Cold Steel SR 1 Issues...Again!

I feel very privileged because my SR1 locks up solidly and is smooth to operate. It's a great knife.

Did that, didn't help made it worse if anything. Plus, I found the screws will never tighten down all the way because they just keep turning.

This knife is a mess, unfortunately. Why use such small and fine threaded assembly screws? The Code4 uses bigger screws...CS screwed the pooch on this.

The only thing I could guess, would be a wider/stouter spring (like the 4Max) and a wider diameter Triad pin.

That said, my SR1 is rock solid in the lockup dept-smooth to boot.

It is disheartening to hear these reports tho...

The screws on both sides screw into a free floating barrel. You have to hold the screw opposite in place, in order to tighten it.
Thanks, I got up out of bed and tried that and it tightened right up. Also, seems the pivot is now at a sweet spot and no lock rock, plus not so tight it won't thumb open fairly easily. Makes me like the knife 100% better!

When I got my SR1, I had to do some adjusting-the Blade was off center when closed-rubbed one of the scales. I figured out a way to dial in the centering. It is now, and has been for some time, my daily driver. I’ve beaten the snot piss out of this knife. Still great for me.

There are some critiques I have (wider spring, and to a lesser extent, a thicker Triad Pin-like the Rajah II’s)

But overall love the knife.

A better alternative might be that new bush ranger folder coming out. doesn't look like it has the same hardware, and has a much nicer blade shape.

Blade play and screw stripping have both been addressed with the manufacturer to ensure this problem doesn't persist or continue in the SR1 clip point or tanto versions. However, we were not aware of these problems until very recently as we only received a couple with issues in recent weeks and it was made even clearer to us in seeing this thread. We want to make this right and give you the knife you paid for. If you're unhappy with your SR1 or any knife you have bought from us in the past or in the future, please contact us directly via Cold Steel customer service and send your knife in. That's the only way we can correct our mistakes in production and make you happy with your purchase. Call us at 800-255-4716 or email customerservice@coldsteel.com.

CSK - thanks for posting. It is very good to see a rep here. I like my SR1 and like the looks of the tanto version, so it is reassuring to hear there is some QC underway.

Greatly appreciate your participation in this thread. The SR1 folder has the potential to be one of Cold Steel s best outdoor knives and a real credit to the company. Thank s for the effort to improve the fittings and assembly.
I have an SR1 that appears very well made, but I scared to try to disassemble it. I like mine as it is.

Took the younguns up to the snow today. While I am not gentle with this knife as my EDC, I really wanted to work it.

So I always get the fire going as soon as we get out, because cold kids are whiney kids.

Now I did bring a bundle of seasoned pine logs up with us, but I only used the SR1 to build the fire. I was bringing the baton down like Mjolnir. And when I baton, I throw my upper body weight down on the handle to coincide with the baton’s blow. And in addition to the batoning and feather sticks, I also used the spine to scrape Maya Dust off of a stick of fat wood. The blade, tang, and rocker lock was nicely coated in pine resin and dust. No lock issues, or disengaging issues, whatsoever.

Job done, no blade play, or lock rock. Although, it was not a marathon session by any means. From my first baton blow, until ignition from my ferro rod, was like 15-20 minutes. I really work to get that fire up and going, ASAP.

But, the SR1 handled it well. And being that I was wearing winter work gloves, the thumbstuds were still easy to use-I couldn’t flick it open, but could easily bring it from closed to open, with just my heavily gloved thumb. The large thumb studs work well.

You say the manufacturer has been addressed. Who makes it?

Yeah, the misground step in the lockbar. I had the same thing with an SR1. I returned the knife but not principally for that reason. I just wasn't a big fan.
I have a Talwar that also has that step slightly askew. Not as bad though.
I agree, it's sloppy.

I received my SR1 yesterday. No blade play, but the lockbar is just plain ugly. I know we cannot expect perfection at this price point, but...
I gave the SR1 another chance and bought the tanto version. The whole lock bar on mine is off center and even rubs the one side a bit. It’s sucks that the QC is so sloppy, but I liked the knife enough to just deal with it. There is really no substitute on the market for this type of knife in this price range so I have to give Cold Steel a little leeway, I suppose.

I'd like to add that my Broken Skull has vertical play. Does anyone else?

Edit: about a week later, the play disappeared. Must have needed to be broken in a bit.

My Broken Skull is perfect. My Recon 1s also were perfect.
What is the issue with the SRK? I might want to buy one of the new CPM 3V versions.

Yeah, I have some other CS knives where the step is crooked, but they were much cheaper and not as off as this SR1. I'm returning mine as well. :(

This example had a gap on one side of the lock bar too, I was trying to figure out if that was normal.

I had a BS at one point, and it did not have any play issues.

I'm looking at a Cold Steel SR1 Clip Point in S35VN. Does anybody know if the vertical play and QC issues have been addressed. This is a new knife from a dealer. Sorry to post in an old thread, but my questions are very relevant here.

Thanks in advance!
