Cold Steel's San Mai a Rip-Off

I'll bet he holds up the tootsie pop and poses with it just like he does with a knife after he cuts rope or stabs a pig!

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves for holding two legendary warriors like Chuck Norris and Lynn Thompson in one thread!

Once again a litany of ignorance rears it's ugly head.

+ 1 definitely....

Not not to say CS is perfect because they aren't, there are somethings that could be improved, but they do make good user blades for the money.

And this comes from someone who EDC's Spyderco Military's.

Aesthetically, I can't think of any Cold Steel knife that I like the looks of (the American Lawman, is the only one that come close). For some reason, I just hate the Cold Steel designs... To each his own I suppose.

Joshua J.:

1. You got me all worked up thinking they put VG-1 back in the 2011 Voyagers. Shame on you.

Not so! I said: "The answer, unfortunately, is no, there's no difference in the heat treat. It's the same "subzero-quenched" stainless used in their old Voyagers...." Before using San Mai in their Voyagers, they used VG-1, and before that, AUS8. The San Mai Voyagers were canceled. CS's website states: "The new Voyagers and Gunsites have been CANCELLED (sic) because they did not meet our ... delivery schedule requirements. All backorders will be CANCELLED (sic) and the Voyagers will be reintroduced in Spring 2011. We will have more information on the 2011 Voyagers at a later date." -- Confed

Now I have nothing against VG-1. I think it's a great mid-level stainless steel that's easy to sharpen and is plenty tough as to not require 420 panels! But wait, I thought, maybe they heat treat the VG-1 steel to be harder and perhaps a bit more brittle. So I called the company and asked one of their tech people. The answer, unfortunately, is no, there's no difference in the heat treat. It's the same "subzero-quenched" stainless used in their old Voyagers and other knives. If they didn't need 420 panels, why do the new ones need them (at extra cost)? I'd like to buy some of the new Voyagers with the Tri-Ad locks, but I don't want to pay a premium for a mid-level grade steel that's a gimmick. .

This paragraph implies that the 2011 Voyagers use VG-1.

Joshua J.:

2. If the Cold Steel "tech" guy just said "sub zero quench" the same as everything else, chances are he isn't allowed to say any more, doesn't know any more, or assumed you don't know what the Rockwell scale is. According to the Takefu website, with the recommended heat treat VG-1 comes out one Rc harder than VG-10, so at least it's not average in every way.

I didn't say it was average. I just said it's not the same. I don't understand why you would presume to know what the tech guy at CS was thinking and what he knew and didn't know and what he was assuming my knowledge of the Rockwell scale was, nor do I know what your point is. My point is that VG-1 is a good stainless steel that's been used by CS to make blades that were 5- and 6-inches in length. These blades didn't show any signs of failing or needing soft steel panels, and it appears that the VG-1 used in Voyagers is exactly the same as that found in San Mai III, and that the heat treating is the same. This is the same steel that CS workers put in vices and bent in excess of 45 degrees. Why would such steel need panels? --Confed

Ok, that one is my fault. Sometimes my posts are a little disjointed.
The Cold Steel guy pretty much gave a non answer as far as how they actually heat treat their steel. He did answer your question as to whether or not they treat the steel differently when it is laminated, but my mind always drifts to specifics. I guess I got side tracked.

The more manufacturers, the more choice, the better. There is a good chance they turn up something worthwhile now and then.
As for CS San May III, yes it is a bit funny. So if you have figured it out, it will not work for you. But if you are oblivious of all that boring technical detail - it will make your knife a miraculous blade from fairy tale. Really good staff to impress your friends with. :D

Every time a brand specific thread pops up we get these posts attacking the brand, and then some defending it. How about some facts.

FACTS

-If you want a specialized LARGE or VERY LARGE folder with great mid-level materials and quality, and I dare someone to find folders that compete with the special use of rajah and spartan series, no, 6'' titlite? Then you buy a cold steel.
-If you want a high quality folder of small to medium size with great ergos and a high quality to premium steel, spyderco has your back.
-If you want high tech good looking knives with mostly premium steel and a wide variety of choices, great fit n finish, you get a benchmade.
-If you want an extremely lightweight folder with a sharp blade and very light weight for the size, you get an al mar.
-You want a real classic for not a lot of cost and decent materials and workmanship with a great warranty, go Buck.

And if you want a fixed blade, you buy a fixed blade from any of those companies and you'll be decently satisfied.
Not any of these companies can be knocked. All companies make awesome knives, and some not so awesome knives.

I refuse, to live in this word with the attitude that any of these knife companies are for "lesser knowing" knife people, Each has it's own unique designs and the fact that all of them exist individually means you can have any kind of folder you want, and if they don't have EXACTLY what you're looking for, than you make one or get one made, but either way, getting rid of any of those company's would hurt the great variety and style of the knife world.

i like the fact cold steel , tests thier knives for toughness, noone else does. i recently saw a video on youtube where fred perrin repeatly threw and stuck a cold steel lawman in a wall of wood 4x4s, try that with ur endura.

And where did you get the revelation that "noone [sic] else" tests their knives for toughness?

No mention of the company that not only puts out the best bang for your buck knives but has a warranty and customer service that puts the aforemention to shame ?

I speak of the MIGHTY Kershaw.:applouse: Put a JYDII in Ti in your hand and you will know what I mean , or a Blur , or switch over to the Zero Tolerance line for some of the most coveted production folders to ever be produced ! :encouragement:

Back to Cold Steel.... I like 'em :) My American Lawman and mini AL both are solid tools that I have total confidence in. That's my opinion though.... what do I know.
