Cold Steel Success

really really wanted to get the espada Large....but can't justify a $250 knife with only aus 8. they really should use 154cm or vg10 for their higher end stuff.....

True and I agree. But to me it was worth the $150 I paid for it, but I did have to shop around months ago when I got it. I don't know what the various cost options on that item are at present.

Timeline:

1. People would complain about the price of the new steel.
2. People would ask why Lynn doesn't also offer a cheaper version in, let's say, Aus8!
3. People would post remembering the "good ole days" when CS used Aus8 and SK5!!!
It wouldn't need to be an either/or proposition, and anyway, CS are well aware of the huge market for their tough reliable beater folders. But I for one have already had a CS folder rebladed (from AUS8A to CPM-154) and that knife is now way more balanced, complete.
I'd be willing to bet good money that a Recon 1 with simple 154CM would sell, and sell well.

Itd be more successful among us knife nuts, but not necessarily with the average user. And I think they outnumber us

I'd like to see them offer some of the models in VG1 or something.

APF, right on, my feelings exactly. People would still moan if CS upped the anty and put out folders in say, 154cm or vg10. Because then they would complain about the price increase in addition to the myriad of other reasons they find to whine about the company. I would love to see them offer a steel upgrade in a few of their folders; i'd gladly pay $30 more for a vg10 Recon1 for example.

They would have to move the manufacturing back to Japan to use VG-10, all the models in SM III and VG-10 were made in Japan.

Also the old Recon 1, that's the 1st generation was made in Japan.

The prices would go up much more than you would think.

I agree , satin finsh ,CPM-154 selling for around $80 - $90 USD and I'd buy one.

People used to complain about how much the Voyagers in VG-1 and the SM III blades cost.

Agreed! (ecos made a similar point.)

Why would they want to change anything? They are wildly successful right now. Their business model works.

Though, I would buy their knives, if they held their prices, and, with each knife, they threw in a free Spyderco and sandwich. And a pony.

I think their marketing is quite shrewd, and they are very conscious of the bang for the buck factor because of the customer base they target. They are not exactly in the business of selling some slicers or gentlemen knives, so their current steel choice suits them just fine. Changing from marketing business model to some product oriented one would be one of the biggest mistakes they could ever do. It is like scraping successful business and starting anew from a scratch. In my personal opinion of course.

Yeah but think how much it would be appreciated by Americans if they started producing in the US again, and started using (for example) 154CM. I'd love to know how many Americans spurn a brand because it manufactures overseas. It must be more than a few.

Don't know, those cheap knives most people tend to buy outside of the forums are all made overseas and those manufacturers sell a ton of them.

Even when the Voyagers were made in Japan the price increase wasn't that much. I'd buy them, I think CS's base would as well.

As they say, actions speak louder than words. :o Nothing wrong with overseas production, but it's a little funny seeing how many folks complain about it...but aren't willing to pony up the extra cash to buy domestic. :p Lots of folks out there that walk the walk, but lots of hypocrites too.

The Voyagers were always made in Japan until they changed the steel to AUS-8A and moved them to Taiwan.

Some models just have to be made overseas due to the Steels used, VG-1 and VG-10 are 2 of them.

I would want a large Vaquero with nicely textured and sharp-looking G10 (not the unrefined super grippy stuff) and VG-10, also with a waved thumbramp and a thumbdisc. That would be awesome.
Those are are exactly the same changes I thought of once I got to know my tanto XL a little bit, aside from the VG-10 part. I'd prefer something like 154CM, but different strokes for different folks.

I can't figure out why they would offer such a beefy folder and not put a wave device on there. It's just dumb, IMO.
