Coffee

Before I took the plunge I wanted too see what this 'cold brew' was all about. I bought this last night at the local market. It is fantastic. I like it so much I am starting some cold brew today! What is the coffee/water ratio???

Haha! This is exactly what the wife and I did! Literally the same exact brand/sweetness. Now I am brewing a couple gallons or more of cold brew at home weekly. I have no advice as far as ratios though, as I just eyeball everything. I do pre-sweeten mine by making a simple liquid sugar by dissolving sugar into almost boiling water. I add the "sugar water" into the cold brew after brewing, but before putting it into the fridge. Good luck!

Depends on how strong you like your coffee and how long you're going to let it steep. I like mine crunchy, so I use a LOT of coffee.

Very coarse ground coffee at a 1:4 ratio with cold water steeped for 18-24 hours is how I make mine.

You can probably get away with a 1:8 ratio, but I wouldn't go any lower than that. Especially if you're serving over ice.

Has anyone roasted your own coffee? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJB0ZyrSbXo A good friend made this video for us. I think she did a heck of a job

I have pan roasted at home, I also professionally roast, for the coffee shop that I manage. Go through probably 100 pounds a week. I can't watch the video currently, I'm in a country that blocks YouTube until Wednesday. Looking forward to checking it out though.

Lol, yeah. ;) Search the thread for "home roast". I've been home roasting for 13 years now. A few other guys that post in this thread do too. I think I started a BF home roasting thread somewhere as well.

Here is one of my most recent sharp and pointy acquisitions. She is a Busse Battle Grade War Train Fusion. (WTF :p)

Your eyes aren't fooling you, she really is that big!!! Blade is 11" long by 3" tall by 0.3" thick. She's a BEAST!!!  Picked up the coffee locally in San Jose just before I headed home. I wish the roast date was a little more recent, but I really liked this blend and wanted to bring some home for my wife to try. It's 75% Guatemalan and 25% Ethiopian. Lovely! :D Here's a Cappa I pulled on Friday morning.

My first cold brew in my French press went well. It was on the weak side, but the flavor was spot on. I used a 4:1 ratio.

I also got this surprise in the mail!!

You give it another try yet, John? My guess is a finer grind, more grounds, or a longer brew time would make it stronger. I don't think a finer grind would be too good in a french press unless you plan on filtering it afterward, though.:D

All this talk of cold brew finally got to me, too. I've been interested in it for a while since first reading about it. Then I ran across this at the local wally world for $13 and figured it was worth a try.

It's super simple to use and I thought the first batch turned out pretty good and plenty strong. The top of the pitcher and the bottom of the brew core unscrew to make it easy to clean.

Batch number two with some mokha java. Fill the core with beans about an inch short of the top of the filter screens. Then use the coarsest setting on the grinder.

This fills it to the top of the screens. Very slowly add cold water until it's level with the top of the grounds. Screw on the lid and stick it in the fridge for 24 hours.

It is really nice for iced coffee or other cold coffee drinks, especially while the weather is still hot. I don't think it will ever replace my #2 and #6 filter cones, but I do like how it turned out. I had a couple other people try some and they both liked it also.

You guys definitely need to cool it with all the home roasting talk. That's something else I've been interested in. Not quite ready to dive into that rabbit hole just yet though........

Coffee from a local Denver roaster. A bit light for my tastes for espresso, but decent overall.
