Combat dagger (custom?) Suggestions?

I would wait to spend any big money , til you have some experience to know what you need and can protect from loss/theft .

Meanwhile , a Cold Steel Drop Forged Dagger world be sturdy enough and work great as a weapon .

But an SRK or Recon Tanto might be more useful .

Congratulations on joining the Marines! I’ll echo what others have said, wait till you get to your duty station before choosing a carry blade. Everyone in your chain of command will have an opinion and you will want to stay on the happy side of their thoughts on knives when it comes to what you carry in the field. Now for mere personal use/collecting I’d recommend you take a look at what Spartan Knives has to offer. They have some of the coolest designs and excellent construction.

How much do those run? I can't find much about them online.

About $300 Australian.

Someone tried to sell one on here.

From my time in the Army (I was in the Infantry but I stayed in the US the whole time, I was just a regular guy not a high speed internet operator sorry to say) I would say that you should just focus on getting through basic training first. If you make it, then wait until you get to your unit. They will tell you what you can have, despite what your recruiter said (in fact, dont trust your recruiter at all!).
Just get a good pocket knife, like a Swiss Army knife honestly. It wont get stolen, and it is more useful. Your buddies wont mercilessly roast you for your Rambo knife either. A big heavy dagger is a pain in the butt to carry, will slice you open while you try to open your MRE, wont cut as well as a good pocket knife (or have nifty little prying tools like a SAK), and will add to your almost inevitable future knee damage if you carry that useless weight around on top of all the other useless weight the Marines will make you carry. It will just take up space that would be better used. Even if you found yourself in a World War 3 action movie situation (you wont) then you would curse the big stupid dagger for taking up space and weight that could be used for water (the most important thing to carry) and ammo (also important I hear).
Just buy a Swiss Army knife. The military is mostly just sitting around and dealing with insufferable BS for a tiny paycheck and future disabilty pay from the VA. You wont be stabbing anyone (except maybe yourself if you use a giant double edged dagger for things like prying, or anything really lol). I was worried about this kind of stuff before I joined the Army too, like if I could carry a personal sidearm from home in my future life as a high speed Ranger. I should have just worried about being able to do more pushups before Basic.

And running. I went in out of shape and it was pretty tough for a few weeks getting into shape. I didn't have to be put into the Porkchop Platoon though like some of them were. LOL!
But he would be wise to start running a few miles a few of times a week to get a head start on bootcamp.

Smatchet!
All the way!
Get an extra in case you wear one out in boot camp.
Semper Fi!

Do you have a good photo of one? Do they all pretty much look the same or do they have different variations similar to a Bowie knife? I've never owned a smatchet.

Hi all! I ship out to USMC boot camp this summer and I am looking for a pig-sticker to carry once I graduate. It would have to be double edged, a good cutter, and darn near indestructable. Blade range 7-8" and preferably coyote tan or black coated. I am looking to purchase two in the unlikely event I lose it. One that caught my eye was the Busse FMV 8 so thats the aesthetic I'm looking for. If there are similar knives out there, or a custom maker who specializes in that type of knife, or even an actual FMV 8 I would be thrilled, but I've hit a dead end searching on my own. Thank you!

How about... an actual pig sticker? Old Hickory Pig Sticker American made for about 10 bucks. You can buy apple cider vinegar to darken the blade. Relatively light weight. I've cut MANY boxes with mine without needing to resharpen and it has been honestly the most useful dagger I own. If you lose it, gets stolen or you're (god forbid) captured or killed and the enemy gets it.. you won't really care. You won't give anyone else underserving a treasure like that Busse. I can tell you that if I were going into the military, into battle I would not take my favorite dagger (Gerber MK 1 35th Anniversary) with the chances of any of that happening.

I have a Cold Steel Tiapan. It is double edge, cuts pretty good for that style blade, SanMai III, isn't the most expensive option out there, of course, but how much edge durability do you need in what is primarily a fighting knife?.. It only has to be sharp once, and for a very short time, I'm told...It's big enough, too..

congratulations on making the decision to join the Corps. It is a big deal. Make sure you are in the best physical shape you can be in before you go to boot. no Big muscles needed. Fitness is needed. Push-ups, body squats, lots of running, pull ups, etc.
Boot is a mind-phuk of a time meant to max you out From all perspectives. Have fun !!
that said………oh yeah…….a knife ????
How about an Entrek close combat MKII ???

I developed an intense dislike for non-locking blades. I've had knives close on my fingers way too many times. I'm not worried about fitness. My 5k is about 18:20 on average and I do sets of 21 chin ups on a regular basis. 4:30 plank isn't a problem either. I'm a small guy 5'6" so that makes it a bit easier. (Edit

I might see if I can actually handle some of the suggestions before I can make a choice. What about a Bastinelli Grozo? I had the opportunity to handle one. It's a little bit thinner than what I was initially thinking. It's .175" n690co will it be durable enough for field carry? In the event I needed a get off me blade would it break on (for example) a plate carrier? It has a fairly wide blade which should balance out the double edgedness. It's a lot slicier than other daggers I've handled. The other options I'm looking at are the Cold Steel Tai Pan or possibly an RMJ Raider. The RMJ and Bastinelli are the most aesthetically similar to an fmv8.

Taipan is broad enough to have a great slashing blade as well as penetration for stabbing .

They made them in 3V also - polished now currently , but also older ones in black blade (DLC) .

My favorite dagger . :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

🙄

If you're going to be that way what about a TOPS Ranger's edge? It's high carbon steel.
