Cold Steel (biased?) I think I like them :P

I don't know much about STRIDER. I've only met them once at an LEO Show in Ca. and the stripes/bars on the knives put ME off :barf:

Now they have a SWEET deal going with Buck keeping the name on the pricey barred/stripped stuff and having Buck selling a low line in black for them.....money..money......money...:)

So my NEXT post will be about how STRIDER is a sellout j/k

BTW: searching on this forum sucks. I can't get any detail under simple or advanced and it just times out or you can't use the "BACK" button

strider and buck no longer have any connection FWIW.

Al right, I'm a newbie here, so I'll jump in. I'm also a newbie to being serious about knives. While I already see the difference between, say, a Chris Reeve and the Cold Steel Line, you gotta remember, we all started someplace. I tried a few low end Cold Steel products, and for the money, I think they are great!

I got the Super Edge and Kudu and they both work exactly as advertised. The Kudu is a cheap lock back with a unique locking mechanism and a very nice blade . . . all for well under $10. Hard to beat combination. The blade takes a nice edge, better than the one shipped, if you work at it a bit. The Super Edge is a handy desk item and I also use it as a general utility knife. Again, not bad for the price.

Do they compare in looks to a custom made blade? No way. They are like Volkswagon Beetles. They may not look great, they are not thoroughbred race horses, but they get the job done and they are reliable.

Are they the last word in knife quality? I don't think so. As others have pointed out, Lynn Thompson is an extraordinary marketer. Nonetheless, you gotta admire the guy for putting it on the line like he does. He's selling function more than form with the low end and some of his high end really does look nice. I don't have the bucks to see if they are as well made as the catalog looks. If the quality is proportional to the price, I'd have to say at the high end, it becomes a matter of preference for your knife brand.

go to google and type "site:bladforums.com _________"

where the blank is the search terms, and without quotes obviously.

"simply put..........." you are a Lemming  I asked for a reason or fact not fiction :p about Cold Steel.

BTW: I like my NEW "Gunsite II" and I might get a Canadian belt knife in the future for under $14 dollars with a sheath
banned if you really wanted 'information' you could have done a search..... there is alot of why cold steal sucks on bladeforums......

as for me my reasons are simple......... i have broken two of the recon tantos.....

What do you do to break two Recon Tantos's? I have had one for 15 years of rough use and it has one little scratch on it. Of course any knife can be broken by someone.

maybe he shot them

i once saw a totally pointless vid of sum guy using his rifle to "destruction test" a CS knife

:D

.

Actually, my favorite CS product is the simple Bushman. A simple, tough, no frills beater than can be thrown in with camp supplies or the tool box. I've had one going on 7 years now rumbling around in the back of various trucks and jeeps. Best $13 bucks I've ever spent of a fixed blade, actually.

The Bushman is the only Cold Steel knife I do not have that I want. I have a four inch tanto voyager folder that is a good knife, and I got it new for only forty dollars at a gun show. The Recon One folder I have was a big disappointment because I bought one of the first generation ones that did not have the G-10 handle scales of the current generation. Mine was so slippery in my hand that I ended up taking the handle scales off and drilling a bunch of holes through the scales to improve grip, then putting the scales back on. It looks UGLY now, but it grips much better. Cold Steel sucks for not using the G-10 scales in the first place. The fact that they switched so quickly from the first generation handles to the G-10 seemed to me like they were saying "Yeah, those handles suck....but here, we picked up the ball we dropped." They did the same thing with the AK-47, switching from aluminum handles to G-10 in like the second or third year the knife was available. But (thankfully) I did not buy one of those. Why in the heck would an American-owned knife company name a knife after an assault rifle that was invented by communists, is the one rifle that symbolizes terrorisim best, and, in the hands of enemies of the United States, has killed so many American soldiers? What's next, Cold Steel? A fixed blade model named the "Osama Bin Laden"? And, yes, I probably should have handled a Recon One before buying one. I wish Cold Steel would let first generation Recon One folder owners send them back to be replaced (for a small fee) with the G-10 handle model. But I also know that I can wish in one hand, and crap in the other, and see which one gets full first. I also wanted a Kobun until they switched it from AUS8 to Krupp. Why would you ever switch to a lesser quality steel? Hopefully I will soon get a Bushman and will then be done with Cold Steel.

The biggest problem with Cold Steel is that the credibility gap between their products and their marketing is sometimes pretty huge; worse than most knife manufacturers/importers. And let's be honest: most of them do exaggerate sometimes, or use unwarranted superlatives to describe their products.

But you know, in the same way that I have little respect for Ford as a company, I've been in a few Ford vehicles that really impressed me. Similarly, I have a pretty good opinion of GM and Toyota, but I've seen lemons in both.

Lately I have to admit. I've kind of grown to like Cold Steel a little more, mostly because of their $14-$15 GI Tanto, which is a real slap in the face to Strider ... and yes, I like their ad copy pointing that out.

i used it just like i do my busse knives, both recons broke throwing them, just like i do every day with my battle mistress..........

I have a few CS knives & I like'em , They are very good for the $$$$ spent.
My favorite folder from CS is the Prolite. I also love my Kukri Machete, you can't beat it for $15.00! Don't knock them if you haven't tried them !;)
