Collecting Knife In The Uk, Pointless.

Well i've been illegally carrying a 3 inch locking bladefor some time now. The way i see it is with collecting in the U.K. is that you can carry what you want, but you have to have a good reason for it. Wearing a seven inch bowie knife to go to tesco's is obviously not bright, but wear the same knife when taking your dog for a walk in the woods, would probably be fine. I would say discretion and the way you conduct yourself in public would go a long way if you were to find yourself explaining to the law why you are carrying.

My advice....collect what you want, but think smart about carrying, also there is pleasure to be had in owning a really nice knife without actually using it, for me with some blades just holding it and admiring the workmanship is a good reason for owning it.

In Belgium there's no restriction on blade seize.
Balisongs, automatics and trowers are forbidden.
The rest are legal, but if you want to carry it, you must have a legal reason.

So in real life nobody carries knives.

I was in the woods and carried an opinel, next I went to a supermarket in the city and I noticed I had forgotten to leave the knife in the car.
I didn't feel at ease and I think thats very sad :(

...if you caught carrying any thing with a blade longer than 3"

For EDC you are right in saying that it has to be a sub-3" slipjoint.

However, if you have a good reason, you may carry anything you need. Hiking, deerstalking, camping, hunting: Go for it!

you`l go down for six years

"Yet among more than 11,000 people arrested in the past five years for illegally possessing a sharp or bladed weapon in public, 67 per cent were let off with a caution; 19 per cent were fined; and only 14 per cent were jailed. Of 362 people caught carrying a blade at school during the same period, 71 per cent were merely cautioned."

I think i am going to have a look at the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife range.

I think the majority of them comply with UK, knife law.

The primary use is going to be for cutting, so i am going to limit the range of other function.

Can you tighten the blades when they become slack, I usually only buy fixed blades or folders that can be tightened.

any suggestion will be appriciated.

thanks.

John.

Did you take a look at any of the knives in my post? They should all be compliant and are all good knives (some "better" than others). I highly recommend that you take a look at the first one I mentioned - the Spyderco UK Pen Knife, to start off with.

I have a nice Boda and a Leatherman e304x, and numerous other folder but they are all lock-knives.

I just ordred an Victorinox Spartan.

this is about all you can get away with in the UK.

Padawan, I had a look at the "Spyderco UK Pen Knife" a ver nice knife, but a bit out of my price-range at the moment.

regards.

John.

Wow, 6 years!

Well, at least you can carry a knife. Here in Norway we aren't allowed to carry any sharp object of any length in a public place. The maximum penalty for doing so is only 6 months though so I'm taking my chances ;)

Pretty soon you'll have to line up to get a mircro-chip implanted so they can track every move you make. Brits are the most spyed on people in the woeld and it is getting worse. I loved when I was over there on business, great people. I thought about trying to tranfer there, but the rules, regs and big brother really bother me.

1984 appears to have only been off by a little over a decade.

Cheers,
tjg

Here in Czech Republic we don't have any restrictions concerning knives :p :p :p

(different story with guns but this is bladeforums, isn't it? :))

The Bad guys in the USA don't bother much with knives as the Auto Pistol is their weapon of choice! I can assume your gun control laws are working fine in the UK otherwise why carry a large knife? A hammer can do a lot of damage so, have they outlawed hammers yet in the UK? If not EDC a stout hammer! Nobody will bother you much when they see that sucker!

The level of your ignorance is astounding.

ummm.......i arrest bad guys with knives all the time. alot of bad guys carry guns, granted, but almost all carry some sort of knife/shank/shiv. jailed bad guys have told me its because they can use it discreetly then discard without concern.
and i dont mean to hijack this thread and start a discussion about knife laws and how they are enforced.

How is anyone to feel safe without any protection? Surely the criminals who intend to mug, rape, or murder you are carrying whatever weapon they choose. If they were concerned with obeying laws, they would not be interested in mugging, raping, or murdering you. So what is a person being attacked to do in the UK? Yell, "stop or i'll say stop again!" or do they hope that some silly bobby with a baton fumbles on to the scene.

yes, the eternal debate on weapons control.

OOOOH a Gold Member so I better watch my step here. I don't know how it is where you live but, auto pistols are the carry standard for the bad guys here! Maybe you live in OZ...hahahaha.

This is why I live in fear that my company will transfer me to the UK. What a suckfest. I happened to be in London a little over 10 years ago during one of their "amnesty" things, where they encourage people to come and turn in their blades to the police. It was one of the most disgusting, and saddest things I've ever seen. And people were actually doing it. Handing in their knives I mean. No way I'd ever do that if similar legislation passes here (God forbid!)

If I lived there I would carry a Spyderco UK pen knife or one of the new Spyderco magnetic-psuedo locking numbers (I think those are supposed to be UK legal too). I would collect traditional slipjoints, and I would be miserable. No guns either!

Howdy all,

This is very interesting.
In what other ways do our british counterparts have stricter laws/ regulations?

I heard a british fellow say "every time I come to the US, I feel like I'm back in school." Referring, I think, to all the new smoking laws, drinking laws etc. and all the other countless ways we're losing personal freedom.

I guess I had the impression that the US was more regulated in this way (socially) although we have more economic freedom. Not so?

a blanket comparison is difficult. some states have very strict gun/knife laws, others have almost no restrictions re legal purchase/possession/carry.

seems the uk is more open when it comes to alcohol, sexuality, but strict on weapons.
