I had to buy some pre surgery coffee. Mama doesn't work the grinder or the pot, so I had to make it easy on her! LOL! Peet's is slowly gaining a top 3 spot on my grocery store coffee list.
The fixed blade is a Garrison (one of BF's finest makers). The folder is my "best buy" knife Enlan EL01A.

Peet's MD was my old go to blend when I read Lance Armstrong drank that to get him going.

Jitter Tour of DownTown LA!

G&B Coffee. #1 specialty cafe of LA.
Brewer & Grinder: La Marzocco Linea, Mazzer Robur.
Beans: 49th Parallel, Epic Espresso. "Epic Espresso is the culmination of our search for the sweetest and most complex espresso we can create. If you're looking for an incredibly sweet, clean espresso with floral notes and bright acidity, this is definitely for you."
Country: Ethiopia.
Process: Washed.
Region: Yirgacheffe, Dumerso.
Cultivar: Local Heirloom varieties.
Elevation: 1800-2000 m.a.s.l.
Taste: Good balance of caramels and sweetness. Last drop had a fruity finish. 4.0 stars.

Palate Refresher: Most specialty cafes serve you a signature flavored sparkling mineral water.


Verve Coffee. Had a small soft opening and then closed down but I was lucky that they were hosting a special event.
Brewer & Grinder: La Marzocco FB80, Mahlkonig K30.
Farms: Fazenda Aurea, Las Cruces, Nigusse Lemma.
Region: Minas Gerais, Santa Ana, Limu.
Processing: Various.
Cultivar: Catuai, Bourbon, Heirloom.
Elevation: Various.
Notes: Fresh Blueberries, Dark Chocolate, Balanced.
Taste: Nicely balanced chocolate and sweetness. 3.5.


Demitasse. Another place that weights and examines their drinks before serving.
Brewer & Grinder: La Marzocco GB5, Mahlkonig K30.
Beans: Demitasse, Foundation Espresso. 50% Guatemala Prenda Linda, 25% Tanzania Kiboko and 25% Ethiopia Lomi Tasha.
Notes: Blackberries, graham cracker, blood orange and anise.
Taste: Good balance of bitter and acidic. Slightly muddled, I couldn't distinguish between the tasting notes. 3.3.


Cafe Dulce. They weight, cup, and taste to make sure your drink is done right!
Brewer & Grinder: Slayer 3 group Auto Volumetric, Compak K10
Beans: Four Barrel, Guatemalan Retina.
Location: Valle de Panchoy, Antigua.
Elevation: 1,550 meters.
Cultivar: Yellow Bourbon & Red Bourbon.
Notes: Tropical Florality, Big Flavor, Guava Mellow, Fresh Cream, Sparkling Syrup, Sweet Apple.
Taste: Medium acidity that had consistency from start to finish. 3.5.


Blue Bottle. Recently opened and bought out Handsome roasters. Sells beans in 8 oz. bags.:confused:
Brewer & Grinder: La Marzocco FB80, Mazzer Robur.
Beans: Handsome's Dapper Espresso Blend.
Taste: Smooth acidity which turns to bitters at the last drop. 3.0.


Stumptown Coffee Roasters.
Brewer & Grinder: (Best looking espresso machine in LA) Custom La Marzocco Strada, Mazzer Robur.
Beans: House blend. "Latin American and East African coffees. The blend's components rotate seasonally in order to capture their peak flavor. Floral and nutty in fragrance, House Blend exudes perfect balance and an inviting sweetness that pair to create the quintessential coffee experience."
Taste: Classic Italian espresso taste with high sweetness in the last drop. 3.5.

Brewer and Grinder: La Marzocco linea, Mazzer Rober.
Beans: Sightglass. Columbian El Meridano, Tolima.
Location: Herrera, Tolima.
Altitude: 1500–1900 masl.
Cultivar: Caturra & Typica.
Process: Washed and then sun dried.
Notes: "This is a sweet and balanced cup with notes of apple and fresh cherries balanced by flavors of red grape and ripe plum."
Taste: Slightly bitter, acidic top notes. 3.2.

So, how do you like your LIDO2 so far? I have cranked the thing at least 2500 times and the handle is just beginning to loosen up. I thought about putting a handle from a
fishing reel on it, but I don't have a fishing reel and it seems silly to buy a reel just to steal the handle. I looked for handles on eBay and they cost as much as a used reel.

Orphan Espresso just launched their new prototype Plastic catch jar for their Lido 2! The original equipment glass jar weights 199 grams, this weights 109 grams, same size as original glass jar, tinted slick plastic body, and has no static cling. No release date yet.
 
Blade and Brew of the day! What is yours?

Kirby Lambert and Demitasse, Burundi Kayanza.
Region: Burundi, Kayanza
Varietals: Bourbon, Jackson and Miribzi.
Processed: Segec, Washing Station. Double fermentation. The cherry is first pulped, soaked in water, then washed and soaked again, resulting in an insanely clean and smooth cup.
Notes: Plums, persimmons and grapes.
Taste: Nice acidic flavor that isn't in your face when made correctly.
 
Good old Cafe Bustelo prepared in a 4 cup Moka pot. Just about as bitter as I am. :grumpy:

Thanks Ben. If only it would photograph well. For some reason the sunspot kirinite looks so much better in hand than in pictures.
Oh well, just means I'll probably never sell it due to its poor photogenics. Maybe I should start carrying it.

Thanks! Have you tried natural lighting? I used the information from the BFC thread about photography boxes and built my own from PVC and HF lights.
 
$395 just to make a cup of Joe. I have read that the Technivorm Moccamaster may be the best, but I doubt that I could tell the difference between a $300 coffee maker or a $10 Walmart special. :D

Right now I am using a Tiamo KO1 pour over thingy. It works about as good as anything else I tried.

RE: Todd Carmichael. I found Dangerous Grounds to be an interesting show. I even recorded a few episodes. There are some folks who are upset with him. They feel that he has been insulting to some of the countries. They claim that he puts them in a bad light. Well duh. The areas that he went to in Columbia, Mexico, Borneo and PNG are not exactly your average tourist destinations. He did kind of turn me off to Ethiopian. He said that their coffee in strictly controlled by the government and much of it sits in warehouses rotting. True? I don't know.

Yeah, I think you have to be a big Carmichael/La Columbe Syphon fan to pay that much.:confused: Some have speculated the price will eventually drop in the future for the standard model. People have also speculated that it will be difficult to clean and that the water jacket, slurry agitator feature, might just be a sales gimmick.

I have watched all the episodes and I am anxiously waiting for the next season. The show has opened my eyes to the wild west of coffee growing and it helped me realize that fair trade was more than just giving the farmer a fair market value. I am not for sure about the Ethiopian cooperatives but I found that information very eye opening.:eek:

Tiamo KO1 looks like a cool toy! Any more information, comparisons, or pics? A lot of the baristas I have talked to use a pour over for their drip.

Orphan Espresso sells them. They have the best prices that I have been able to find.

The only problem is that it's hard to make more than 12oz. at a time. I think that I should have bought the V02 instead. I might buy one just for the halibut. ;)

That JH Lloyd reminded me a bit of a DW Childress liner lock I picked up here last year. Had to post it up.
Do yourselves a favor and pick up a box of Keebler cinnamon grahams and Hershey's chocolate almond spread. Or if you have issues with your waistline do yourself a favor and don't. ;) It's so good with my semi-bitter little espresso blend.
