Cold Steel Canadian Belt Knife

I have the Grohmann #4, great knife. I'd save my money and wait until I could get a real DH Russell. Lee Valley sells a kit for $42. See their "gifts" / "adventures" section.

Great tip Pinetree. . . Assembling it myself would be an awesome way to shave a few bucks off of the price.

I'd still like to hear opinions on the Cold Steel version tho.

Unfortunatly Coldsteel blantly ripped this off the Grohmann company in nova scotia, It will cut well, and be pretty sturdy, but the fact that they stole the desgin, Dont buy it. Again save you money and get the real thing from D.H. russell (Grohmann)

I live in los angeles so it might be a cool ride to the knife sale they have in May... If anyone else been to one before did they realy have a sale that was worth going there in the first place????

well.. i own the real grohmann #4 and admire its simplistic beauty like most others who own this knife.

it is elegant in that the smooth curve lines of the blade and its unique design make it one of a kind.

hence why i feel it is said to see a knock off version made by cold-steel.

i like cold-steel knives but when it comes down to it. i'd rather get the real deal :D

the only coldsteel knives that i own is the bushman and the military R1. although i have contemplated purchasing the san-mai trailmaster or recon scout.

a friend of mine gave me a piece of advice and said. go buy 3 grohmann #4's with the price your gonna be paying for those other knives (coldsteel)

i also believe in supporting our economy and local businesses.

i am currently training for 4-10 day treks and this knife is on my belt at all times.

now that i'm done kinda "blah-ing" on your page :D

my opinion is that you should save yourself the money and trouble and get yourself a real grohmann #4.

from my research on the forums the CBK by coldsteel feels like a mora. so why not just get a mora then? :D

its your money you decide ^^

but once again i'd recommened the grohmann.

cheers

I bought one , a canadian belt knife

they suck

OK , it was realy sharp out of the box , and had a sheath with it , but it was a cheap sheath and for the $$ I expected a LOT better on both the knife and sheath

the blade I got was stainless , and tho it was sharp , it blunted fast , I resharpened it and gave it to an elderly friend ( 78 yr old lady who is getting her BOB together) I figure itll do her more service than me

Isn't the Cold Steel R1 a knock off of the Randall Model 1?

I've gotta agree with Myal here - the stainless steel Grohmans do not hold an edge well at all. I have been very disappointed in mine.

If you get a Grohman, try to find the carbon steel version. It will hold an edge much better than the stainless.

Or check out the new Canadian Special from Bark River. It uses A2 (carbon), and is of excellent quality.

yup its a knock-off of the Randal R1, i bought this knife as one of those "spur the moment" type buys while i was passing the knife store.

although its a knock off, the san-mai steel seems to make it a pretty decent knife. i've put it through its paces and it holds up well.

the only reason i recomended against the CS CBK is because of these reasons:

1) i am canadian and i like the idea of owning a canadian knife :)

2) the cordura sheath and polypropene handle that comes with the CBK kinda ruins the traditional wood and leather style.

3) from research on the forums from owners who have the CBK it seems as though their experience with the knife is not satisfactory

4)the CBK is made of 4116Krup or whatever that german stainless is which may be a great steel for food preparation but in a survival situation may not hold out as well as one would hope for.

and fonly how are you liking your grohmann? is it seeing alot of action? :D

i know i sures heck like mine  its been seeing alot of wood lately.

i use a diamond pen hone to bring back the edge right back after i baton through a stack of wood and it holds up mighty well, shaving sharp i might say

im getting a custom sheath made by normark for the grohmann #4 because the leather strap that secures it in place keeps getting cut as a i draw the knife.

oh shes doin fine, and yeah, I've beatin the hell out'of it :D

Yeah, about the sheath, thats why I ordered mine with a military sheath, it has a flap that comes right over the handle of the knife. Nice and secure, and I dont worry about cutting the leather.

I'm not sure if he was talking about the real one, but, I gotta say, you must have gotten the crappy one out of the bunch, The Grohmann stainless knives are a very good quailty.

Gotta agree with Fonly here.
I've had the ss r1 and jump knife for years with no problem dulling too fast or sharpening up quick.

PS-+1 for all who say to save and get the real deal as opposed to the Cold Steal version.

Cheers!

Ive have a Grohmann stainless, they hold an edge well, but i want a carbon just to do some testing between the two

I can't speak highly enough of my Grohmann knives. They really straddle the line between dependable user and elegant display piece, and they see more use than any of my other blades.

I've recently removed the handle scales from my #4, with the intention of replacing them with Chechen wood and black spacers. I may also decide to upgrade my sheath before hiking season starts in earnest. I'll post some pics of the finished product in use.

My recommendation to the original poster is to save up and go for the real thing, both because it's better and because I really can't stand Cold Steel's knock-off approach to product development. A good compromise is the 'do it yourself' kits that Grohmann makes, which is cheaper than buying a complete model.

All the best,

- Mike
