Cold Steel 4MAX… $425???

Picked one up a couple of months ago for 200 , brand new , on sale . Same vendor is now 425 , most big name vendors are 425 also . i guess moving old stock out . Materials , build quality , sharpness on mine and so forth is perfect . All new 4maxes are Taiwan made , s35vn . This is the third generation I believe , USA , Italy , now Taiwan

You can blame-it on the mythical, 'Putin Price-Hike'. Seriously though, the 'Elite' is not worth $425 USD, more like $325 USD. The 4 Max has kind of reached the Cold Steel legendary-class status. Much like the Espada, Black Rhino, and Hatamoto. If you want a solid working 'cutter' the Scout is really all-that-you-need. Some folks drive Chevys, and others demand a Porsche. The 'green-scaled' Hulk-variant from DLT is also; a good trade-off for a Scout.

Recently bought the 4Max Elite on sale for $199. At that price, it is a really good buy. With the amount of G10, S35v and titanium alone, you really feel like you are getting your money’s worth. Not at over $400 though.

Then the 4Max Scout went on sale for $50. That was a ridiculously outstanding buy so bought 3 of them and gifted two of them to friends of mine for their birthdays.

Both the Elite and Scout are beautifully built knives. Everything is perfect on both models. I am particularly impressed with the blades. Grinds are even and perfect and scary sharp. The Elite is almost too nice to abuse so I’m glad I have the Scout for that. The best thing about the 4 Max line though is the ergos. I have over 50 folders and this may have the best ergos of all. You have to hold one to understand. Andrew Demko knew what he was doing.

$171 is the cheapest I've seen it. Decent at that price for such a hunk of steel and g10.

I have both and cannot imagine what I would need the 4 Max for that the Scout could not accomplish while the Scout is only $80 vs $425. The liners and hardware might be ever so slightly thicker on the 4 Max but the Scout is a beast regardless.

I never understood why the original 4 Max were so expensive other than the fact that they became an instant collectors as the biggest baddest strongest folder Cold Steel ever made Pre-GSM which drove demand, especially the early models that were Made in USA!

no idear. occasionally a dealer not a forum supporting one though so can't say their name........ sells them for much less, but still very pricey all things considered.
You can say any name here. You can only link to supporting vendors.

I picked up a 4max Elite recently for 200 on special at a well known retailer, totally worth it at that price. 425, not so much. A nice upgrade compared to the Scout, but honestly the Scout would do anything I needed to do.

Just looked and here in the UK going for anywhere from $5-600 😳 I've only got the Recon 1 in S35vn which cost me a little over 100 last year. Great knives but certainly not for that price. As others have said perhaps they're (GSM) trying it on on the knifes current "status". I'm not a folder type really more working fixed blades of which I'd pay for a Busse or similar US custom/semi custom but certainly not for a mass produced knife probably made in Taiwan.

I was always a kitchen knife guy and that money would get me a beautiful Japanese custom Gyuto from a world class Smith, crazy price!

$100 for a recon 1 isn't horrible.

No I think it was great value but was using it as an example because they aren't dissimilar knives and I can't see where 5 x the price comes from🤔
Oh ok, the way I read it I thought you said the recon 1 wasn't worth $100.

my guess would be a low production volume. what i want to know is why the old 20cv italy version is cheaper.
