packing tape , not masking tape .

I just used one of those boxes the other day to mail off a knife.
I don't trust them...
Just putting them together the sides kept blowing out exactly like the pics above.
So I asked the lady for packaging tape and taped the snot out of it.
The boxes are designed like crap.

I pretty much put enough tape around a box to make it almost waterproof. A good amount of tape will at least deter a lazy thief. Mike

Sorry to tell you , Ben, but you didn't pack that right. If you don't run a strap of reinforced tape around the box from end to end, the ends will pop open. This is especially true if the object in the box makes it bulge a bit. I run a strip around the perimeter and another from end to end across the middle of the box.

You can try and place a claim, but it is a lot of paperwork and may come to no gain. Just replace the scales and chalk it up to experience. Get a six-pack of 3/4" reinforced tape, too.

I agree with all of that.

When I package, I use clear packing tape.
It's cheap, a dollar a roll at the dollar store for fidty yards of tape
It's crappy tape, but you are going to use it like it's free

Let's assume you can get four boxes per roll

10 yards of tape is a lot of tape.
Think of the $0.25 worth of tape like insurance that is actually useful

I type up minimum of three address labels in HUGE font on three different sides.so the postman can read it without his glasses = also my writing stinks.
Plus it prevents the scam of slapping on fake labels and redirection packages.

I tape externally outside in all three directions, one piece round and round and round to waterproof the labels and keep the box secure.

You have to pack the insides under compression
so the contents cannot move and it cannot be crushed by anything else.

If the contents can move, they will beat themselves out like a battering ram.

Those boxes are flat rate, don't be afraid to stuff them full of stuff you can't hit the weight limit with packing.
Crumpled up newspaper is free. Use it like it's free
Create a taped up bundle of contents and packing that's so large it cannot come out of a hole in the box.

It takes me a week to ship something because I Glue up the box and glue that box within within a box and need the glue to dry before taping it up.

This video isn't as concise as it could be, but it's got good points.

The box weighs an ounce, so I doubt there was anything in it. Black palm is fairly heavy. Doubly embarrassing for Ben.

I know Ben will learn from this, and it will make him a better businessman.

And Mike, I know you probably werent trying to scam me, but it is still something I had to consider.

I dont have any finals on wensday, so that should be when the blocks ship out. This time cocooned in tape.

On second thought, going back on my original email to you stating that I wanted another two sets of scales and a pound of scrap, I would just like my $89 refunded. I've sent an email to that affect too.

No offense intended so take it for what it's worth......but if you call me out as a customer in a public forum such as this.......I would not be a return customer......this is a bad business decision.

I dunno- every time I ship one of those FR boxes I have a momentary thought- did I remember to put everything in?
It's so easy to have a lapse of concentration...I have to be very systematic about it and do each one the same way, follow my routine.
Learned my lesson a while back, that cheap tape isn't cheap, too.

Pssssh....

I ship flat rate boxes all the time and never weigh them and it just have to weigh under 4lbs.

The 1oz is default number.

Mike, I issued the refund just now. Im sorry about this mess, and I hope we can do business together in the future.

Deleted address info

But I think anyone who has mailed many flat rate boxes will tell you, they say 1oz.

The issue is resolved. I refunded the buyer the full amount, and i just ordered several rolls of clear cellophane tape as well as some strapping tape. From now on, im going to make people WORK to get the wood out of their shipping boxes ;)

It sucks but it is something many of us have learned due to boxes getting crushed.

As for the 1oz weight those who are jumping all over that have learned something as well today ;)

You might not want to put those guys name and address up on a public website. I would be pissed.

I agree - not cool. A business should never air their laundry in public - it leads to mistakes like this. I wouldn't buy from the OP after reading this thread.

I have a similar business. USPS paid my claim on a very similar incident.

OP, if you're looking for business advice, call SCORE, not ask on the forum you sell on.

This is why I use plenty of tape (preferably Gorilla Tape) when shipping out packages. People on here can probably tell you from experience that getting into the thing can/does take a bit of effort on the recipient's part. From the looks of things, the box was not packed correctly and it's contents fell out someplace between you and your customer.

Bladeforums needs a sticky for business 101 ....... no joke.....the business acumen of some forum members truly baffles me......Ben you think $70 is alot......wait to see what this thread ,which will exist forever, costs you.....I would stop the bleeding if I were you.
