Cold Steel Success

Don't know, those cheap knives most people tend to buy outside of the forums are all made overseas and those manufacturers sell a ton of them.
Yes they do. There are also a lot of Americans who refuse to buy anything that is not produced in the US. Buck is a brand that is popular with that crowd, if not only for that reason. And Buck manages to produce inexpensive knives with all types of steel - and in the US, too (and dare I say it, they offer a lifetime warranty as well).

I don't think upgrading the steel on Cold Steel's popular Tri-Ad folders is a good idea. I wouldn't buy one. I'd rather own a Spyderco at that price-point.

Buck is working on moving their manufacturing back to the US.

Yeah but think how much it would be appreciated by Americans if they started producing in the US again, and started using (for example) 154CM. I'd love to know how many Americans spurn a brand because it manufactures overseas. It must be more than a few.
i know i will never buy a knife not made in the usa. i had a few cheep asian knives one of which was a recon 1 with a triad lock and that thing was a hunk of garbage. just buy from U.S knife makers and there crap companies will catch on or die off..... easy enough. there are hundreds of us made knives that are very good and worth every penny

"The Voyagers were always made in Japan until they changed the steel to AUS-8A and moved them to Taiwan. "
-Confused because I know I had some early Voyagers in aus8-a that had Japan stamped on them.

True, but clearly not enough to get Cold Steel thinking.

And there are a lot of knife fans who think their marketing is a joke. And that their models can tend toward the silly.

But they still sell knives like donuts at a fat guy convention, and I can't blame them for going with an "if it ain't broke....don't fix it" business model. They change it, they lose their market. It would be economic suicide.

They would likely sell quite a few more knives if they upgraded the steel.

Yeah, their early models were AUS 8 before they changed to VG-1.

Also at one time all of their stainless models were made in Japan.

Change all Aus8a to 154cm or S30v and you have a perfect knife.
Get CEO to lose half his weight and lose the jackass marketing and you have a perfect company image

And again, what would that accomplish? Ol' Lynn and his nutty vids sell tons of knives. CS has a devoted following here, to say nothing of outside of the knife nut world.

Cold Steel turning themselves into Spyderco or Benchmade would be a disaster for CS. Because Spydeco and Benchmade already are Spyderco and Benchmade.

He needs to stop being an all rounder (pun intended :D) and be more focused.

I don't know what it is about CS knives.
All knife brands have that 1% dumbass percentage. CS's dumbass percentage have got to be the dumbest

All the jackass marketing (stabbing cars and the like) does, is put the dumbass percentage in a fantasy world to prove how "invincible" CS show their knives to be.

Seriously, with the utmost respect to the CS Forums, here and there you pick up stories like:
"I dropped my spartan 2 stories tip down on the concrete. The concrete chipped but not my spartan!" (Real post)

Personally, I have a lot respect for the knives, but none for the company and the CEO who runs it

I wouldnt buy them if they started making them in the US out of carbon fiber, titanium, M4, and M390 and only charged $1 for them.

Cold Steel and Lynn Thompson have successfully advertised themselves away from my money.

They would have to move the manufacturing back to Japan to use VG-10, all the models in SM III and VG-10 were made in Japan.

Also the old Recon 1, that's the 1st generation was made in Japan.

The prices would go up much more than you would think.
Wasn't it VG-1 that they used? Not to be confused with the 10. There's nothing magical about VG-10 anymore either way, they could just use something that's analogous to it like Acuto+ or Bohler N690 that they can actually get into Taiwan for manufacturing.

I'd own them both. Who's forcing you to choose? ;) Spyderco and Cold Steel are about as different as two brands can get, they are mutually exclusive. :D

See this is the problem somebody else pointed out earlier this thread. Just assuming they all switched to VG1 or even VG10 there will be knife nuts out there complaining about why they aren't using the new CPM S10,000V

What do most forumites think would happen if Cold Steel began using high end steels in it's folding line, like Kershaw, Spyderco etc? Do you think it would be successful? Eg, Espada XL in CPM M4 or Lawman in M390.

Their steel quality is much better then their handle design. A good knife begins with a good handle and cold steel likes to use the cheap rubber coated junk that is just right for blistering the user's hands.

True, although not nearly as devoted as their bashers.

They'd remain Cold Steel, very much so in fact, just with better steel.

There really isn't anything magical about any steel... Granted there have been quite a few changes in steel over the years, but for the most part, most people if they are honest with themselves, really won't notice a substantial diiference.
YMMV

Their folders have great ergo's. And their fixed blades are not designed for girlie hands, I agree. :D
