Cold Steel SR 1 Issues...Again!

I had purchased one of these earlier this year and had some issues with it. I recently decided to give this knife another try and of course, there is significant vertical blade play. In general, why is the QC on many different brands of knives so hit or miss lately? I just don’t understand that when I pay the price that I could’ve bought a cheap (but durable) pistol for, I get a knife with lock rock. This knife should’ve never left the factory. Ok. The rant is over now

I agree. I also did a short review on ColdSteels website about the new SRK . My post has to go through "moderation" before its displayed. The only negative I posted was that I prefer the SS over carbon. We'll see if it gets posted. In the meantime, I ordered a counterfeit SRK to do a review of. I wll be comparing the two.

I got an SR1 recently and it had vertical play. Never seen that before with a CS TriAd. There was something else that was off too. The step in the lockbar was ground crooked. I immediately boxed up the knife and returned it. Truthfully, I don't really like the design anyway. The handle seems massive in comparison to the blade. I also think they should use a less coarse G-10.

yep. the handle is massive compard to the blade. makes what could be a really great heavy duty folder awkward looking. also yep on g10 texture to course and vertical play issues.

Is Cold Steel aware of these issues with this particular model?

I would guess that they are aware and are addressing the issue. Unfortunately, they rarely participate in the forum so we're in the dark.
I returned mine to the dealer, but otherwise if I had an SR1 with bladeplay I'd send it in to warranty with a note describing the problem.

That's exceptionally obnoxious, particularly on a folder that is intended to be at least somewhat the end-all be-all folding tank. I know vertical play may not affect the strength of the knife in any real way, but it sure detracts from the über-strong feel of the Triad lock.

If its used a lot I would think it could get worse, its not designed for slop. Either way so easily checked at the factory there is no excuse(yes especially for the price) for this. I would expect the blade to be centered and no play or I move on. To many knives not enough money lol.

Yep, way too many knives at even a fraction of the price that are of better quality.

It is these exact QC type issues that made me abandon Benchmade as a company

Mine too from the first batch was a solid lock up. I sanded the scales to reduce texture and also filed and sanded them to reduce height. Ended up being remarkably like the feel of my AD-10. I gave it to my son-in-law.

Sorry to hear quality has dropped off.

I agree that vertical play takes away from the perception of a solid, strong locking system. And on a knife built for strength , this is particularly bothersome.
Fortunately my SR1 has come with the best Triad lock I ve ever gotten on a Cold Steel folder. Completely solid lockup and rather easy to unlock when open. My minor complaint about CS is that some of my bigger knives come with such a stiff lock up that the only way I can close them with one hand is to heavily compress the lock bar and push the knife closed against my leg. I can't reach the blade with the fingers of my one hand when I have to push so hard on the lock bar to disengage the blade. No such trouble with my SR1.
I was tempted to pick up a second SR1 at a greatly reduced holiday sale price last week but I decided not to based on the history of problems with that model.

mine was from the first batch for sale as well. lockup seemed solid until i wiggled the very end of the blade or the tip. it has vertical play. when i wiggled it from a bit back from the blade tip, felt like no play. the vertical play isnt horrible, less than most nib lockbacks.....but not like the other dozen plus tri-ads i own that are rock solid tip or middle of blade.

so quality didnt fall off...it wasnt there from the get go. i still dislike the handle length to the blade. looks odd. also pocket clips and cold steel g10 texture. id pay anpther 10 bucks for a polished area under the clip like about every other brand, except emerson of course, does on rough textured g10 knives.

My vertical play could be felt half way back on the spine. The seller swore that he checked it, but he obviously did not. I sent it back and considered giving the SR1 a third try, but I think I’ll look elsewhere

I’m sad to hear this. Mine is a rock solid tank. Symmetrical blade grind, as well as lockbar.

Been my daily carry for months
