pardon the pun.

but whats the point, you can`t take thme out of the house, if you caught carrying any thing with a blade longer than 3", you`l go down for six years.

I see all of the lovely knife for sale and am very tempted.:D

but why buy and have it sit on a shelf or in a draw forever.

what do other UK collector do.

regards.

John.

Well, I don't live in the UK (though I'd like to for a while at some point), but I can tell you what I'd do. Rather than focusing on all of the knives that are prohibited, you could simply collect those that you are allowed to carry. It might be a bit tougher, but you could certainly still have a nice useable collection. :)

the only thing you are allowed to carry is an fold-able under 3" non-lockable knife.

I use to buy that type from a newsagents when i was a kid, the ones on the sheet of cardboard held on with elastic-bands.

even when hunting?

I feel for you. UK citizens don't have it very good when it comes to knives (or firearms). I think some of the knife manufacturers are trying to cater to individuals in the UK who want to collect and carry knives, but knife choices are rather limited.

I'm afraid I can't help any, but I do understand your frustration. Perhaps if enough of you Brits complain loud enough, the rules in the UK could eventually change. In the mean time... grab a Swiss Army knife and enjoy it.

IIRC you can carry one longer than 3" and lockable ONLY if you have a good reason to do so (the agent and court will decide if it was a good reason). I'm not an expert on the UK knife law but It must be a pain for knifenuts.

Yes, but that still leaves you with quite a few options. As I said, your selection will be narrower, but there are still plenty of knives that you can collect and carry.

Take a look at the Traditional Knife sub-forum sometime for some ideas. There is a whole world of beauitful knives out there that are non-locking and under 3 inches.

I feel bad for our British brothers and sisters.

Are you serious though ? Just caught carrying a large knife can land you six years ??
That is insanity.

I was wondering in countries that does not allow their "law-abiding" citizens to carry/own knives that are over 3 inches or own firearms if their crime rate is low?

I feel for you Tinderbox (UK).

Move to the US. ;)

Dang - I didn't realize it was that bad over there. I guess you could collect SAK's :(

A great start would be the Spyderco UK Pen Knife, designed specifically for, well, the UK market.

Some others to initially check out might be the CRKT Edgie, Case one-hand openers, Boker Cinch one-hand openers, some of the William Henry pieces, the traditional Japanese Higo no kami folders, the non-locking Opinels, the Okapis, as well as the huge number of traditional slip-joints.

Sweet! Now I have a good excuse for my mom when she asks me to move to England to be closer to her...LOL

Perhaps you could collect antique straight razors?

I used to be able to buy decent quality (non-collectable) used razors for between $5 and $15 each. They work great for cutting leather, make outstanding craft knives, and they virtually disappear in your front pocket. A bit flimsy for heavy work, but you CAN cut through wood or rigid plastic with a razor -- it'll snap chunks out of the edge, but at that price you won't cry about it.

I think i am going to have a look at the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife range.

I think the majority of them comply with UK, knife law.

The primary use is going to be for cutting, so i am going to limit the range of other function.

Can you tighten the blades when they become slack, I usually only buy fixed blades or folders that can be tightened.

any suggestion will be appriciated.

thanks.

John.
