Fug, the lid really only works on the pot. Here is another option.

Stove (it folds completely flat)

Pot/Cup (don't boil water with the lid on)

I believe all Klean Kanteen stainless bottles have uncoated interiors (very important), but you could give them a quick call to verify. A lot of W&SS people boil water in their Guyots or Klean Kanteens.

You can also bring 2 pieces of tin foil to make a pot lid and wind screen.

It's a Super Cat Stove. Costs less than a buck to make.

All you'd ever want to know about the SC stove here: http://jwbasecamp.com/Articles/SuperCat/index.html

Mine has what's called a "Second Generation" stand: http://jwbasecamp.com/Articles/SuperCat/Stand2/index.html

I do need to make a wind break for it. Filled with denatured alcohol, it burns about ten minutes and will boil water in about five.

I have a couple of other backpack stoves. I have a Brasslite, which is another alcohol stove. When I overnight, I general carry an MSR Pocket Rocket along with my MSR Titan Kettle. REI had an MSR combo deal a while back, and I couldn't resist this set-up.

There is some discussion of stoves in this recent WS&S thread where I posted the same hiking pics: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=705338

Some pics from initial Super Cat test...

Thanks Guyon
Lots of info in there I have to dissect
I am kinda wondering if that esbit fuel tab stove
might be the easiest for me in this situation.

The supercat stove,in the last pic it shows the flames coming out of the sides
of that can. If I have a small "ti mug" type pot on top of it,
would its diameter be too small for the flames to heat the water?
(your pot looks much larger than a mugs diameter)

Wish they made a stove/ti mug combo to boil 16 oz of water.

Greatest tv show last night
Life After Armageddon on History Channel

If you get a chance to check it out, do yourself the favor, easily the BEST I have seen. Not some hokey shit, but I think everyone here could easily have taken a few pointers from it, everything from communications, BOBs, firearms, nutrition..........very well put together!

Keep in mind it was made for the "general" audience......not the super hard SHTF already preped types that already have stockpiles and fortifications in place.

fug, I'll get dimensions on that pot (it is definitely wider than a mug), but you might be right that a small mug might just have flames shooting up the sides. However, you might read this section of the article. A mug might work better than we think:

THE QUESTION OF POT WIDTH

One interesting thing I've learned from my development experiences is that the conventional wisdom about side-burner stoves and pot width is not necessarily correct. Many hikers believe that alcohol stoves like the Super Cat only work well with wide-bottom pots under the theory that narrow pots allow too much of the stove's heat to flow up the sides of the vessel, thereby significantly reducing efficiency. In truth, it's not that simple.

Somewhat to my amazement, the fastest boil times I've ever observed with the Super Cat have been with tall, narrow cook pots. More specifically, I'm referring to those that are constructed from 24 or 25 ounce aluminum beer cans sold by Heineken, Fosters and others.

To go to a smaller can for the stove might not work. Here's why:

it turns out that the 3 ounce aluminum can that's recommended for Super Cat use is just about perfect for this task.

The volume is such that the alcohol vapors pressurize properly under almost all altitude, temperature and other operating conditions. It's also large enough that, depending on hole configuration, it will hold up to 2 fluid ounces of fuel, which is usually more than enough for most cooking chores. Likewise, the can's diameter easily supports most commonly used pot sizes while maintaining a high degree of efficiency.

The aluminum walls are likewise thin enough to efficiently conduct heat to the alcohol pool to keep it boiling, but are also thick enough to safely support the weight of a full pot of water (at least of the size range most likely to be used).

Over the years, I've experimented a variety of other cans types that have been larger, smaller, and constructed from metals such as steel and brass, and I have yet to find anything that works as well as the 3 ounce aluminum can.
