Cold Steel Sisu

Wow, I think you know more than you let people know! You're not Rick S from Knifeforums are you?
Would be more than happy to discuss puukkos with you.

Thanks for the help Dan, I have a Kullervos 10 from Kellam. Hope to get more puukkos soon. Will talk to you again.

I would add that one should never ask about Cold Steel knives on this forum, you will receive mostly negative answers simply because people don't like the companies owner, not answers based on the quality of the knives. I too think Lynn Thompson is way over the top in his advertising and his "demos" but that does not affect the quality of his knives. Also I would point out that Cold Steel has been copied many times. Saying you should buy and original rather than a copy is silly, does this mean you shouldn't ever buy a Kimber but only Colts as the Kimber is just a "copy"? I know this post will be blasted because I am suggesting Cold Steel knives are good quality but ya know what? I don't care what other people think...only what I think and how a knife actually performs. I don't buy the flavor of the month or what "peers" say I should buy...I decide for myself.

I do agree the San Mai knives are a tad high priced tho, I would be just as happy with the Finn Bear.

Absintheur, I think the issue is that if you're not well educated on particular knife style thinking you'll get a good sample by buying the CS version could lead to buying something that's worth nothing in the long run. Educating oneself in the subject is priority and if you still feel CS product is what you're looking for, go for it. I was certainly pleasantly surprised at Finn Bear. It seemed to work well and the price was very good. Sisu seems like a good knife, just not for the price requested. The thing is, I have never held one so I can't say for sure.

Would be more than happy to discuss puukkos with you. Elen is very much in the know also on nordic knives.

Dan, I am not Rick S from knife forums. The funny thing is my last name begins with s, but I don't go on knife forums. This forum is enough for me. It is very good. I worked with Thom B. who is well known here. He knows I am a very serious knife enthusiast. I am pretty busy, but I try to find time to chat about knives, whenever possible.

But is the Cold Steel Sisu an improvement in materials over the original Hackman?

I have seen the CS Sisu priced at about $170 -shipping included on Ebay. Is that reasonable? Does anyone think the CS Sisu will go up in value over time? And would Tapio Wirkkila approve of it?

Does Lynn Thompson ever poast or read this forum?

I'm not a big steel snob, so I'm not the person to ask. I wouldn't pay 200 USD for it, either. I'd top out around 120 for something like this.

I took your sage advice & bought one for $125. Thanks.

As for Lynn Thompson, he married a girl from da U.P, so that's A-Okay in yoopernauts™ book.

BTW, I have a Cold Steel ball headed Indian war club. It has major heft and I'm sure it would do waymore damage than a baseball bat. One hit from the club would put down anyone not in Oddjob's(The Goldfinger henchman) league.

I think I might look at the CS Urban Dart next. I kind of like the design.

Yooper,
Where did you find a sisu for $125? I wouldn't mind picking one up fron that kind of money.
Rick

wow, $400? really?

this just doesn't seem to be on the same level, as, say, a CRK Umnumzaan for the same money. Then again, duh.

I got one from ebay. It was "like new". I had to wait a coupla weeks until one came along priced right. Good luck. I'm happy with mine. Pictures to follow soon...

Does anyone have any thoughts on this knife?

Is Cold Steel's SAN MAI 3 a choice blade steel? Is VG-1 better that VG-10? Is VG-1 even considered to be a super steel?

Any advice rendered will be gratefully appreciated by me. Thanks in advance...

San mai steel that cold steel makes is a gimick. It's made with 420j2 outer layer, and aus8a,or vg1 core depending on what model or when it was made.Aus8 as we all know is a average performer and is considered lower end
stainless to todays standards.Vg1 is only a pinch better then aus8,and does not compare with vg-10 at all.The san mai steel doesn't make sense to me,why would you put two corrosion resistant and tough steels together. It takes away from the purpose. For ie steels 420j2 forge welded to a rock hard
zdp 189 would be a better choice while justifying the high prices.

I ran my Sisu thru the sharpmaker a coupla times. I noticed some scratches to the formerly pristine sides of the blade? Am I doing something wrong? Should I abandon the sharpmaker for use on this knife? What's the best way to sharpen it?

Any assistance rendered will be gratefully appreciated by me. Thanks in advance...

I agre with most here. I like CS knives and many of them are a good value. That one you are referring to is over priced big time IMO. It would be a decent deal at about 1/3 of the asking price.

I'm thinking of getting a strop bat to treat the edge. But how about buffing out the scratch?

Any suggestions?

I don't see myself belittling Wirkkala as a person. I'm merely saying I find the puukko he designed to be nothing special in terms of performance, ergonomics or indeed anything except physical appearance. It looks special, that's for sure, but that's about it, in my experience. .

I think Mr.Wirkkala would have agreed with you. He has said that he wanted to improve Finnish Puukko but this effort was in vain. There was not much to improve after what he thought generations have done before him.
Puukko is a good tool For Finnish climate and nature, it is not suited for all corners of the world but hold it's own any given day.

well, all this makes my day! someone gave me one tonight and I must say it's quite a piece of work for a factory made knife.beautiful balance and form.

You could try out the finn bear for around $12: same design, polypropylene handles and 4116 krupp stainless steel.

Then you could save yourself some money.
