Cold Steel?

Cold Steel Rocks I must concede their products have quality written all over them.

I'm hearing that Cold Steel is ripping off people's designs all the time- which ones?
They copied the Wave, as well as the Okapi and Douk-Douk. They do give credit to the Douk-Douk, and mention the Okapi, but not by name.
What have they ripped off?

They take classic designs and put their own twists to them. Knives have been made for thousands of years so except for some of the space age looking stuff not much out there is original period.

Last I heard you couldn't patent or copyright a knife shape. That's a good thing. So what if they reproduce a compelling design? It comes down to making a good knife, which I think has kept them in business for a good long while now.

I love Cold steel... Lynn Thompson might be an @$$hole but his company makes some damn fine products.
I own and EDC a CS Voyager 5 in (Clip-Point). I have used this sucker in some pretty adverse situations and I have tested it to the Max as well. I have used it to Chop, Cut, Slash, Saw, Pry, even hammer and the VG-1 Blade rarely even gets dull. I swear you could shave the Hulk's Back with that thing.
I wanted a slightly smaller knife, so a friend of mine suggested Spyderco. I bought the Atlantic Salt and Just didn't like it. It had some odd blade play and scratched easily. Traded it for a Spyderco Police SS PE... Had to tighten the pin 4 times, had to engrave the sides for some sort of grip and I chipped the blade when I bumped it on something.
I bought the Tenacious to try out the Full Flat grind and the Full Serrations, It a good little knife, even though its made in China, but its small.
I have gone back to carrying My Voyager.

As far as flicking them open... The Spydercos always end up backwards in my hand or sideways at best. My cold steel I can Grip with my Thumb and Palm and sling open with lightning speed, Right into a solid grip.

I also own a CS Brooklyn Smasher which is Indestructible!
I own the CS Two handed machete... Brutal!
And I own the CS Battle-Mace... Undoubtedly one of the most brutal weapons ever made to be held in a hand. I used to work in a furniture store and we had to destroy furniture with slight defects... I have used that thing to smash Dressers into splinters, Entertainment Centers to Toothpicks... ETC. Absolutely Brutal.

In My Opinion CS is for Hard Use, Spyderco is for Fancy.

Tomahawk23,

That is some nice spider-web engraving on your Police model. Did you do that yourself? If so, great job!

As far as what you said about "Spyderco is for fancy," I think Sal Glesser (Spyderco's Founder and President) would get a kick out of that.:D I've heard of Spydercos being called "fugly," but never "fancy." When I think "fancy," I think CRK or William Henry.

I don't really have a problem with that. That's not copying. Which is better- a Sisu, or a Helle? I'll let you decide, but have no problem with bo companys producing them.

Spyderco has a patent on the Spyderhole, don't they?
The wave?
That little hump or hook you see on Emerson and Spyderco blades. It is designed to catch your pocket with a tip-up knife.

I heard that they copied one of Strider's designs. I think it was one of their tantos, either the kobun or the GI. I don't really have a problem with this- Mick has done far worse.
I also found out that they copied [sp] Grohhman, with their Canadian Belt Knife. No excuse, but I think this is a fairly traditional knife, and I don't think CS is intruding onto Grohhman's territory (they are different knives in terms of quality.)
I own a CS poleaxe, that's all. They have some stuff, including knives, that I would like to own.

I just purchased one of their folding Bushmans for less than $25.00

This has got to be one of the best all around beaters I have ever seen. Blade quality feels just adequate It doesn't feel like the premium steels. This lock design is something I really like and is the reason I took interest, it does take getting used to but it's not a problem for me at all. I do not need to close a knife quickly with one hand (I just am not into the cool assassin/ninja look) so two hand closing is a non issue for me but I do like to ability to open it quickly which leads to issue below.

My gripe I am a person that likes a good stiff action in a one hand opener but this thing is a thumb killer garranteed to give you a sore thumb after opening it a few times. If you have dainty fingers, long nails you best use two hands to open it. Maybe something longer instead of round thumb studs would work better on this thing.

I do like Cold Steel and I am still impressed with this very very tough workers type knife.

Oh there is nothing unique, propietary, or new about using fold over stainless to construct a knife.

About the Salt, you know it's H1, right? That's why it scratches. If you didn't know that you didn't do your homework. If it had "odd blade play", my first reaction is to ask "what did you do to it". I shouldn't say that but I'll ask if you knew if you could send it in to get it fixed? Did you trade it in to a dealer so somebody else will get an unsafe product? Any moral pangs of regret from doing that?

As far as tightening the police model "pin" 4 times, how are you doing that, and why? Once again I say what did you do to it to damage it? How are you fixing these pins?

I've got a police over 15 years old and the pins are as they came. It's been sharpened down to a nub, looks like hell, and now has some play but never had any problem with pins. Sometimes I have trouble believeing what you write here.

If you didn't like the grip or feel of the knife, why the heck did you buy it? There are spyderco's with better grips, and certainly ones meant for harder use than the Police. Comparing that, or the salt model to a 5 inch bladed voyager is kind of silly too.

I have plenty of cold steel products so don't think I'm putting them down. I just question your train of logic, honesty, and your maturity. Have fun with your battle mace and "Brooklyn smasher", I'll keep my ZDP 189 Endura while wondering what the heck a brooklyn smashers purpose is?.

BTW, VG1 is an excellent steel in my experience. Different from VG10, but not worse, or of lower quality at all. I have several VG1 cold steel products and have started to like them better than the same products in AUS8A. That's a compliment as IMO Cold steel did/does AUS8 extremely well. The only problems I ever had were the extremely sharp out of the box, but very fragile serrations on my voyagers ( including the 5,6, and 7 inch bladed knives). The cold steel lock back knives are excellent typically. The lock designer is the same engineer Spyderco used, and referred to Lynn Thompson by Sal Glessar. Joe

Cold Steel make some knives I like very much, some I think are okay, and some that I don't like at all. I have no experience with the Natchez bowie, but I do have experience with the Laredo bowie, and I like it a lot. The one I'm familiar with has a Carbon V blade, not San Mai or SK-5.

Eh, you might get some interesting responses, but the general consensus on Bladeforums is:

Cold Steel= Cold Steal, mainly marketing towards the mall
706_angry_ninja_smiley_throwing_a_ninja_star.gif
crowd.

I don't really know why, maybe its the 7 inch folders, or maybe the throwing stars, or maybe plastic stabbing knives that can "be taped anywhere", I don't know.

Perhaps if Spyderco would style there fancy knives a bit less, they could make the same quality knives as Cold Steel.

I have no interest in the covert fgx and throwing stuff, but I like the large folders. The only thing that is keeing me away from an X2 Voyager is the fact that they charge premium steel prices for mid range steel

Don't have much experience with Cold Steel, but I must say that I really like their Pro Flight and Sure Flight Throwers:thumbup:. Super Super Tough, and I have beat the crap out of them, I learned to throw on them, so you would expect how much damage they have taken, as well as hitting each other a lot of times. I also like their gimmicky products like the Sjambok(which I have..I mean for $15 why not), the throwing stars actually seem kinda cool, etc. Also their cheap line of machete/machete variants are very good quality for the price.

Nonsense. I think this thread shows that the feelings toward Cold Steel here are mixed. Some like them. Some hate them. Some like the knives but detest the owner and/or the advertising.
