Cold Steel XL Espada: That's bleedin' HUGE!

I dunno i think itd be second only to Dork-Ops oh oh and its sister site Extreme Shock

Sites: http://www.extremeshockusa.com http://darkopsknives.com/

I keep trying to look at the knives on DorkOps' site, but that nasty lookin' operator dude staring at me through that green 'tactical' smoke just scares the bejeebers out of me. I can't get past him before I get all intimidated and my mall-ninja-like reflexes take over and I click over to the CS site. Maybe what I need is a CS Conquistador knife, after all! :D

thx - cpr

What!!! MSRP$469 for entry level steel?
To large edc, Or carry at all.:thumbdn:
I would rather get a byrd knife from spyderco for $25. 8cr13mov steel
is comparable to cs's aus 8a.At least you could use it and cary it.:)

Welcome to Cold steel! :D

$500 for a knife any other high end manufacturer would sell for $200....O WAIT! CS DOESN"T MAKE THEIR OWN KNIVES! They cost more because, as a re-seller, they have to mark them up to make a profit! :D

Price, materials, and advertising aside; I'd be worried about blade and pivot integrity at that length. That's a hell of a lot of torque.

The 7.5" Espada has a very very strong lock. When I worked on the design I was very worried about lock failure. Tests on my custom samples went very well. The lock held 475lbs 4" from pivot this equals 1900 pound inchs of torque. The knife was 99% unaffected by this. I then racked it to 500lbs, this broke the blade. The handle and all parts were still in good working order. I should mention the handle was .250 g-10 (no liners) and 440c blade 59Rc. (The production materials are different but exact same design)

I don 't care what anyone says. I want the 7.5" Espada! :D

I love big blades.

Nice design work, Andrew!

The Tri-Ad lock cetrainly looks and sounds very stout. I'm looking forward to trying it out on the American Lawman when it's available.

thanks Brian, BTW we tested the Rajah II yesterday (production sample). It was used for chopping, heavey spin wacks, over striking and hanging weight. We went to 350lbs. The knife was removed from the rack, and accept for a scuffed blade the kukri was 100% perfect no blade play at all. It could have been cleaned and re-boxed and sold as new. I'm gonna keep it for more:) chopping fun

Wish I could show you my 5"blade, Voyager EDC. It's worn and scarred and beginning to take on that look of a trusted, used tool. And it stays hell for sharp. I've thought about the XX2 Voyager.

I've become used to a larger folder and am pretty handy with one with few cuts and no stitches,,,,yet!

But people almost pass out when I uncork the five incher.... Today I carried IWB. Most of the time it's in my strong side front pocket or the hip pocket.

I have many knives of different configurations and EDC a Skeletool. Still I keep coming back to this beat up Voyager like an old friend. If push came to shove.... I'd ditch the multi- and go with the CS.

So y'all can Dis CS all you want... But know this.... There are a hell of a lot of us out here that carry working knives and they sure aren't $500 purdy Mall Monkey nail cleaners.

Just sharing with ya......:)

If you look at old threads, you'll actually find that quite a few members on these forums think the Voyager line as well as some of the other designs are very good for the prices. The majority of the problems some of the people have with CS is with the advertising and the arguably over inflated prices on their high end knives.

A lot of CS's claims tend to give the impression that their knives are better than everyone out there, but they simply aren't. That's not to say that they're not good or great deals. In terms of actual durability and practicality, which is the point of your statement, CS has serious competition.

And to Mr Demko:

I'm glad to see another designer on these forums. I'm very intrigued by the Tri-Ad lock. Do you have any links to anything that shows how it compares to a normal Lock Back? I'm having a little difficulty understanding how it really compares.

http://www.coldsteel.com/espada.html

Look at the overall length of the XL Espada: 16 3/4 inches. That's 9.25 inches worth of handle! I realize that the blade is 7.5" long, and all that steel has to go somewhere, but am I the only one that thinks this is bordering on the ridiculous? Baring legal reasons, what would be the practical reason for carrying this instead of a fixed blade with equal blade length. That way, you don't have that insane handle length.

You're asking this about a Cold Steel product? And you sound surprised. I mean... Really? :D

Kaizen1, Sorry I only have video of tests, However the new CS catalog has some nice renderings and photos of the lock. If you know , very well, how a standard lockback works (notch and rocker angles, corner lockup, etc..) and how they fail, then you should see the advantages of the new design.

well all i know is that the 7 inch version is sweet and im gonna get one, just not for the mrsp price of course haha. and i would love to see a company like emerson or benchmade etc.. make a vid like cs does to show their knives off but they dont. just my 2 cents. :P

I have to admit, for the really large production folders, CS doesn't have much competition.

(edits mine) Maybe the same guy runs both? Or they use the same marketing outfit? I think it's just as entertaining. The concept and product quality seem to be very good, but the "let's cater to all the wannabe operators out there" marketing plan is a real turn off. A turn off, that is, when I'm not laughing. ;)

So many of these businesses (CS, DO, ES) have decent products, it's the way they're presented that's so silly; almost like they use the advertising to justify the high prices? From DemkoKnives' post, it sounds like a lot of time and effort went into the development of the Espada - as I'm sure much time and development went into ES ammo as well (as for Dork Ops, mostly they just copy Extrema Ratio) but to advertise it the way CS does, and ask the price that they are, is just ridiculous, IMO.

thx - cpr

yeah the prices on the dork ops knives is pretty high (but you gotta admit some come with alot of features; punch pins, bottle openers, back saws etc)
alwilliam was prolly preferred customer to some of those sites:-D

As for extreme shock, the ammo claims are legit, theyve got frangible ammo which is serious stuff. If i were say a body guard id buy some of that stuff cause thats a guaranteed one shot kill on the torso.

In fact a few years ago there was an article about a former seal PMC over in Iraq using frangible 5.56 nato rounds who shot a terrorist in the ass and killed the guy- one shot, totally obliterated the lower GI tract if you google it you can prolly find it
