Cold Steel Vs. Strider

Here's an good idea for the new guy, search before posting.;) I bet this thread gets locked within an hour.

Here's a good idea for folks who've been around awhile... don't stomp on a new guy for asking an honest question. The search function here is not real great, frankly it blows hard, and you can't blame a fella for asking.

Giving the benefit of the doubt, I'll address a recurring theme -
Poster asks "What about this knife, why the heck is it so expensive, is it any good?"
I think these posts are a genuine attempt to discover info - and not using search says " I'm not internet/forum trained yet, help me out." A polite summary answer and link to how to search usually will do, and defuse the ones who really are trying to stir it up.

Thanks, you said it much better than I did. Not everyone is out to start a flame war, guys. Believe it or not, most folks don't give a rip about who's who, or who made what, or who they "stole" the design from, they just want a good knife at a fair price. Those of you that pounce on every "newbie" post for being a troll or pot-stirrer make me wonder about your own trollishness. Beleive it or not, some folks just want honest info before they make a $300 decision.

Really , I didn't want to ruffle anyone's feathers. I guess I could have asked my question better.

I think you asked your question in a very reasonable manner, don't let cliquey snobs BS or intimidate you. There are far more encouraging people around here, than there are paranoid jackasses.

I regret to say, I have no experience with either of those knives, so I can't offer an opinion. If you have the patience to wade through the personality cults that afflict CS and Strider (and other) knives, you can find solid information about them here. All I can offer is a caveat... if it sounds to good to be true, and costs a week's pay... well, you do the math. Have fun and keep your edges clean!

Hello,

Sorry I have been off for duty reasons. I just made a short visit on CS' website and ... I discovered that LT has deceided to enter the Warpath again!!!:o

No logical explaination can be searched for this. I guess it's a question of season's change  !!! Spring is known for eruptions!!!

This time, LY is attacknig Mick STRIDER. I remeber that several years ago he did the same with Ernie EMERSON. But this sort od agression stopped rather soon (law action against CS and LT himself, may be, may be not???).

Just like you, I make my choice for knives on what I see and handle. not on a knifemaker's past - real or supposed to be real.
A Special Forces' past or military past is rather often mentionned by makers. But it will NEVER make my decision of buying a knife or even change it.:D

So AGAIN, LT has started a sterile polemic :jerkit: . And it won't bring anything to anyone in the knives addicts' world.
May be it won't even deserve his compan.

Take care,

Bob
Good, point monsieur:thumbup: Now if you or any of your friends in France would be interested in decent quality, drama free knives at a fair price, then let me know.....I will be there in September......lol.;) I was unaware that Mr. Thompson was angry with anyone other than Mick....learn something new every day.

Here's another idea, read the posts written before yours, you might see that someone had already apologized to the new guy for jumping on him. FWIW, I've never had any problem with the search function, but then again, I took the time read up on how to use it.;)

Where did I do anything other than state a fact? Where did I attack or call the OP any names? I offered a word of advice and provided a link. What info have you provided?

Have fun reading the news, dude.;)

I'm sorry, I just didn't realize you are the coolest. I will now go read the news.
Dude. I see that you did apologize to the new guy so maybe I wasn't completely off base.

hello,

Thanks for the feed back. Glad to learn you'll be there in Sept. I'll be happy to spend some time at your booth - I guess you mean the SICAC Paris show?

I am always interested in new knives and also for good discussion. fair price - no drama - no nonsense : that what I like!!!

best,

Bob

hello,

Sorry that my posts have helped to develop and extend what you feel like a classical thread.

I have not been ther for long, so i should have given a look at previous threads going the same way.

CS knives have been among my very 1st buys, years ago. At this time the choice I mean in France was not large !!! Spyderco appeared later, much more later than CS in the french shops. And there was no web to learn and find infos.
Please not that FRANCE is not third world!!! even if my description of the past is not bright. ;)

So I don't completly understand what's going on in the Company's directing staff. I still have a sort of affective link to these knives. I have kept some and sold others.
Let's say that it is just economical liberalism.

Take care,

Bob

Bob, don't spend all your retirement pension in knives, remember your doctor ask you to go away from knives for some time...:D
JDM61, they would be plenty french forumites in Sicac willing to spend their euros on nice american customs, don't sell everything to bob !

And. . .

How does the CS tanto stack up?. Anybody bought one yet and batoned cordwood with it, cut open oil drums, and cut mortar out of an block wall?

I stated in another thread I doubted if the less expensive foreign manufacturer properly heat treated it for that kind of abuse. It think it is probably hard end to end and won't take it. Remains to be seen, tho.

Or search using a common search engine for results at bladeforums.com. That always works.

You don't have to tell me. With everything from Laguiole to Opinel to Douk-Douk to Fred Perrin, you've got enough variety you don't have to look overseas for knives.

I know it's more fun to look, though. :)

LOL......I haven't done any shows yet as I have not been forging for all that long. I will be a spectator at both Blade and the Paris show.......this year.:D My first shows will probably be the Florida Knifemakers Association show in October and the Gator Cutlery Club show in February of '08 in preparation for what I hope will be a run at my JS stamp at Blade '08. But i may bring a teaser from the October batch to Paris IF I can get it through Her Majesties Customs AND onto the Eurostar or the ferry. I will be entering the EU through London this time and staying in Dover for a few days before crossing the Channel.

Thanks for the welcome and the info! After the 40 some pages on cs vs strider I can see why people would get irritated by seeing the same thread posted. No hard feelings, like I said I'm new to this computer stuff. Besides I've been a bouncer and have done security for 15 years, I've been spit on, people try to fight me, constant insults, I've got pretty thick skin.

My post isn't quit the same though. I just want to know about the cs GI tanto. tirod3 is on the same page. Does anyone own the knife? Can an overseas , China made knife be worth even $30? Thanks again

There is nothing about being made in China that determines a knife's quality. THAT is up to the manufacturer or importer who specifies what level of materials, craftsmanship, and quality control he is willing to commission.

If Cold Steel says "build me a $30 knife" they will probably get their money's worth -- if not, it won't sell after initial sales lead to vocally disappointed customers.

Cold Steel has knives and swords also made overseas that command much higher prices, and some of them sell consistently, so the value relative to the overall knife market seems to be there.

Of course, this all must allow for certain fudge factors: many buyers are not as knowledgeable as we are, some are easily convinced by slick advertising, the knives may hold up long enough to generate some positive buzz, but begin to deteriorate badly after serious use.

What makes a knife worth $30 anyway? An elegant wallhanger, a light use kitchen knife, an EDC for a gentleman who no longer hunts squirrel on his way into town in the morning? I's easier if you know what you want a knife to do, then list the candidates in order of cost, and stop when you find one you like a lot but can still afford. :)
