Cold Steel Canadian Belt Knife

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. I think I am going to get one of those kits. On the other thread which hikeeba linked to someone had posted a link to a sight that had the kits for 20 dollars. . . Just a few dollars more than the CS version and I get to make it (or at least assemble it) myself.

Well, I'm late to the party but I would have to agree with the general consensus here: get the original. 99% of the time I have nothing against Cold Steel knocking off other people's work, but in this case, the real deal is much better quality and not really that much more money anyway.

I would buy a cold steel strider knockoff before I would lay out the bucks for the real deal...but nobody who was going to buy a Strider is going to just buy the el cheapo version instead - different market completely. (not that I was going to buy either.) But I would buy five Grohmanns before I bought one CS CBK.

I don't think I saw the link to the kits but I'd be really interested in getting one. Could someone re-post the link here?

Hello to everyone. I registered for the sight a few weeks ago but this is my first post. I really love what I have seen so far. The amount of knowledge on this site is amazing.

The question I had is about Bladematrix. I saw on the link provided on the first page of this thread that they have the knife kits for $20. My question is if the kits are in stock. For Qty. in stock it says there are 19999 of them, but when you search for Grohmann knives on the sites there are no kits listed. I plan on calling them tomorrow, but I thought maybe I could get some clarification here first.

Just saw the post above mine. Here is the link http://www.bladematrix.tv/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=29914

To start with, I own neither of the knives. The reason I am posting is to address the topic of design that has been brought up.

It seems that Cold steel has attempted to take a proven pattern, and applied it to a product aimed at a specific market. While other companies make similiar knives aimed at other markets, no one has addressed the market CS has with their version.

How many people are going to buy the 16 dollar knife instead of the 58 dollar one? Grohmann would sue if they felt that this version would impact their sales enough for them to profit from the suit.

Does an inexpensive, plastic handled knife w/ no name steel and sabre ground blade take any sales away from a classic styled, wood handled, flat ground blade with a leather sheath from a classy maker? I doubt it. While the knives have the same shape, the similarities end there.

While I do not neccesarily approve of CS's methods, I believe that there is much ado being made over nothing.

If a person wants a 16 dollar knife, buy one. If you want a 60 dollar knife, buy one. If you would like to have an inexpensive version of a Grohmann, without spending money on a cheaply made piece of equipment, E-mail Grohmann and see when they will be making such a line.

The only two sites I can find that are based in the USA that sell the kits are Knives Direct and Cove Cutlery. Knives Direct has them for around $50-60, but their shipping is $15. No thanks, I can get the complete version from A.G. Russell for that. Cove Cutlery has them starting at $70. I didn't bother to check the shipping. Hopefully they are in stock at Bladematrix. If they are, I plan on buying several and using them as gifts.

Copied and pasted from the Bladematrix Company Info page:

"How do we do it!
# We buy direct from the many different manufacturers and distributors.
# When you place your order with us we verify the current availability of the items on the order.
# Availability is around 95% of the items on the site.
# We carry instock abour 30% of what is shown on the website. The remaining will be shipped to us from our suppliers within 4-5 days.
# We do not charge your credit card until product is ready to ship.
# If the items are not in stock, then they are ordered and shipped to Bladematrix for redistribution to you.
# This process takes about 4-5 days.
# We will then send you a tracking number or shipping status email for your order.
Example!
# If you order something 3 day select , if it is not in stock then it will not start shipping for about 5 days."

So if you need your knife quick, don't order from Bladematrix. If speedy delivery isn't an issue then go for it. I'm going to go for it myself.

Thanks a lot for the info Salamander. I really want one for my dad for father's day, so time is not an issue. I am going to order one now and I will come back and post here if they are in stock and what the estimated time on the shipping is. Thanks again.

Edit: I just tried to order one and it won't let me. It says to call the store. I guess that means they are not in stock and they can't get them now. Hopefully they can get some before June.

I'm not sure if he was talking about the real one, but, I gotta say, you must have gotten the crappy one out of the bunch, The Grohmann stainless knives are a very good quailty.

Yup, it's the original. I bought it in Canada back in the '80s when I lived in the NWT. While the fit, finish and sheath were excellent, it never, and I mean never, kept an edge.

Tried different angles, different grits, high polish, "toothy" edge. They would all turn to butter knife sharpness with the first use.

To say the least, I was disappointed in the knife.

Mine may have been a fluke (though I know of several others who have experienced the same), or they may have corrected their tempering. I hope so. But I will not soon spend my own money on a stainless Grohman, regardless of how much I like the design.

Fonly, is the knife at the link you posted definitely the Grohmann style? It doesn't look to have the same curves as the #1/#4 (though the pic is pretty small).

Also, anyone know the difference between that kit and the one in the other link?

My #4 stainless takes a great edge. I had an original as well for a while but the handle was just too narrow for my tastes, that one was the same for sharpness.
Some of the nicest full flat grinds anywhere.

Yeah, its for the #1, flat grind stainless. Its just they have a picture of the #3 on the box.

ohh, and the kit from bladematrix is the same knife, just their showing the contents of the kit.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info! I think that I'd prefer the #4 a bit, and it wouldnt' be a huge leap in price to just get one put together correctly already.
