The next item I am buying is most likely going to be this;

At first I thought it was ugly, but I thought the regular bushman I had was pretty ugly too until I modded it.:)
Heres a good review;

http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/809342/

I will probably take the black coating off again and put some grip on the handle, and possibly flatten the false edge so it batons easier.
Hopefully cold steel starts making the mini bushman again soon so I can have the whole set.
At only 20 bucks or so, why not get one?;)

Looks like a great use and abuse knife for 20.00, and you can fasten it to a pole for use as a spear right?

Very good demonstration of different uses. Thanks! This type of review is what I look for...how often will I need to chop thru a concrete block outdoors?

I had both the mini and full size bushmans. Lot of blade for the price and light for their size. That was a very good review. I beat mine up pretty good. I learned to spear with the Bushmans. The sheaths could be better though.

Yep, awful sheath.
I was pumped to find that review, I just ordered it!
Now how long to make my hiking stick...

I will be getting one Fri., I am going to Smoky Mountain Knife Works on my way to Gatlinburg. Joezilla from Knife forums did a very good write up on it a while back. they are cheaper on the net. I think SMKW gets $26.99. but I will be there, so no shipping, only tax.

I got one just after Xmas, and cut myself right out of the box (actually it was sticking through the box at the time). Good knife, played with it a bit, but I don't know if it will replace my original bushman, which I consider my beater knife that I bring to back up my F1.
The bowie has potential though.

I had the "regular" Bushman and recently bought a mini that I like much better for hiking. I don't understand why the Bowie was developed-- do you think the extra width is much stronger or delivers better chopping follow-through, or is it just sex appeal?

Whatever the model, I view them as something to take a lot of abuse and for kits where more expensive knives would be prohibitive. It would be great if they could switch to molded plastic sheaths a la mora.

I've never even had a chance to hold a Bushman. Does the front of the handle (as it meets the blade) where the edge is folded not hurt your hands after a while, when choking up? This always bothered me when checking it out in pictures.

Anyone used this one versus the plain bushman?

Seems like it would be worth a try to play with at the price.

I cut a finger choil into my regular bushman, there was that space not doing anything so I figured I may as well.
It never bothered my fingers though, just felt good to choke up on it a bit.
I am hoping the extra width makes it a multi purpose tool, for digging and chopping and anything, I intend to abuse this one:D

Liam,

I've got the regular model, wrapped the handle with batter's grip. I like it a lot.

BTW, What is the chopper in your avatar? Very cool.

If you end up getting one, a good review would be much appreciated, especially as a chopper, digger, and in specific comparison to the regular Bushman. Thanks!

I'm glade the review was well recieved, thanks!!! Do you have a pic of the finger choil? I would love to see it as it is a fantastic idea

I'm not happy with the Bushman bowie. I rolled the edge chopping a 2x4.
The Bowie is to thin and soft. The original is much better.

You know because of my involvement with some others in the business I had a general dislike for Cold Steal. I do a lot of LE edged weapon awareness course and always pick up all the plastic knives that come out. I picked up one of their night shade series for cheap. It was a dagger that came in a plastic bag. I used the knife itself to poke through the bag, it broke the tip off!! I e-mail them with no response.

For several years I have been doing the Valley Forge Gun Show with a buddy who is a Strider dealer. When people walk up and ask why should they pay $400 for a knife I take out my SMF and drop it point first into the tile and say "that's why" and encouraged them to do that with their knife.

One of the airsoft kids that hands around the booth bought some Cold Steal fixed blade and tried the ol drop test which resulted in a bent point. It was one that is made to look like a Strider. You know, the ones in the adds about why would you want to pay $400 to buy a knife from a convicted felon.

I am not trying to add drama, but here in the Wilderness forum you guys will use your knives as tools and they need to stand up to resharpening like a chainsaw blade, not a one use POS like a ceremonial bread knife.

I agree with you about Cold Steel's advertising and the training vids I've seen were only good for amusement and humor, and Striders are tough as nails.

However, I do like a few of my Cold Steel knives and they have held up well for me. I've found that my Bushman has been very reliable, and is an excellent blade for $20! :)

Mercop, I am not sure if you have seen Noss's results from the Bushman tests.

I understand where you are coming from, but the bushman is a pretty good value in a cheap fixed blade. It held up much better than expected, I am not much for CS stuff either, but some of there stuff aint bad.

Nope, I have not. And to me it does not matter. As far as I am concerned their customer service sucks and they believe the public are idiots. There are way too many companies that don't suffer from any of these for me to spend any money on Cold Steal. Thanks for the link though. I will check it out.

Curious, since add to the drama is exactly what you have done. The only thing you've done in this thread, as you've contributed nothing to the actual topic.

I do recall a post on one of the forums about a Bushman Bowie failing. It may have been on knifeforums.

Shecky, mercop's words reflect how many of us feel about Cold Steel's overall attitude -- he's just a bit more direct. I consider his POS comment not as a slam against the judgment of the user, rather an impassioned reminder to be careful in our equipment choices.

Now, that all said, the Wilderness forum is not the place for discussion of the marketing strategies and attitudes of any knife companies. Bad mercop! Bad mercop!
