I was about to throw the box away when I finally discovered this beauty. The Spyderco Des Horn folder is a fantastic, beautiful, slim, and lightweight EDC with premium S30V steel.

Spyderco website: Spyderco Des Horn,

The art of knifemaking has no geographic boundaries. Makers practice their craft on every continent and in every country on the planet. In Cape Town, South Africa, there is Des Horn.

Des, a practicing dentist, gained international acclaim as a knifemaker in the 1960s when his knives started selling in and out of Africa. His desire to make knives was first piqued after having communicated with knifemaking great Bo Randall of Randall Knives. While his early efforts were primarily fixed-blades, he later moved to making folding knives. A member of both the South African and Italian Knifemaker's Guilds his debut collaboration with Spyderco is the Des Horn Folder.

The Des Horn Folder is best described in a single word, sleek. The blade intertwines elements of both a Spear-Point and a Wharncliffe shape and tapers to a super-fine, flat-ground, PlainEdged tip. The blade is CPM S30V high-carbon and therefore highly edge-retentive, powdered steel manufactured by Crucible Inc. Corrugated furrows machined above the hole into the blade's steel artistically continue through to adjoining black G-10 handle adding a grip-able texture through stylish graphics.

The handle tapers in a mirror image of the blade. Narrowing to a tip at the handle's back end the folder takes on a spike-like profile with a horizontal straight on the bottom of the knife running from the tip of the blade to the end of the handle. Inside is a Michael Walker Liner Lock, while outside the G-10 scales come assembled with an adjustable pivot and scale screws. A deep-pocket wire clip positions the folder for tip-down, right-hand carry.

The folder combines Des Horn's signature look with Spyderco features and manufacturing quality.

I received 2 boxes- 1 from Ebay and one from my secret Santa directly. The first was a huge flat box that had some weight to it. As you know it was the Tramontina 2 handed sugar cane machete. The next day box #2 arrived from NJ. 3 of the 4 remaining players in this exchange are from NY or NJ...so.......It wasn't P.E. (he's on the left side).:D

The Chu Chu holiday train rolled across the mid west and Santa had a brand new bag!!! I must be on the "nice" list.

Tramontina 2 handed Sugar Cain Machete 13" (24" OL)of spring steel fun!!!!

Next out of the box was a tripple dose of holiday cheer! Honey/Ginger drink --- Green tea--and my personal favorite, ground chili paste. Which will accompany my eggs this morning!!!!

No way!.... not a Fenix flashlight! E05 in blue! That's 85 lumens from a single AAA battery!

HolidaySanta004.jpg

Now the Pièce de résistance--Gregory's Coffee--Night Vision blend! Santa is real!

NIGHT VISION ESPRESSO 3.0
Good espresso is really sweet. When we realized we had the chance to develop a new espresso blend, we focused manily on how we could get it to be super sweet and what kinds of sweetnesses we could get in it. We settled on a blend of naturally-processed Brazil Oberon (good natural Brazils tend to lend a lot of body and peanut butter cup sweetness to a coffee) and washed coffee from San Andres, Honduras. That combo allows this version of Night Vision to get some fruity sweetness in with it’s chocolate and nuttiness. Line up a straight espresso or have it in one of our delicious milk drinks.

Wait! there is another item in there.... What is this? A gift for my daughters to fight over! A beautiful gold and Pearl necklace. Very nice my friend. That must have been from Mrs. Secret Santa!!
I couldn't get a good pic of this beauty with the lighting in my cave, but I will later when the sun comes out!

Thank you Chris. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season my friend! I hope all of you have a safe and happy holiday!!

Here is a group shot of Mono's Secret Santa gift.....

Two flashlights in the Secret Santa? Great minds must think alike lol.

So on the 5th day before Christmas my secret Santa Santa (Primitive Energy) gave to me....! A bag of Blue Bottle espresso which is being polished off as we speak and this a.m. I opened up what appears to be a Brewer ex kickstarter project - cold drip coffee press from Bauer. Coincidentally the Company hails from Ben, Primitive Energy's town!

Thanks Ben for the wonderful new brew method to try out. The cold brew method which I've never experienced is supposed to extract the coffee in a manner that allows the bright flavors to pop out while minimizing harsher tasting notes. Can't wait to play with this thing!

That is awesome. I am a huge cold coffee drinker. No ice though. I like it from the fridge with a dab of Italian sweet cream! I bet that will open a whole new door for your coffee purchasing!!

