Who knows what they'll do with the BB13. Or, for that matter, the BG FSH release.

Thanks for the info!! Good point on the Ratweiler's I have a thin one on the way and I really like my thick one.

The main reasons I was asking the above questions was to determine if a BB13 is in my future and if so which one. The INFI looks like a monster but if the lighter sr101 bites just the same and hits faster it may be the better choice, or maybe the INFI because it hits harder and more oomph, lol, this is what keeps going back in forth in my head. I am just trying to convey the inner shenanigans in my head to everyone... Like ooo peice of candy, ooo peice of candy, ooo peice of candy lol. I was hoping someone would have some insite or experience to help me come to the conclusion... And yes I know...... when in doubt get both....

oh look more candy...

Lol! Yeah… SQUIRREL!

I've not been at this near as long as a lot of guys on here. But what I've seen is pretty much all their knives are good. GREAT. It just comes down to preferences. I generally don't like to swing .25" steel. There just RARELY is that need in my life. BUT, SOMETIMES.….… it feels so good to wail on a piece of wood, or split a round, with a big ole heavy chunk of sharpened prybar. And with the edges BUSSE has been putting out lately, the thickness seems to becoming less a compromise.
I ordered the thick INFI on the BB13, after going back and forth in my head much as you. I could have just as easily gone for thin. But my thought process is, thin is a nice slicer. But I'm never gonna use a BB13 as a slicer. And I've got 13" machetes. I don't need (ok, nor want) another thin-ish blade that length. But a quarter-inch thick piece of 13" INFI to pound with… what's not to like about that?

I personally want thick for a chopper, thin is just asking for problems during extreme use. Also when the choice is Infi vs SR101, Infi is and will always be the clear winner in every category except price. Best of luck in your adventures.

And in the case of the BB13...only $170 more for INFI...yes plz

My 1311 is my go to chopper now!

No Busse content, but I just came across this video that compares Flat vs. Saber grinds on a couple of Ontario models.
