Yes, The Bowie handles are welded and ground down. I don't know if the new originals are welded or not since I don't have one.
I had the original mini. It was VERY soft. If I owned another, I would use it for a spear point, digging tool, or anything else. I would not use it as a knife. While I doubt it would break, it did not hold an edge for beans. I really liked the idea, but did not care for the handle taper, or it's slick surface. I would think of it as a spear tip in a sheath, but only if they are still tempered soft like the others were.

Just got my bowie, it was the one that was lost so looks like I am getting 2!
I have to agree with those that say they are inferior, it is thinner, it's hollow grind, (not good on such a thin blade.) Looks like I will be destroying 1 of these if the other one comes, and I will probably order a few more of the originals. (which were not welded btw)