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Hey fellas I almost forgot the back story on the tea! It has toasted barley/rice in it which gives the tea a nice toasted flavor. But more importantly it's part of the ingredients that you would need to make what's called a "yin-yang" coffee in Hong Kong. I've been drinking it for years. Served hot or cold it's a 50/50 beverage of tea and milk coffee. Whenever I do Chinese dim-sum in Chinatown I order it. Being how my wife is lily white from the Berkshires, MA she's pretty much grossed out about 40% of the menu, stiff like snails in chili and black bean sauce, duck feet, tripe and other staples to dim sum don't appeal to her. So I don't go as often as I used to. But here's a recipe for the yin yang I hope you try it out sometime! Can be made with your favorite tea and coffee of course!

Only a small sampling of the 60 or so tapas sized dishes that get served at a Chinese dim sum teahouse for breakfast and brunch

She hates it when I gnaw on the chicken feet and tripe, lmao!

Dang!
Next time I wander down to Jersey I'm looking you up. ;)

Do it! Let me do the driving and we'll eat for about 2.5 hours that's how my family used to do it on Sunday days lol. My favorite are the shrimp in steamed rice flour crepes, deep fried crab claws with stuffed shrimp lollipops, tripe in chili black bean and beef pan fried noodle and coconut jello for dessert!

I opened my secret santa package from Orchunter93!

Wrapped with care and a thoughtful note. It feels like Christmas.

3 bean varieties and a Kershaw Chive 1600. Very much in keeping with our coffee and blade theme here. :)

It's a sweet little blade.
Extremely sharp right out of the box. It's going right into my coin pocket for a non-intimidating carry that I can use at work. My main carry usually frightens my customers so this is a welcome addition to my collection.
I sampled the Sumatra already. Prepped properly in my new Chemex and it is delicious. I've been wanting some Sumatra lately and have been driving past the market but something told me to wait...
I'll give another a try tonight posed with 2 knives I just had re-scaled. Details later.

Thanks Danny. Have a great holiday along with everyone here.

Coffee lover here. After several years of enduring DFAC coffee, I decided to start fresh once I got settled back in Stateside. I left my old coffee brewer and grinders behind in my house, and bought all new here for my new apartment. I started with a

and immediately tossed the paper filters that came with it. Gold basket only, I paid good money for my coffee oils and I want them! I keep my current go-to grind in the hopper. Right now it's a Sumatran bold from a local roaster that's really interesting. I love the grinding and brewing right away after it's done being ground.

I also added a

for when I want to switch up. I just hit the 'No grind' button on the brewer when I add coffee from this. Today I'm drinking some Ethiopian from this and am thinking that it may do a stint as my go-to. :)

I'm also in the market for an espresso maker. Here's the one I want,

but don't want the $600 price tag. So far, no luck catching a sale. Hopefully after Christmas......

I was thinking real hard what to get you. There are many different takes on immersion brewers like a french press but they are just variations on the same theme with similar tastes. All of the cold brew immersion systems are similar in that they will still have that stomach churning acid and can have a distinct funky taste.

The new geeky toy wonder in the coffee world, your Cold Bruer is similar to the Japanese slow drip. 5 hour brew with a drip per second will make a very smooth tasting drink and will bring out more flavors than brewed hot. It will take some experimentation to get the 1 drip per second but I also bought one for myself and I did not have a problem once I set the drip. Cold brewing is also a great way to save money by using stale beans and not your fresh expensive beans and the slow drip can keep you entertained for hours.:D

My first drink I used too much water and it tasted like graham crackers. I have read descriptions that have said it had that profile but it has never came out so prominent like when used with this bruer. It was delicious, light, non stomach churning, more caffeine, and without the funky immersion taste. It doesn't brew quickly but coffee geeks love the details and I think you will like the taste.

Cold Bruer website and recipes. http://www.bruer.co/

WHAT IS COLD BREW?

Cold brew coffee is deliciously smooth and naturally sweet, its less acidic and less bitter than hot brewed coffee, and pairs beautifully with milk.

Brewed over the course of several hours, with cold water. Cold brew methods extract different compounds from the coffee, resulting a completely different flavor.

Made from all high quality materials; Borosilicate Glass, Stainless Steel, and Food grade silicone. Cold Bruer makes up to four cups of delicious velvety Cold brew Coffee. The adjustable valve lets you experiment with brew time between 3-12 hours, with a recommended six hour brew at one drip per second.

Cold Bruer uses slow drip methodology instead of the more common full immersion method resulting in higher flavor clarity, and a much cleaner coffee.

The Cold Bruer works by slowly dripping water through a bed of coffee, where it saturates then collects in the carafe below. Unlike full immersion there is no more attention required after set up, reducing the chances of over-extraction.
