Choppers What do you USE???

My ASHBM makes my 1111 jealous in the chopping department...

Do you attribute that to anything in particular?

My 1111 hits the hardest of the choppers I've tried (forward weight, .25" saber, dropped handle,) but I looked up the ASHBM and saw they're listed as 5/16ths, thought they were also quarter inch stock at first. Still wouldn't think they'd be too far apart if they had similar edge geometries though.

There are so many Busse's that are great choppers. I think the ASH-2 is somewhat underrated, and it's an excellent all around knife. My preference for best all around knife is still the NMFBM, but as you have seen there are lots of great options.

Probably just the weight behind the blade. My ASHBM bites deeper every swing. Both blades still have factory edge, for what it's worth. Both are certainly great choppers either way.

It is all about the micarta/g10 handle design. The biggest problem is when the handles are either too thin or worse, to thick as with magnum handles.

Thanks man,

After thinking about it more, I guess being 25% thicker the overall mass advantage on the ASHBM would be pretty significant even after discounting the flat vs. saber grinds.

Game Warden makes for a nice chopper in the kitchen ;) :p

Starting at Chopweiler/Ratweiler/711/SARsqatch size everything up that I got my grabby paws on...

I hear you ..... R3 ( love that blue G10 handle) in the kitchen every day!!!! Scrapivore as second.

I'd love to EDC the R3. I've got a HACK WARDEN but I'm waiting for Busse to bring back a standard, round butt, warden.

I use a lot of choppers including cold steel, marbles, condor, sycko, rats, busse, siegle, Becker, woods mans pal, HI, Ontario, Kershaw, BHK, bark river... And I have sold a lot of my users. I say that because although I chop wood weekly often I rotate them so much I can't say what my favorite busses is but here is a try.

I used a chopweiler for years, great chopper.
I use the chophouse most often now
I have tried and know the 1111 and 1311 to be awesome.
I Need to try the dtbm next :)
And the ash2 looks like a great knife. Reminds me of the length of early battle mistresses. I need to give it some real use

I like all of these suggestions. I picked up a 1311 this am on the exchange to check out :)

I am really interested in seeing what the boom parang and battle saw can do. They are so new there isn't a lot of feedback on them yet. I like both the BP and BS a whole lot, but I don't need both, even though I want both.

YouTube or Google it. Sometimes, a lot of times, people will post videos. I know there's videos of the BS up.

I put up a few vids recently of the Boom Parang and 1311. They are my first attempt at vids. I'm not doing anything hard, but since I shot them prior to reprofiling the BP, the videos show them both at work with the factory edges.

These work good.

Great pics and videos!!! How did the parang work after you profiled it? What did you use to profile, and what geometry did you use?

It looks like they all have a place now :) to me it seems like the grail in the chopping category would go to MOAB #1, #2 & 3 then tie but personal preference between the TTKZ and MOABOLO, then personal preference between NMFBM, Boom Parang, 1311, and B11, Then I am kind feeling like the 3 rd group (which by no means are slouches, just simply edged out) would be the NMFSH, Battle Saw, 1111, ASH-2 and so on...

I think it would be safe to say from user reviews that the battle saw in my opinion prior to use would fall towards the bottom of group two or top of group three, HOWEVER, after seeing the notching, makes it a force to be reckoned with if you really ever need to build a shelter. I think it would be great at chopping but after extended use, may quickly become tiring vs others like the 1311, Boom Parang. It seems like the Battle saw would be a much better user with a FSH type handle, but would that affect its mechanics in the saw format? Just a thought, maybe an upgrade for the future :)

Not sure about the top three through all-day endurance. Seems like a lot of weight to use all day. I really have zero working experience with them so this is pure speculation.

It is subjective. I would shuffle your categories. Nothing wrong with research, but nothing beats actually using them to find what works best for you. Don't be afraid to catch and release.

Thx, I reprofiled my Parang to 15° per side on my HF 1x30" belt sander with a 120 grit ceramic belt. I always wet my belts down evenly with an old paint brush dipped in water and also have a gravity drip system in place for a continuous supply of coolant. Maybe overkill, but I don't want to do damage the heat treat and the no dust factor is a huge side benefit.

I used it for an extended time yesterday for the first time since I reprofiled and the penetration is great. Really impressed with it, fun blade to use.

I am anxious to try my Boom Parang and Battle saw, along with the 1311 when I get it in. I was originally not going to try them but I just don't think I can do it now... Lol I must use!!! There are so many favors to choose from its very very hard to pick.

All I have to sharpen or re-profile with right now is a KME, or stones by hand. I can sharpen just fine free hand but I get OCD about things some time and knowing blade geometry is one of them. I have been thinking about the WE gen 3....

Who flat out prefers convex edges on choppers or any other blade and why? What advantage does it have if a 15 dps V grind bites deep and doesn't roll or chip?

I don't know that it's really "the king" considering blades like the MOAB, MOABOLO, etc... are out there, but it does seem to be especially well loved as a user around here. Mine certainly isn't going anywhere.

Between the 1111 and 1311, I've really gotta keep both.
