Cold Steel 4MAX… $425???

I fall into the group that won t pay the new high prices. I can t tell why the new models are so expensive, and what the improvements are over the older classic models. And with the triad lock patent expiring, the brand is losing a valuable exclusive component.
I agree entirely.
Is the Tri-ad lock patent expiring soon? I know all patents expire eventually, but what is the end date on this one?
To be fair, the Tri-ad lock, combined with the generally hd designs and value prices are the components that made CS a favorite maker for me. Now days hd is generally popular and if the Tri-ad lock is gonna be available...

Well, after what I consider basically losing Cold Steel when gsm bought them out, it'd make me really happy if the designs were suddenly public opportunity. If you can share any info, that'd be great. Thanks bud.

Jeez, between this, and how quickly the lockbar tooth wears away to nothing (per failbot failbot ) , amazing they're still in business:rolleyes:
You're not serious are you?
I've had both my Italian 4Maxes, and carried and used them, for years now, and had no indication of such problems.

AFAICT the patent granted in 2008 (US 7,469,476 B2 to Demko) was a CIP-application dating back to August 21, 2006. The patent should therefore expire on August 21, 2026 - 20 years from the earliest priority date.

I've never seen the need for the Triad lock, or any lock really. Some of Y'all might love the heck out of it, and that's great.

The Axis lock patent ran out and some MFRs ran with it... but did people flock to those others in hopes of getting an Axis lock cheaper/better/on a neater knife? I dunno.

So do you think other MFRs are salivating, waiting for the Triad lock patent to expire so they can draw those "favorite lock types" in?

Couldn't tell ya myself.

This is an old thread, I get it.... but I took the opportunity to eyeball this knife again today.

Can't see any reason I'd spend that kind of money on it. Really can't see burning $80 on the "Scout" version either. Not without a company that stood behind it.

Insulting or Rude behavior
Ok, so find some of those complaints and post them here......
What exactly do you think will fail under hard use? Some wear on the coating won't make a bit of difference, and there is no way the screws are going to fail short of deliberate and intentional abuse.
Show us some pictures of your Cold Steel Recon1 while you are at it.....
holy fuckin butt hurt. switch to decaf before your heart explodes. do you talk to people like that in person? im inclined to get really immature.

Show me all of these destroyed Recon 1’s. Have you ever had one, or are you going off of something you think you read years ago?
man... are all the people on this site as un fun and draining as you to type to? christ man. even if i knew i was right id be half inclined to say you win to get you to go away. for fucks sake as unable to prove im right you until you prove youre right are arguing from authority a logical fallacy. i have used a recon 1. youre going to accuse me of lying so lets get that out of the way. you know what fuck it. its plastic. i dont trust it. the end.

Well, you brought it upon yourself by saying silly things like once a Recon 1’s coating wears off then there’s a cascade effect resulting in destruction of the flimsy plastic Recon 1.

And that the screws screw into plastic. And hard use would destroy a Recon 1. It sounds ridiculous because it is ridiculous, so I asked you for proof. You said you can’t find where you read that, yet maintain that you’re right, so here we are.

This thread makes me think of how flies turn dopey in the fall around here and will just walk right up to me on the workbench at the shop, or my desk at home, and walk around in circles waiting to be squashed.
