Collecting handmade knives w/ critique, agendas, why? and some truths...

Looking forward to being back at Blade this year. I owe you more than on beer, Joe.

Some people are not employable and have skill sets that lend themselves to making knives....maybe they got bored using pen kits to turn out pens? I don't know.

You want an example? Sure I'll give you a good one. How about the "makers" that use pre-made blades and kits to make their "handmade" knives. I've seen it 3 times at a major gun show, and heard about 3 different "makers" doing it here on the forums. Why take something that is clearly (ONLY to someone with experience) not handmade, slap handles on it, and call it handmade if not for the money?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I get that, we all know about those guys. They only last a short while and we can tell immediately who they are. I didn't think they were having a very big effect on things in the big picture. Strictly small time chiselers. Are they making any money? I thought they were doing it for all the "fame and glory" :D:D

We don't know what effect it has on the collector. If I was just getting into collecting now, and purchased what I "thought" was a handmade knife for $350.00 or so, and it turned out to be a kit knife....not sure how I deep I would go into handmades.

STeven ,

Very well said .

Your straight forward honesty is sometimes a little abrasive for sure. But it is one of you better traits. No one has to worry about you sticking them in the back.

Don't let Steven's gruff exterior fool you, he is a sweet cream puff.

I don't get on the forum as much as I used to.

So, I am somewhat disturbed to hear that he is two timing me with Paranee.

Maybe you can win him back at Blade :)

Not sure ever been called a cream puff before, Peter....but there is a first time for everything.:p

You just were not willing to commit to the Left Coast Lifestyle, and Joseph was ready, so....there you have it.:D

Coming to Blade? Roger is bringing a special guest this year.

Great thread STeven, thanks for taking the time to write it up! Excellent information from all of the other participants in the discussion as well...I ALWAYS learn something new from posts like this and it's greatly appreciated. It's always an eye opener and a real pleasure to get a glimpse into the minds of the those who populate this forum. I'll be rereading this one a few more times just to absorb as much as I can and try to catch anything I may have missed the first time around. It's EXACTLY this kind of discussion(and of course all the knife porn:D) that make this place such a valuable resource for makers and collectors alike. Seriously guys, thanks for the insight!:thumbup:

Thanks, Joseph....You always say nice things to people, but I know this is from the heart. It means a lot to me.

This would be a good time for us to tell the world that we are leaving our significant others, moving to San Francisco, and getting married.

Paul Long is going to become a minister and do us the honor of officiating our nuptials.

Joe Paranee and Steven Garsson are gay knife dudes and in love.:love_heart:

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I love you guys.

;)

Well thought-out, STeven. lots of excellent, truly poignant observations.

This is an important and useful thread. STeven's 'essay' at the top represents a quality distillation from a man with inexhaustible integrity and a genuine altruistic spirit. Considering that along with the many thoughtful responses herein, I was moved to click on the 'rate this thread' button at the top and selected the 5 star 'Excellent' option.
