Cold steel cpm 3v chipped

I think he referred to me, too bad all my posts contributed to the topic unlike his.

On topic, anyone can find a broken knife pic of just about any knife and start a thread which is exactly what knifechop did.

Well, a pic of a broken knife WITH the photographer saying that he was batoning.

I don't think this is the "knife's" fault for it being too thin for the type of torquing and twisting that can happen when you baton something. Given how far out the break is, I would wonder if the baton was being used on the spine closer to the handle, which would also contribute to twisting. Many of the chipped Schrade Extreme knives were also claimed to be happening during batoning, not chopping.

Thin blade section are going to be very sensitive to any kind of side load.

Love a thread full of hearsay and speculation. Truly riveting!

One 1 Star review, one 3 Star review, one 4 Star review, and ten 5 Star reviews on the site that this all was pulled from. If I were judge this product by the reviews alone, it looks to be top notch. Although it might not be for everyone and lemons can slip through.

Would be nice to converse with the fellow that owes the knife, but alas, he is but a ghost on the internet.

I have spoken with our customer service team and this knife hasn't been sent in to us here at HQ.
We've received no calls or emails that I can find about this.
Without getting the knife in hand and testing it I have no idea how or why it failed.

Our warranty covers defects in materials and craftsmanship. If the knife comes in and it's our fault it failed, the owner will immediately be sent a replacement.
Until the knife gets in our hands it's all speculation.

Note that as a general rule batoning is considered abusive under our warranty, HOWEVER, regardless of how the blade was used, if it failed because of a defect on our end, then I'm pretty sure it'd still be covered.
I suggest sending the knife to our guys to check out, or at least just contacting us. We're here to help!
Our contact info, including a toll free number can be found at www.coldsteel.com
Thanks!

I HATE it when we do this on the forum - we shred the OP and assume user error straight out of the gate. Look, I know not every response in this thread has done so but more than enough have and I'll be honest I think it sucks. This should be a positive, supportive place for enthusiasts at all levels.

My read, the OP used his knife, (irrespective of how), it chipped, he's really disappointed, he wants to share that disappointment but instead we armchair quarterback his 'user error'/'incorrect batoning technique', etc., etc. Seems like we're waaaay to keen to look like experts. He's a Gold Member who's been around for over 2 years but we question his intentions?!?

It's stuff like this that drives me away from what should be a great place to hang out.

Let's try being civil as opposed to burning other enthusiasts away from a great pasttime/ hobby.

Ben

Disappointment is fine, but it is not helpful. People "armchair quarterback" because the "actual quarterback" doesn't give any useful information. It's entirely possible that he was completely in earnest with what happened; however, his own skill and knowledge level will influence his perception of the event; and they are essential variables to know if someone is going to use this information for good.

If he's been a Gold Member for over 2 years, then why would he not be more specific in how it happened? Where has he been hanging out? How could he not know?

Good on you CS! Of course all of this is completely irrelevant because the person who has the broken knife has not posted it here. It is an Amazon review folks!

Again, the owner of the knife did not post this. This was pulled from an Amazon review. Sure would be great to hear from the owner of the knife. All we can do now is 3rd party speculate, which is of no use what-so-ever. Might as well start a new thread in general about why knives break if we are going to speak of hearsay and vagaries.

Best way to end any dispute, it's only one sided with no confirmation till then. I'm not a fan of unsubstantiated claims of failure and poor quality. It's easy to find a pic of a broken knife and claim catastrophic failure but without any proof it's just here say and not even worthy of discussion since all discussion would be moot till the knife was sent back for testing and would only tend to lend a negative shadow unjustifiably to CSU and that's not fair in any world.

BTW I have several CSS products from the original 80s Urban Pal to my TiLite and have had no complaints in 35 years of use, could you guys please bring back the large Twistmaster, with the current trend towards simple and old style the Opinel has seen a big resurgence and the Twistmaster would be a welcome addition to the DCS line again, :)

This times 1000! The twistmaster was hella cool.

This thread is worthless without the original original poster speaking up and answering our questions. This isn't even speculation. The unknown reviewer was trolling his own thread. This thread should be closed.

I don't think I've ever seen this from you. Zmr Benyamin.
Should be closed?

As if I was the one who derailed a thread about a chipped knife by insisting that it never happened.

Well put. I realize reading this that people are hung up on 3V as some sort of super-tough steel... I'm guessing that such a picture from an INFI blade would bring the whole forum down... Thank God that hasn't happened... Yet.

Mental note: Don't baton anything cross-grain, especially if small in diameter...: The smaller diameter probably can concentrate any twisting force...

Yeah, in times passed he just closes em. Never the suggesting type from what I've seen. He comes, states his reasons, and closes.

He is the law... Judge Thredd.

I was right , baton then twist !!!LOL
That was my first thought too. One of the things I love about Cold Steel is how even with all their "over the top" marketing, they keep edge bevels thin, even, and sharp. Actually I think they have some of the best fit and finish in the industry (despite having such a wide range of products). I have yet to buy a Cold Steel knife with an overly thick edge, and they're pretty much the only manufacturer to maintain that kind of cutting edge across the board, regardless of marketing or backlash. They sell knives that cut and after 20 years of using their products (I got a Voyager as a kid, the last knife I bought was a Large Espada) I have yet to see them break from their foundations.

Yup, but this is Cold Steel's room in the house. My guess is that Mr. Benyamin is extending them the courtesy of handling it how they see fit.

This is off-topic, so apologies in advance, but aren't you going in for marrow transplant today? Thought I read that recently and sorry to derail a bit, but good luck today, Mr. moniker.

Thanks, man. It's much appreciated. That may have contributed to me being up and on Bladeforums at 3am. ;)

And Mr. Moniker is my father, you can just call me Insipid. :p

Heal fast and get well, we need more good guys like you around.

Thank you all, sincerely. I'll be in the hospital for about 3 weeks, but I'll still be around here providing general annoyance and the occasional contribution. After all, the hospital nannyware whiffs completely on Bladeforums! :D

Good luck and I hope everything goes OK
You seem like a nice guy and from your posts I think we would get along really well!
