Cold Steel's San Mai a Rip-Off

That's great news, and I'm astounded. Have you done corresponding tests of Cold Steel's AUS8? I've always been curious as to the differences between VG-1 and AUS8.

Given the performance of VG-1 in your tests, it still seems to hold its own without needing 420 slabs. (BTW, someone earlier said that it was 420J2. That's not true...420J2 isn't applied to the San Mai knives.)...

.

I've not tried Cold Steel AUS8. However, I have run comparisons between VG1 at 59HRC and AUS8 at 59HRC. The VG1 holds an edge noticeably better than AUS8.

his tests do not involve the lateral strength or corrosion resistance of the blade...

True enough. The reason for the lamination is to increase toughness and corrosion resistance, rather than to increase edge retention.

Like I said in post 19 on the first page of this thread. Cold Steel's purpose in using laminated steel was to produce a stainless blade that has the toughness and edge retention properties of the Carbon V blades. Laminated AUS8 should do that. So should laminated VG1, except that laminated VG1 will have superior edge retention to that of Carbon V or 1095.

Your actually putting CS and Spyderco in the same sentance with that? You really got to be kidding.:jerkit:

actually i didn't please read again... :jerkit:

someone in this thread addresses the marketing only company statement pretty well...

Public appology to ya Klok. I actually went back and re read this. Sorry!

It just actually floored me when I saw that.

no apologies needed. I just think the marketing company only line is a load of nonsense.

the spyderco remark was simply a device to turn that line around on the naysayers

No, I claimed that mall ninjas like Cold Steel. Read carefully, there's room in my wording for knowledgeable people who like Cold Steel. But if you were to take any given mall ninja, chances are that Cold Steel's products would appeal to them more than other brands. And that is the definition of flaming; reacting quickly without much care taken to read or think.

Two points:

Your statement was worded the way it was to get a response. No need to spin it now.

I would also submit that the spyderco warrior would appeal to mall ninjas more than any piece in the cs line up.....though none of them would have a clue what to do with it.

Most lines have pieces which appeal to mall ninjas. Kershaw is revered on here(as well they should be)....however, tell me some of their pieces aren't a little outlandish. Hell, my favorite little kershaw storm is straight up mall ninja alley!

You have no way of knowing what my intent was. And no, it wasn't intended to get a response. I don't see why anyone would try to provoke the... enlightening and uplifting responses you made. I didn't realize that some people would be so oversensitive. I've seen people post remarks about all other brands and not get the same response.

And yes, I, too, am a big fan of Kershaw's A/O's. If someone posted that they're too mall ninja (and people have), I wouldn't (and haven't) dispute that, much less derail the thread with sniping comments. All I can say is that I like its features. Now are you going to keep arguing over who's right and who's wrong, or are you going to actually give some specific reasons why you like Cold Steel products?

Well, apparently you didn't read my original response in this thread, where I said specifically what I what I like about cold steel. I'll even add to it and state that my American lawman is built like a tank, locks up tighter than ft Knox, and gets and keeps a really nice edge (their aus8 is highly underrated on here). Moreover, I will even go so far as to say that their bushman is one of the best values in field/camping knives, period.

I apologize if you feel I misread the tone of your post; though having reread it several times, I fail to see how it could be considered anything other than inflammatory.

There probably ARE factories that actually have a the brand name fixed on their entrance, however, many knife companies have their knives produced by external manufacturers. I read somewhere that ESEE employs three (3) people. They certainly don't make their knives themselves.
Does that take anything away from the quality of their knives?
Spyderco has many (if not most) of their knives produced by outside sources.
Does that take anything away from the quality of their knives?
Kershaw?
I'm sure there are others, more than companies that manufacture all their knives themselves.

But no one ever rags on those companies, or any other. There is a special hatred reserved for Cold Steel, and there is nothing rational about it.

And this is exactly why CS makes a San Mai, to get the best of all the requirements of a knife combined in one piece. The general rules being:

Carbon steel- great edge retention and sharpening, lousy corrosion resistance.
High Carbon Stainless- better corrosion resistance, good edge retention.
Low Carbon Stainless- extremely tough, great corrosion resistance, no edge retention.

San Mai III- Best of all requirements.

I don't see where the "rip off" part comes in. It does exactly as advertised, and such combinations come at a price.

Honestly - the sharpest factory knife I have ever had - a cold steel Konjo in San Mai III VG 1. I got it at a really marked down price three years ago, and the thing has never been sharpened - just stropped. It came to me, literally, as sharp as a straight razor. I don't know how or why it's that sharp - but you clearly can't knock the steel.

I have 2 CS knives (folders) large Voyager in VG-1 and a new Recon-1 in AUS8 and I dig them both. Two, 4 inch long blade scalpel sharp knives at a cheap price and solid as a rock.

I like Cold steel too. They help Spyderco & Benchmade eat up much of my disposable income & I'm getting at least 3 items from their 2011 lineup despite that damned bead-blasted finish.

I've owned many of their products & have never been disappointed. I sent a Recon 1 & an old El Hombre folder to Crapistan with my brother. I could take or leave their marketing but it seems to work for them. The heat they take on this forum baffles me & seems to bear no relation to the products I've owned & used for years. To each his own, but I like to keep it positive & vote mostly with my cash.

I used my Cold Steel Recon Scout to cut a cupcake this morning!
And I liked it!!! :D
