Cold steel bushman bowie

Heres a pic of my modded bushman, looks much nicer with the drop point, and is way handier with the choil.
My bowie was lost in the mail and was just re-sent today. Go Canada post!
Noss, I hope very much that you got the one bad apple, the original was so tough!

Looks like a great use and abuse knife for 20.00, and you can fasten it to a pole for use as a spear right?

Well... it is as cheap as it gets but unless you buy strictly for that... I wouldn't fasten any knife to any pole for use as a spear... I don't care how cheap they are, I just don't feel like breaking any blade.

Here in Spain things are not so cheap as they are there in USA... keep in mind that when you talk about Bushmans and Moras... I may end up paying more for the shipping than the knive itself.

Anyway I always thought that any of the Bushmans with those thin blades and tall grinds (are they flat?) have to be great slicers. Maybe the all arround cheap camp knife? (for food prep I mean...).

I am planning on making another order from USA and I was looking at Bens Backwoods and his selection of Moras, firesteel blanks and paracord... Anyone here thinks that I would be better off buying somewhere else and getting a Bushman instead of a Mora?

I would get one, see if Ben will pick up a bushman for you and ship it along with the other stuff, maybe? Worth a shot.

Thanks Liam... I guess that could be a great idea. Whenever I start buying from Ben... I will ask him if there is any chance he can do so. Would be great to have it all in the same package!

If that doesn't work I may just find the best price on eBay and get a few friends of mine to buy one as well.

That was probably a post i made when i shattered the blade while batonning wood with it.

Yes this rings a bell.

Which brings up a curious point. Noss mentions edge rolling and general softness. The shattered blade suggest something altogether different, kind of in the opposite condition. Perhaps the move of production has created conditions of poor quality control and consistency. Does anyone know, are both Bushman knives produced in China now? Or just the Bowie?

Maybe I did. I love the original one, It's a steal. The bowie is very thin compared to the very thin original. I don't know if they used the same blank and pressed it out thiner or just used a thiner piece of SK-5 or what. It was not what I was hoping for when I first heard about it.

... and they believe the public are idiots...

I'd like to make three points about Cold Steel, just from my perspective:

(1) Face it, the vast majority of people really are idiots!

(2) Business is business, and I find it hard to criticize CS for selling crap if that's what some of their customers want. I, too, wish that Camillus had not gone under and that Cold Steel's good Carbon V blades were still being made.

(3) CS has in the past sold (and probably still does sell) some very useful tools, and often for not a lot of money. The trick is knowing enough to understand what really is a good value and what is more likely to be junk. One way to arrive at this "knowing enough" is to read reviews of edged tools on Blade Forums and other sources, especially when the reviews stick to the tool in question and don't get bogged down in personalities or resentment.

Mercop, this is not intended to start a "flame war" with you or anybody else. But reading where people are bad-mouthing Cold Steel or Lynn Thompson gets a little repetitious. I've bought some of their products for quite a few years now, and I've been satisfied with most of them, especially considering that they didn't cost me two week's pay. I choose to ignore their often flamboyant advertising and I take with a grain of salt some of their claims.

shecky: There are some QC issues just by looking at the bowie compared to the original. The blade is angled from the handle a few degrees. they appear bent and are bent. The hollow handle is all uneven at the butt. These problems did not appear on the originals and this is just looking at the knife.

I know mine is not the only one with these flaws because BRASMAN posted photos of his and mine was the same except his blade was angled even more then mine.

Dr. Mudd, perhaps you missed my post that this is not the forum for discussing CS's marketing? :D Bad Mudd! Bad Mudd!

Back to the Bushman series of knives now...

I know there have been at least two generations of the original Bushman because I have both. The early one, given to me by a friend, has a matt black blade finish and came in a thin leather (or imitation leather) sheath. Those I got a year ago last Christmas have a shiny black blade finish and came in a cordura-type sheath. At that time they were on sale @ 2 for $30 and I was pleasantly surprised when I received them. The old and the new ones have the same design, a design I see no need to replace with the Bowie model.

Since then the Bowie Bushman has come out. I think I read somewhere that the Bowie version is imported from China. Can anyone confirm that? Is the original Bushman being made in China now, too?

In the opening post here a Bowie Bushman review at http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/sh...hp?tid/809342/ was linked to. I noticed in that series of photos (appreciated, by the way) that the open seam of the rolled steel handle of my originals seems to be closed now on the Bowie version being reviewed. Can anyone tell me if that is being welded shut now and ground down? It's on the left side of the handle if you want to go back and look closely.

I bought 6 Bushmen on closeout from CS about 8 years ago for $10 each. They have been outstanding tools for the money.
