Collectorknives.net #85 SFO?

Yes, it is a minor issue and certainly not worth sending the knife back as some have wanted to do or as some have done on other knives based on this frame and blade combination. As Trand says; the slight dent/ding will disappear with a few sharpenings. These appear to be nice knives. Enjoy the knife overall and don't fret over a minor detail such as the easily corrected blade edge/center pin contact point.

If you send it back to GEC, I'd imagine they would just sharpen the blade down far enough for it to miss.

In that case I'm probably better off just resharpening the blade. I just don't have any experience re-profiling blades. I've only ever sharpened my knives on a medium/superfine stone that I've had for over 30 years.

Burnside, that isn't uncommon with the #85s. Its caused by letting the blade snap shut on its own as it hits the back spring. You can sharpen it out, GEC would do the same. I've adjusted to closing the main blade on my user #85s all the way rather than letting it snap. I also added some paper to the hump in the back spring as padding in case I forget and let it fly. I saw others recommend a paper matchstick in the past and it works quite well too.

Thanks for the pointers, 2Dead! I will definitely look into the paper matchstick trick, and closing the blade manually all the way.

Me too. My expectations were greatly exceeded. I didn't even care that much for this pattern in its standard form, but I was pretty well blown away when I got these SFO's. Very, very nice.

Nice pictures.

Thanks, FW JSB! I am really appreciating the way the shape of the 85s. For such a small package, they fit my hand very nicely. The blade that it packs is very impressive for the knife's overall size as well. These SFOs made by GEC have really got me hooked! Guys like Mike and Charlie really know their traditional slipjoint folders!

Just chiming in to say you guys are lucky to have such pretty knives:) I've only just come to appreciate the looks of the bullet end jack, and this long pull ez open SFO is now one of my favourite looking patterns after reading this thread. Being in Canada though I can't get them from Collectors. now you've got me trolling through the Exchange and the auction site constantly:D

I'm sure one will come up eventually. I have really been enjoying my African Blackwood linerlock version immensely.

Good luck on your quest!

On a 1-10 scale my single blade is about a 4 or 5. Very pleasant compared to some of my other GEC nailbreakers.
