Cold weather Q&A

You southern guys better show up on this! Contemplating, but not sure if I'll be able to pull this off, given that its not supposed to get much over 28f for the next couple of weeks. Maybe if the snow tomorrow dumps 8-10" instead of the 1" in the forecast.

I like this idea and everything but here is my opinion on it. i dont mean any disrespect and for the people that live in the country this is plenty a great idea except im not sure if the contest is for camera men or survivalist, please understand i mean no disrespect i just wanted to explain how i feel on this.

i live in the city, and i would have to drive a few hours to get to a place where i could do this. i have no problem with 48 hours with less than what is listed. i do these type courses 4 times a year at a minimal anyway but by the time i bought some of the required stuff and paid for the area for the (course) and drove 2-3 hours out there and then spend the entire 48 hours in the cold it would be a shame to not win just because im not as good a camera man.

I think this would be awesome if it was something like the person who stays out the longest or takes the least amount of gear or something but the person with the best/most pictures makes it hard for me to want to join in on this one. the prize is fantastic but there are members who can pop a lean to up in there backyard and go outside every 2 hours to take a picture with there badass expensive camera and then go back inside in the warmth, and i would probably loose to them after spending about 100 bucks on equipment and location and really suriving with the minimum listed.

As far as the person who posted thats upset with the contest, i feel that its quite irresponsible, even stupid to not prepare yourself for times outside during every season. No one has to participate that doesnt want to. but everyone should be a prepared for outdoor cold weather. Times like these are smart and a great learning experience and if something goes wrong you can always call it quits and all you loose is a few knives in a competition. And in this case you could have emergency gear ready for you and everything but in a real life emergency you wont be able to prepare as well in advance.

I live in SoCal so this challenge would not be as difficult for me as it might be for others ;)

I was talking to Tradewater about that last night. How hilarious if someone did this on the beach, nice sunny weather, turn that emergency blanket into a sun reflector for a nice tan. Hilarious.

Wish I could come out there and team up with you. It was 3 degrees here last night. Windows in my truck wont roll down, frozen tight.

HAha that would be funny. Don't we have a few Hawaii Beckerheads?

For good reason. A contest like this in the middle of winter is extremely irresponsible. You're assuming that the people attempting this know what they're doing. You may have gotten yourself off legally with your little disclaimer but will you be able to sleep at night if someone dies attempting this?

My advice to everyone is to skip this and wait for the next contest. Your life isn't worth a few knives.

Some of us aren't scared.

I would have drowned had I tried this last night.

Well said. That said, I live by big boy rules. If a person wants to give it a go, then there is an opportunity, pass or fail, for a reward for their efforts. I'm not forcing anyone to attempt this, just offering a reward for someone that does.

If someone dies, will I sleep well? Of course I will. Anyone that attempts this contest, without a backup plan, or security net, deserves what they get, simple as that.

Guys like Rick Marchand, spend time outdoors in this weather, wearing a capote, and toting a knife, in minus degree weather. But he's Canadian, so.......

Simple fact, if someone isn't comfortable taking the challenge, then they shouldn't. You're looking at roughly $150 worth of prizes for 24hrs of camping without a few luxuries, that's $6.25 an hour, so, if someone just HAS to have these knives, $6.25 an hour is all they gotta come up with to get them........

Irresponsible? Yeah, right. My advice to everyone is to skip this contest and wait until we do one that's much, much easier.

Oh, I reduced the time out, from 48 to 24hrs. Figure I'll get more participants that way.......

Hmm 24 takes it to maybe instead of no f$@king way.

Yeah, I got to thinking about my current work/sleep/kids/dinner situation, and figured if I actually got a chance to spend a day in the woods, I'm there. I love being out this time of year, the trout are biting, snow is falling, the woods are quiet, and fires are as close to you as those you love.

26 degrees with a very light dusting of snow. The high winds that we had the last couple of days are gone now, so building a fire isn't big of a challenge as it was. All in all, not that bad around here right now as long as you get a nice fire going. Might go out and get one going if the firewood isn't all iced over. We've got plenty of ice in places, just not much snow.

Hmmm...24 might be doable. Wife thinks its nuts still.
