Cold forging

There is a lot of "confused" information on that link, but with the dominance of cognizant relativism here these days- heck have it:thumbup:. Merely replace ASM and Edgar Bain with Carlos Castaneda and have a far-out, groovy time hammering away at that cold O-1 to your hearts content. :D

I tried with my 303 stainless a few months back when I first found that it could only be cold worked. I hammered the crap out of it. Not only did it not forge well, it started to crack and get really ugly. I find the website dubious at best, ridiculous at worst.

Ah. A subject that used to aggravate Kevin's turrets syndrome now simply congers up imagery of inebriated forging. The new meds are working.

Short answer (without the sarcasm), it is not feasible to cold forge a decent blade that will perform anything like a properly heat treated blade.

Well, he does talk about proper heat treating after cold forging. My thought is if you are going through all that trouble and sweat and then properly heat treat, why not just do stock removal and save the wrist strain.

:confused:Has my past input on this topic been profane enough to offend you into thinking I need behavior altering drugs Nathan? I can assure you that I for one I have never had the need for mind altering drugs, recreational or prescription.
But I have always felt bad for those who did.

No, but we figured you had found some effective anti-aneurism meds.:D But seriously, ladies and germs. I discovered that a thin piece of 416 can be bent cold with a hammer. However, i wouldn't recommend it as a regular activity unless you really like things like tennis elbow.

Sorry. Trying to be humorous and (apparently) failed. No offence intended.

wow...I have cold forged a piece of 316SS for a guard to get a rough beaten look, it worked but and didn't need to do much to get the desired look but jeeze my arm hurt! hate to think how bad it'd be cold forging an entire blade!!!

forging encompasses two of my favorite things...fire,and hitting things with hammers-take either away and really, whats the point?
:D

I have cold forged a filleting knife from a 1" band saw blade mainly to get the curve up front, after a while it stops moving so I ground it a little on each side then beat it again, once I had the curve I wanted I tried to file the blade and a new file just skated across the blade.
ended up grinding the edge.

Nope, none of those medicines either, but I must confess to internet discussions occasionally resulting in a couple of aspirin and some outdoor time to get some fresh air. ;) I have a 16 year old, a 13 year old and a 9 year old, I have learned when to offer my assistance and when to say “hey, knock yourself out.” Mr. tattooedfreak, just to be clear I am not at all comparing you to a child, but I have also learned which topics are worth taking on in detail for a constructive discussion and which are better left as “I wouldn’t, but folks can do what they want”. ;)

The 300 series stainless that work hardens the most is 301 .Springs are made with this.

I got the joke and thought it was rather funny!:)
I saw a rapier Kevin just got done, so he's on a different harmonic right now.
To be honest, when I saw the title of the thread, I really didn't even want to open it!
Now, where's Don Juan Matus when we need him.

Tatooedfreak, I think you at least deserve a civil response. The fact that you asked the question makes me assume that you doubted the material on that website.
No, this is not a valid technique! The author obviously combines throughout his website the world of fiction literature with the world of technical fact with a catalyst of peyote, and or alcohol. Stick with the mainstream sources of information and avoid or deeply question the lunatic fringe. The reason techniques are widely accepted is that they make the most sense to the most people and require the least amount of effort for the greatest amount of return.
Remove the bookmark with a clear conscience!

Have fun!:)

I just thought it would be an odd thing to do and wanted to know what everyone thought of it, trust me I wasnt expecting a detailed breakdown of why it would or wouldn't be better than hot forging.
