Coffee can fix a lot of things, but not everything.... v. New Peanut Content!!!

Sounds like some great ideas. Would love to see what happens when you give it a try.

Yep, as Robin said, leather dye works pretty good. I have tried the coffee method too and have had pretty good results as well. Tried the coffee method on my purple elephant toe, the pile side looked like an easter egg. Got a darker hue on the edges that I was wanting but still not as dark as the mark side. I need to try again to see if i can get them a tad darker. Maybe I'll try some tea this time.

My Case Canoe looked like that and I tried to dye it and now I have a Canary Canoe ~~ real ""Yellow"" ~~ going to shoot it at sun-up.!** lol
Good luck with whatever you do.

Wolf Man - LOL, I don't know what is funnier, your picture or your reply!! Thanks for a gut splitting laugh! :D:D:D:thumbup:

I've done the tea coffee simmer thing and been very happy with the results. My STJ CV Amber bone turned out awesome. But I did notice a little gap in the back spring that wasn't there before the dye job. Must have been the temp.

Next time I'm going to try it in cool tea coffee.

Wanted to mention. Bone, like horn can be bent and molded by soaking it in hot water. Bone is porous, so if you have soaked bone in water, cold or hot, I would suggest oiling the bone with a natural oil like coconut oil. You may find your scales lifting and warping otherwise. Just sayin.

Best regards

Robin

Mineral oil?

I use coconut oil on my bone, mineral on the steel. I ued to use mineral oil but Bernard Levine mentioned that it was not good to use on bone. You Never want to argue with Bernard :D I just started using coconut oil, its amazing on ebony but darkens it quite a bit. Here are before and after pics. A tiny drop made this difference.

Best regards

Robin

Will these dye jobs wear out?

There is some wear with Fiebings. It really depends on the bone. Case knives seem to have a finish, likely buffing and polishing compound. A good steel wooling or 400 to 600 sand paper helps break the surface.

Regards

Robin

...
I didn't bother with the other knife. The pile side looks like someone wiped peanut butter on it. I'm trying to decide what to do with it. I really like the pattern. I could send it back to Case, wait, and maybe still not end up with a great knife..... plus the CV steel is only available in Amberbone and short of Arizonaranchman's 6375 (which is outstanding), I'm not big on Case's Amberbone. Maybe I can get it rehandled in something I'll really dig..... maybe some red corn cob? Maybe some ebony? Maybe some peachseed? Dunno yet. I will let Case know either way.

Mark side looks alright:

Flip it over and:

Oh, well. Anyone got some ideas?

I see why you're disappointed in the handles, but, man, other than that peanut butter pile side, I think that canoe is stunning! I'm really drawn to the canoe pattern, and I'm not sure why; maybe the symmetry? Anyway, I hope you figure out a way fix it up to your satisfaction.

Woodrow, I'm about to turn 45 and I had never drank a cup of coffee until I was about 35. I had just never tried it, but I've made up for lost time. I usually manage 4 cups throughout the day. Another thing, I do all of my knife sharpening on the bottom of a coffee mug.

I've recently become enamoured with it. I'm going to get a few. As far as the fix up, I've got something in the works.... I ordered another in SS, Corn Cob Red Pocket Worn while I wait to get this done. I'm a little excited, but will keep details under wraps until it's done.

I'm in almost the same boat.... maybe a littler earlier than you. I use pocket stones for sharpening... but occasionally use the bottom of a mug!

Woot woot! The fix is in!

Can't wait to see what you've figured out. I've been checking in periodically to see if you've been able to fix this. Judging by your excitement it appears as though you've got something good brewing.

This clearly QC issue is why I only deal with a Case dealer that will hand inspect to my request. I am not all that into Case (present), but for the patterns that I do want, I will only deal with the dealer that has not let me down.

Too bad.....unfortunate...but we just need to figure out the work around.
