Coffee jitters tour in Los Feliz/Silver Lake.

Stop 1: Bru Coffee.
Machine and grinder: La Marzocco, Mazzer Robur
Roaster and bean: Ritual Coffee, Golden Bough.

"The Golden Bough is comprised of three freshly arrived Central American coffees. The primary component comes from Alejandra and Arturo Chacon’s El Angel: La Casa, from the Tarrazú region of Costa Rica. This Villalobos variety coffee is mechanically washed and provides The Golden Bough with a backbone of intense sweetness and a snappy graham cracker finish.
Also from Costa Rica, Osvaldo Gonzalez’s mechanically washed coffee from El Cipres contributes a sparkling, citrus acidity.
Finally, the Hunapú Bourbon from producers on the slopes of the Agua and Acatenango volcanoes in Guatemala delivers a syrupy, stone fruit sweetness.
In concert, these coffees create a beautifully nectar-like espresso, with flavors of apricot, pineapple, plum, and dark honey."

50% El Angel: La Casa —— Tarrazú, Costa Rica
25% El Cipres —— West Valley, Costa Rica
25% Hunapú Bourbon —— Antigua, Guatemala

Taste: Not too bad. Kind of a light neutral balanced flavor. 3rd place.

Stop #2: Caffe Vita. They have the nice glass syphon and wooden brewer rack.
Machine and grinder: Synesso, Mazzer Robur
Beans: Caffe del sol
Roasted: Seattle
"Our signature espresso blend is rich and complex with aromas of dark chocolate, butterscotch and praline. A deep, silky, amber crema with a sweet, caramel finish."

Taste: Slightly brighter and tastier than Bru. 2nd place.

Stop #3: Inteligenstia
Machine and grinder: La Marzocco fb/80, Mazzer Robur
Beans: Black cat espresso
"This syrupy and sweet espresso blend has been the staple of our lineup since the very beginning. It is a product of intensive lot selection and close, direct work with the farmers who produce its components. The Black Cat Classic Espresso’s hallmark is its supreme balance and wonderful sweetness."

Taste: Watered down and then turns immediately into bitters. Last place.

Stop #4: Lamill Coffee
Machine and grinder: La Marzocco automatic, Mazzer Robur
Beans: Bliss espresso
Origin: Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Bolivia
"Bliss reminds us of a candy bar-- undeniably caramel, chocolate and nutty. Intense sweetness and complexity, thick viscosity and an incredibly long, sweet finish with a touch of orange peel and brandy."

Taste: Great, lots of flavor and yet still balanced. Double shot looked like a single. 1st place.

Lamill also has 2 Clover machines and the new 4 spout Steampunk. Had to try at least one. So I tried the cool looking Steampunk coffee machine.
Taste: Well balanced, light, smooth, hints of flavors popping, no acidity or bitters. I don't drink brewed coffee that much anymore because its too light but it probably was the best brewed coffee I have tried so far.

Lol this is crazy yet awesome at the same time. How many high end coffee shops are there in LA?

LOL. I am following the advise of forums, bloggers, and newspapers as the best in LA. Specialty coffees have been filtering into LA for a few years now and are getting huge. Blue bottle just replaced Handsome roasters and Verve coffee will be opening up in 3 places. Lots of Hollywood people keeping these places busy.
I still have to go to Venice/Santa Monica, Glendale, Pasadena, and Valencia, which are also supposedly among the best.

All of this fun has improved my palate and I am starting to identify, sour, bitter, and more tasting notes. So far the best made and brightest was Handsome roaster's dapper and my favorite tasting was Stumptown's espresso blend.

I thought I'd post a knife pic.....
Also, I need one of you Jersey boys to get me some more Small World Black and Tan!!!!!!

How many of us coffee nuts live vicariously through P.E. and Cchu?? :D

Exactly.
My small town is very limited for independent shops and I refuse to go to that big bucks chain. I can do a better job with my cheapo equipment at home.
One of these days I'll make the trip to visit family in LA. By that time PE should have all the hot spots scouted. ;)

I have read the grinder makes the coffee the espresso machine just adds pressurized hot water.

Stop on by and I will make you a drink and take you on the best jitters tour.

