Cold Steel?

It could also be ZDP-189. Or 420J2. ;)

To me the point is, if people are saying it is not as good as VG-10 ("half bad") , but they have not even owned one, then on what are they basing their opinion?

I would rather hear from an objective poster who has given one a test and says, "it did this", "and the known VG-10 did this".

Then we would know how they compare.

VG-1 is not VG-10 (VG-10 has Vanadium & Cobalt)

VG-1 is a higher carbon 440+ class between 440C and 154CM
All three are similar in composition, [different hardening].

VG-1 is actually very decent steel.

Thanks for that chart and info, 440hard. I just may take another look at CS VG-1 blades.

Since you're directing this at me, I'll reply. I've formulated my opinion of VG-1 based on reading literally dozens of reviews and user feedback on it, here and on other forums. I'm familiar with its composition and have used a steel that is nearly identical in its properties and performance, but I bet you wouldn't have a clue as to what steel that is.;)

I personally don't think anybody in this thread, including me, really cares what you would rather hear. If you want to find out about VG-1 vs. VG-10, performance wise, do some research. There have been several threads on VG-1, but quite obviously, you haven't read any of them. Instead, you'd rather criticize people, like me, who have and are willing to share that information here.

19C27 from Sandavik is the most similar steel to VG1 Joe

This is very pointedly directed at me. Ok, maybe I kicked up a Hornets nest.

What is going on here?. Most of the folks here have talked about Cold Steel knives they owned, most have said they think they are good value, others have had problems. Like bad customer service, which is something Cold Steel should fix. But they shared their experiences. Your “contribution” to this thread reads as spite. You don’t like Cold Steel or something?

Well I can’t speak for the whole thread, the whole forum, or the whole world, but I can tell you don’t want to hear about it.

But if I had a vote, I would say, add something constructive to the thread, or don’t let the door bump you on the way out. ;)

Well, today I recieved my second CS knive. A Recon Stout, this is one big ass knive, lol Again sharp as hell out of the box. I really like the two I've bought so far.

I own a Recon Scout in VG-1 San Mai, and I am very satisfied with it. I think owners of Cold Steel knives generally are a pretty satisified lot. The haters don't really seem to have much direct experience, and that says a whole lot IMO.

Let's look at the post trail here, smart guy. Usually, I talk all kinds of crud about Cold Steel, because personally, I don't like 'em. However, the one time I don't, and offer a helpful correction and some input on the blade steels mentioned, I get Slamfire's alter ego calling me spiteful.

I understand the CS Ultimate Hunter is now available in VG-10.

The UH is now available in VG-1, not VG-10.

Ok, Thanks on that.

No problem. From what I've read, VG-1 isn't half bad. However, VG-10 is even better.

Since Cold Steel is not telling anyone what VG-1 is, it could be VG-10.

Now that was a rather naive contribution to the thread (VG-1 is really VG-10:rolleyes:).

Well, luckily you don't, and I'm not going anywhere, Slamfire.;)

I always have a good laugh when I get the latest CS catalog. I like the recent cover with the blood on the table.

They make a sweet blowgun.

I had some old Carbon V blades that were decent. I won't buy their knives anymore. They rip off designs and the ones they come up with are ugly as hell.

I have a Reocn Tanto, Oyabun (7.5 blade) Kobun ex large (SE) Voyager and
a Walkabout cane. I like CS products. Marketing over the top, but they do
make tough knives. This all started after I "lost" my Endura SE.

3Guardsmen, the MBS26 is a very similar steel also. Sal G. has spoken very well of it and used it in the kitchen knife line. The Sandavik steel 19C27 is almost a clone with the only difference being it doesn't have a small amount of moly, and is a bit cleaner. They're good steels IMO.. Hit the "more info" link at the bottom and it will take you to the chart:http://www2.sandvik.com/sandvik/0140/internet/se01596.nsf/GenerateFrameset1?readForm&url=http://www2.sandvik.com/sandvik/0140/internet/se01596.nsf/(DocumentsInternetWeb)/FD090E0A4CC0C960C12568FF004F738A

Son of a gun, Joe! You were right on! 19C is virtually identical to VG-1. Even closer than MBS-26. Thank you for the info, Sir.

P.S. Have you tried any knives in 19C, like some of Canal St. Cutlery's stuff?

I don't have anything in 19C yet, just MBS-26 spyderco catcherman, and a VG-1 Voyager. These are all excellent steel makers with fine products known for clean steel with good grain structures. The VG series ( up to super gold powder steel used in Falkniven ( laminated with VG2), and Kershaw ( SG2 steel laminated in ?) is probably the more sophisticated line yet they all three found a need for that particular class of steel. It's no accident. Cold steel made a fine choice. Joe

Im a HUGE fan of CS. I have a number of their knives and have never been let down. Since summer is here I think Im gonna try using my tru-flight thrower as my primary camp knife, and Ill bet itll be great!. This thing is thick, carbon, and sharp as hell. I will certainly post any problems if they arise although for rough use I doubt they will. I have also used a number of thier 'non-knife' products with decent results. I bought (locally) a cane (walking stick... w/e I just had back surgery) and with the addition of a rubber tip on the bottom (that I found at the grocery store of all places for .99C) it worked great!

Anyway long stor(ies) short Cold Steel makes some awesome products. :)
