Cold Steel: new for 2012

Thank goodness somebody came up with a new buckler shield for 2012! My old EDC shield was getting worn down to a nub. That buckler would look pretty sweet duracoated in a nice desert digi-camo... it'll make me the disco king of the roller-rink at my next 'Run 'n Plunder' with the fellas! Arrrrh, matey!

;):D:rolleyes:

Now i'm disappointed, after seeing the info on their website....Faux G10, delrin stag? Their sword prices are still extremely high. Come on, you can do better than that. I wish they would contract another USA maker (like Camillus) to make some of their knives again.
What, you expected real stag at that price? Camillus was making some of the Cold Steel line until they closed their doors and gutted the factory leaving CS high and dry. There is no U.S. Camillus factory now.
It would be next to impossible to find an American source at reasonable price and quality for many of CS's products.

When can I buy a mini recon? Looks good but I would pay more for a non painted blade...

You can't buy them since they aren't actually in production yet. CS' folders reportedly have a nice satin finish under the coating, so you can just remove it yourself.

4116 is pretty ok stuff. Very similar in performance to SAK steel and nobody complains much about those. Great corrosion resistance, moderate edge retention and impact resistance, and excellent ease of sharpening.

It's basically a copy of the mora though, and 4116 isn't anywhere near as good as sandvik steel.

Bigger blade at 5". And a hollow handle. Also it has a firesteel on the sheath. Should compete with the Mora Bushcraft Survival since it's very competitively priced compared to the ~$70 MSRP Mora has on theirs. I'm not saying I'd rather have one versus the other, but I think that providing the build quality is there it's not a bad package for what they're asking.

Last year they added more to their page for a few days after releasing the initial lineup, so worry not; there may be more to come.

Some of these are really cool, and daddy wants. Sure someone at Cold Steel has been looking pretty closely at KA-BAR catalogs the last few years, but what else is new?

I love the new spear point design on the Recon folders.

I think the idea of a tiny recon is great; kind of fits the needs of a trad slipjoint, but with the all-important addition of a coating that "eliminates glare and light reflections, which may give its user away." For god's sake, please don't let the coating on my two-inch knife give me away! :D But seriously, these could be potentially cool and useful (but only if they're as well-made as the full-size recons).

A lot of the other stuff is really fun even though I'd never buy any of it. But I'm aware that there are plenty of people out there that will buy the hell out of stuff like a buckler, something approximately zero other big companies would provide, so more power to Cold Steel for these kind of things.

The Mini Recon with the tanto blade looks pretty decent. But honestly, wtf is with the medieval shield?

4116 is similar to the 12C27M used in moras, except the 4116 has some moly and vanadium in it, and the nominal composition allows twice as much silicon.

Im already planning to get the jungle machete! And the survival edge looks like cold steel's version of a feature-packed big mora... i'm interested :)

Looks like a polypropylene-handled Boomslang, though larger and thinner.

More and more like "Comic-Book Steel." I honestly think they're past the point of no return in anime-ninja land. Or toon-town. Or wherever they're outsourcing now.

I shall not be patronizing this company again.

after the tanto lite and outdoorsman lite last year, I was hoping for a tai pan lite this year.

oh well.

Mini Recons are such a great idea but I have to agree on two very important things, what in the holy mooses is "faux G10 " ?? ( notice that is on the micro not the mini.. ) G10 is not such a rare and expensive material that you have to fake it , is it ?? Maybe I'm wrong here... and then the price ! The full size Recons are 30$ or more under the price on the new mini's on CS site... whats up ?

The buckler - come on now , who doesn't need a good shield ? :D