I don't make it into to U City very often, however, I have planned a jitters tour after the kids go back to school and 2 of those 3 are on my list. Sump is close to my work- I will be sure to hit that Saturday morning. I didn't know it was there!!!!

I'm going down to punta gorda/Naples this weekend. A friend of mine is one of the largest exotic reptile breeders on the East coast specializing in large lizards like Cuban Rock Iguanas. Should be fun. If anyone has some coffee/breakfast suggestions down there feel free to ping me!

I had only planned to stop at 4 or 5 places but ended up going to 10! Found out my health rapidly decreased after 5 shots and paid the price for this much fun.

Culver city jitter tour.

Paper or Plastik.
Machine, grinder, Barista: Synesso, Mazzer robur, Zach.
Beans: Black Oak roasters, Crosstown espresso blend. "Dark Chocolate, Sweet Fruit, Candied Nuts." Doesn't sell the beans to customers only for the store.
Taste: Average and somewhat balanced. 3.5 out of 5.

Conservatory.
Machine, grinder, roaster: La Marzocco auto, Mazzur robur, and Mahlkonig for drip. They roast their own beans frequently.
Beans: Organic espresso blend (their blend). "Very low in acidity, with a mellow full body. Using coffees from South America, India and Indonesia, we roast this blend just shy of a full city roast to assure loads of crema."
Taste: Light with bitter aftertaste. 3 out of 5.

Bar 9.
Machine, grinder, roaster: Modbar system, Mahlknonig EK43, they roast their beans.
Impression: Only 4 months old and they are ahead of the game. I see them as being the model for the future. I talked to one of the head baristas and he has all the variables figured out. "At Bar Nine, we believe in the value of simplicity. One of the ways we showcase this is with our coffee menu, which always features 3 of the finest coffees of the season, plus one excellent decaf."
Beans: EL RETIRO, MEXICO,
El Retiro is super sweet with hints of spice, cocoa, and citrus which makes this a complex and very exciting coffee. As an espresso, El Retiro comes to life. Complex and nuanced on its own while remaining anchored and delicious in milk. Bourbon, Caturra, Cataui and Typica grown in Chiapas at 1500-1700m make up El Retiro."
Taste: I was told they intentionally run the shot a little longer and that is how it tasted. My taste might have cut the shot a little earlier. 3.5 out of 5.

Cognoscenti.
Machine and grinder: La Marzocco, Mahlkonig, Mazzer robur.
Beans: Ritual espresso, Golden bough.
Taste: Light, 3 out of 5.

Dues Ex Machina. Also sells vintage motorcycle clothing and surfing gear. Barista used a shot timer and threw away the 1st bad shot.:)
Machine and grinder: La Marzocco, Mazzer Robur.
Beans: Handsome roasters, Dapper.
Taste: Medium 3.5 out of 5.

Intelligentsia. This place wants to be the next *$$. With their low quality and impatient baristas it appears they will.:grumpy:
Machine and grinder: La Marzocco, Mazzer Robur.
Beans: Black cat espresso.
Taste: Weak and bitter but better than silverlake's store. 2.5 out of 5.

Toms Roasters. Impulse stop because it was across the street from Intell. and it said roasters. Found out they roast once a month, didn't put roasting date on bag, and the barista didn't know when the next roasting day was.:grumpy:
Machine and grinder: La Marzocco, Mahlkonig.
Beans: Carpe diem.
Taste: Unbalanced, acidic turns into quickly bitters. No crema and cracks in the cup. 2 out of 5.

This place has strange hours. It opened at 9am (I was already at work) and closed at 4pm (I am still at work) I didn't get to go and with those kind of hours I doubt I ever will.

I get "standard" coffee service through my business, I drink on the order of 8 cups of coffee a day, usually in the first 3 hours of the morning. I love coffee and love standard, not sure of the blend but its good and strong, I think sonic may use the same company.

does anyone have any suggestions for a total coffee addict? I have never gotten an actual bag of coffee, so what would I buy if I like really strong , bitter coffee?

great thread and great pictures guys.

If you like strong "regular" coffee.....

We Are the World's Strongest Coffee! Some have called us irresponsible for making this product, we think it's revolutionary.

Death Wish is just a couple of miles away from me apparently. I can't find an address for a store front though. Mail order only?
