Look at the overall length of the XL Espada: 16 3/4 inches. That's 9.25 inches worth of handle! I realize that the blade is 7.5" long, and all that steel has to go somewhere, but am I the only one that thinks this is bordering on the ridiculous? Baring legal reasons, what would be the practical reason for carrying this instead of a fixed blade with equal blade length. That way, you don't have that insane handle length.

Large handle so you can swing it two-handed???:D

You are not alone.

and then i almost passed out when i saw them MSRP prices..... sebenza prices for Aus8 steel and triad lock

Don't worry, they're unobtrusive:

At first thought, carrying a “pocket sword” as big and heavy as the Espada may seem impractical. However, after much experimentation, we have found this is not the case. Even the biggest model can be carried discreetly and unobtrusively in the front pocket of most pants and when clipped to the waistband and covered by a “bloused” shirt or sweater they totally disappear. Then in an emergency they can be drawn and opened in a single motion by snagging the patented thumb plate on the edge of a pocket.

I also like this:

Finally to make the handle as beautiful as it is effective and strong, we have mirror polished the dovetailed bolsters and attached glossy black G-10 handle scales using the latest high tech fasteners.

Um... screws?

I don't doubt the quality of these pieces; but if you're going to make a folder that takes two men and an ox to use, why bother pretending it's a practical tool?

They are ridiculously large, but they actually follow the Spanish navaja tradition, where very large folders of the same dimensions were not unheard of.

I'm sure they are, provided you weigh more than 400 lbs.

Simply because some people will believe it.

It's sick how that product description talks about the conquistadors as if they were good guys worthy of emulation. "Everlasting Fame and Glory"? Try villainy, phacktards. Maybe cold steel's admiration for them explains the company's business tactics and "product design" strategy.

riches, fame and glory are still to be won and available to the “well armed” in great abundance.
How, by burglarizing and mugging people?

I have a 6" Ti-Lite and at first I thought it would be a pain to carry, turned out not to be. I still dont carry it hardly at all as I figure cops would NOT like it. I would like to hold the Espada to see how really big it is. Its not practical and the advertising is over the top, but it would be interesting to play with.

We don’t believe any tactical folder can make a credible claim to being a “pocket sword”

Oh geez.

The question of why you would need to carry a "pocket sword" comes up.

Nobody needs most of what they own. They just want it! And, if you have a Concealed Weapons Permit here in my state you can legally try to hide a blade of this size on your person. Even if you don't have the CWP you can still carry it openly.

IMHO about 5 inches is the LARGEST a folder's blade should be. After that if you need that kind of length you need a fixed blade.

I admit that it might be cool as a novelty, but the price is just too high. Cold Steel's offerings can usually be had for about 60% of their MSRP from other online sources, but that's still around $270-280.:(

What!!! MSRP$469 for entry level steel?
To large edc, Or carry at all.:thumbdn:
I would rather get a byrd knife from spyderco for $25. 8cr13mov steel
is comparable to cs's aus 8a.At least you could use it and cary it.:)

What a bunch of sissies...You can't carry a folder with a 7.5" blade?? It doesn't have to go in your pocket...You could carry it inside your waistband.:).
