Back when I made custom bullet molds I had 3 molds go missing in shipping. Box arrived empty but sealed. Customer did not open it and sent pictures. Apon inspection the box was cut open and re taped closed. I made replacment molds and customer was happy. I know we always question weather the box arived empty or not. But allways best to make it right. In my situation the 3 molds showed up on eBay a few months later. Each mold was custom made and have unique engraved numbers on it. What sucks is I could prove it was stolen and it happened while in the post office custody and I could not do anything about. eBay would not talk to me about it as I had no police report. In the end I gave up and moved on with life. But yeah rule number one, no info on the box besides your name and address. Also lots of tape, I also snap a pic of each box befor shipping. I feal for you bud, it sucks.

I understand this is a bit of an issue. But I would like to make it clear I did make this right, and I did it as soon as I possibly could.

As soon as it was brought to my attention, i offered replacement wood or a refund. At first I was asked for new blocks, but the buyer then changed their mind to a refund. And I sent the refund as soon as the buyer asked for it.

Yes, i do realize im tripping over my own feet over here, but in terms of business practice I again want to make it clear that you are either happy, or you have your money. In this case, I gave a full refund to the buyer!

hey Ben, lots of responses and I haven't read them,
so I'm just going to give you my personal opinion.
You are a young guy so it may be hard for you to digest and accept what I'm going to say.

Let it go, give him what he wants and move on with your life
Make it right, whatever the cost.
Refund his money or send him ore wood and let it be.

This will pass and it will be a small thing in your life.

regards

I understand, and I did refund it. Before I even started this thread I had offered a full refund or replacement, and have already refunded the entire purchase!

The point of this thread was never to ask whether or not I was going to refund the buyer. If anyone buys wood from me and they are not happy with it, or never received it I will refund the purchase! The reason I started this thread was to find out if blocks coming out of a box is a common thing, and if there was any UPSP claim I could make.

That!
Some things happen whether we like it or not.... about ten years ago I was sent by mail package valuable around 8,000 euros .Recipient of package claimed that the consignment is arrived empty .After few years , I found out that he had fallen in jail for similar things with other clients .But I lost money... life goes on :(

I have a knife associate in friend in Belgium, never met him,
We have done a dozen deals back when I used to buy/sell/collect high end custom folders.
He has even purchased my entire collection at one time.
We have exchanged more than $10,000 in knives.

We did final deal when I sent him a Terzuola Century Starfighter and he was going to send back a Terzuola MK-1 and $200
I got the $200, I never rec'd the MK-1, In July it will be 2 years
No communication with him, no response
I'm out about $1,200, it bothers me at times, I really liked the knife.
But it means so little, It's just not going to change my life.

You insinuated he might be committing fraud and posted his personal information online. It might take more than a refund to make this customer happy.

I never posted his information. That was not his. It was the shipping label to a well known member of the forum who has posted his address in many places from several months back. It was not his.

I didn't mean to accuse him of fraud. In the moment, I didnt know if this was a common thing or an abnormality.

Mike, I am sorry if you felt attacked. I've only been selling wood online for a few months, and still have a lot to learn. If there is something else I can do for you, you have my email.

I think everybody learned a lesson. I learned one too, USE LOTS OF TAPE! Haha. But seriously, let's all cut Ben some slack. People make mistakes. He is a young guy trying to get through school. He is an honorable guy. He sells a good product and tries to do the right thing. Hands up if you have never made a mistake, in business or in some other way. Ben is learning and will be a better and more savvy business person moving forward. But let's not be too quick to start making statements like "I'll never do business with him again". Yes, business is business but we are kind of a family here and we should do more coaching and less scolding.

People need to calm the hell down.

The only person out of anything is Greenburg wood. He just learned a lesson on packaging.

People were accusing him of not even sending the wood, which of course he did.

Everyday we see scams, this was not one of them and fingers where pointed in both directions and everybody was wrong to do so.

Mistakes happen, relax.

In addition to using tape on the outside, it is also good to bundle the goods (with newsprint and shrink-wrap, for example) so that the bundle can't slip out of a compromised box. Stick a business card on the outside of that bundle, and you've got backup protection in case the box gets torn open at a sorting station.

Ben promptly offer me a refund, or more wood within a few minutes of me contacting him with the problem. I chose more wood, then later changed my mind and asked for a refund which he provided quickly.

Ben made this right.

Thank you Ben.

Im not sure how much USPS charges for insurance but I just sent 2 knives FedEx today and got 300 dollars of insurance for 2.50. Its worth it just in case.

We run into an issue about 1% of the time, which works out to two or three times a year. A crooked buyer, a thief in the shipping system, incompetency and sometimes just bad luck. You just refund or replace and don't let it bug you. Yeah, it sucks, but it's also pretty rare. 1%. Who cares. Paypal fees are way more than that. It's just the cost of doing business.

...wait

oh my god, seriously?

...dude, try harder...

If I'm not mistaken, Priority Mail automagically comes with $50 worth of insurance at no extra charge, so if anything, I'd still file a claim if I were OP.

Found this from 2014:

Coverage Value 2014 Price % Change
$50.01-100.00 $2.60 +6.1%
$100.01-200.00 $3.30 +8.2%
$200.01-300.00 $5.50 +7.8%
Per each additional $100 $1.25 +8.7%

Although tape is the cheapest form of insurance, this is still not a bad deal to CYA in the event of a mishap.

I can see why you wouldn't want to enter the correct box weight on a flat rate box but poorly using masking take to ship something is beyond foolish, LOL

This issue has been reconciled by both parties with a satisfactory responce and plenty advise to learn from. This thread should die. Further insight only adds injury and remorse.

Both parties Parted with a mutual satisfactory result, this business transaction is over and should not be made into a soap opra.
