I have a large regular Sebenza pre 1997 with BG-42 steel.
Is has been well used but blade still in very good shape. I sent it to Chris Reeve for sharpening and custom swedge. When they sent the knife back to me it was great but they took off old thumb stud to put on the swedge and when they installed new thumb stud they cracked the blade around thumb stud. They sent it back to me that way.

They have offered to switch the blade with a new S30V.

I may be wrong but the knife even though it it was well used will be worth much less than before with blade swap.

A dealer told me that I should get a new knife since they damaged it.

I was hoping to sell it after the spa treatment.

This thread is not intended to down Chris Reeve knives at all. We all make mistakes. Just wanted mainly value difference if any.

What's your opinion please?

They messed up. You made them aware of it. They offered to replace the blade with a good steel. They offered you a reasonable solution. Whats the issue here ?

I don't see the problem here....

They are going to fix it....

If the knife is a user, then what does it matter how much it would be worth monetarily?
I'd just take the new blade.

I sent it in for spa treatment then I was going to sell it. The question is will it still be worth the same with S30V swap or has the value gone down?

If the knife was worth more with the old blade you should have left it alone. Have you asked if they would be willing to replace the whole knife?

from reading your posts.
I think they offered you a replacement blade. I would consider the S30V a upgrade steel, but I'm no expert on blade steels.
The value of a user/used knife is only what another person is willing to pay. IMHO

I think that's what he's hinting at, that he wants a brand spanking new knife.

I think CRK is already doing the right thing by replacing the blade with better steel. The OP already said it was a "well used" knife.

Yup I'll take S30V or 35VN over BG42 - but I'd still ask for free spa or something to reimburse double shipping and your headache and lost time. A lot of folks don't seem to feel the pain when somebody else gets hit on the thumb by a hammer. Negotiate with Chris and try and get a fair deal. He's a tough negotiater though - he usually uses that old drug campaign slogan "just say no!" CRK problems have been increasing or at least it seems like it.

Bummer for you and CRK - good luck.

I'm not hinting at anything CWL. That is just what a dealer said.
Just wanted opinions on value more than anything because it is going to be sold regardless.

I'd check old sales on the forum and the bay for prices of knives like your BG42 blade. Find out if they are actually selling for a higher amount than the S30V blades.

It would be more valuable to me. Check that statement. It would be more desirable but I'm not sure if it would actually be more valuable. With some people the older BG42 models do seem to be more desirable. I'm one that likes it better and would pay a slightly higher price. I've seen enough advertised with this as a selling point. It's difficult for me to say they were grabbed up quicker as pretty much all models go fast.

As far as Chris Reeve, He is probably doing all he can. I doubt he has any BG42 stock left after this long. Replacement with the currently used steel is probably all you can realistically ask for. That would/should be considered a equitable solution and I don't see any manufacturers doing it differently. I doubt they would recognize a higher value for the older BG42 knives as the S30V was sold as an upgrade. To me it isn't, but that means less than nothing.

Good luck.

Joe

Maybe I'm not understanding correctly, but what is it exactly that you want??? What do you expect Chris Reeve to do go back in time and make you another BG-42 blade?

Be glad you were offered a brand new blade whith an upgraded steel, you can't ask for more than that IMO.

For everyone's clarity, when I sent my small 1997 regular in for spa + double-lugging, I was advised twice that there was some risk of the blade cracking and asked whether I really wanted to do this. I said yes and all came out fine, but this has been reported off and on for years here at BF and elsewhere. I was also advised that if it did crack, there have not been any BG-42 replacement blades in stock for years so a replacement would be S30V. I don't think there's anything else CRK, or anyone else, could reasonably do under the circumstances.

I think as the sales of these knives just continues to grow we will see more and more of issues of this type rearing their head. You are right about him being a tough negotiater. He has offered to most what is a fair resolution. But since the owner was looking to sell for the profit side of the more rare steel variant it throws the normal fix a monkey wrench. Never send non replaceable collectors items in for work that could damage them. I deal in rare and out of print first edition books. I would never rebind a signed Mark Twain. Same point is to never have presswork done on rare piece of steel. If you do role the dice then you take the chane of snake eyes.
The blade replace is.fair. Anything above is Reeve being charitable. P.

Thanks for all the comments that actually pertain to questions.
At this point I have agreed with them for blade replacement but have asked for refund on spa treatment of older BG42 steel blade.

bunnywunny1 asked what I wanted. Just read the post please. {Value Value Value}

+1 for the mastiff. I doubt that you'll get more than what has already been offered. As long as you get the s30v blade with the swedge I think you're square. I know it sucks when you send something out and it doesn't come back the way you expected but put yourself in their shoes
What would you realistically do to make this right?
