Comments about Bushcrafter Knife Contest Review

KGD,
Thanks man, I am working on making one in 3/16" and 1/8" just to see what I will like. The 1/8" will be scandi grind and slightly smaller.
I am going to make another in 1/4" as well, and taper the tang, and remove a good bit of stock after the half way point of the handle...I think this will change things a bit. It might even aid it in chopping.
Funny...chopping with this little guy.:thumbup::D

I remember all those threads MikeM did with Ban in the big waki-busse chop fests where they would swing swords through water bottles and such. Need to learn that Ban can take the edge to performance attributes like that. No doubt, swinging through 8 full water bottles with an edged tool as a hobby has to translate into a keen respect for wicked sharp! He did a great job marrying that micarta to the G10 liner. Your review really made me want to test out one of Ban's knives. I do admit to not being a huge fan of open pins. I hate getting palm dimples, they interfere with self gratification.... ;)

Cody's blade looks a like a really good rendition of the classic kephart, complete with that classic guard. Nice looking scales!

Just wow.....Nice work everyone.

That Bantang did great! He sure can grind steel. Im happy people are starting to notice that. His edges are wicked, and his F&F is spot on. What do you expect from a guy who cut his teeth moddin INFI. He has to be good in order for those Busse guys to send em pricey knives to grind on. Waay cool Ban.

That Turley is awesome too. Iz is a skilled craftsman. I kinda agree on the handle, but I know that it is hard to make a one sized handle for every sized hand. Get a load of that presentation with the box. Classy iz.

Genes knife looks a bit unconventional. Kinda like Gene. lol. However, it looks like a good blade. Ive seen 1/4in stock with a mean edge before, so I can imagine. Nice work Gene.

Good work to everyone, including the testors. I just mentioned 3 makers, but they are all winners to me. These ones just got my gears turnin this am.

I want to thank the makers and reviewers as these reviews connected me with one of the "smiths" to make a knife for me.

Wouldn't have known about him if not for the great review.

I thought it was for a "ribbed for your pleasure" effect?

:D

Just placed an order for a Gray Wolf #5 today. I'd been toying with picking up one of his blades for a while now, and the contest review pushed me over the edge. Can't wait for it to come. For the prices he offers his blades at, I couldn't afford not to get one:cool:

Cool that is what these challenges are all about. Showcasing the great knives generated by the makers around here and giving us users a glimpse at how they handle as opposed to simply looking at price points and specs.

6shooter, yep that's what I ordered from Aaron (Gray Wolf) and I've been a eyeballing his bro's blades at AA Forge as well.

It was his brother that linked to Aarons website some time ago that got me looking at his blades. Couldn't decide which one I wanted, but the in-hand shots from the contest sold me on the #5:thumbup:

All joking aside, you don't know what kind of agony these challenges put me through, nowadays. I mean, my process is consistant and well tested, so I shouldn't worry. I play it off like I'm all cool and confident, but my guts churn as the results begin to come in:barf:... lol.:D:thumbup:

This is the 3rd challenge that I've submitted a knife for and all 3 have been nerve racking as hell - especially the first one (2009 Camp Knife Challenge). They are a great way to learn for us makers, but a huge undertaking for the reviewers!

Bruce

The challenges provide something unique. There is the opportunity to test a suite of new knives designed with the same purpose all at the same time. The makers are given a heads up beforehand about the types of tasks their designs will be engaged in. The more recent trend using multiple reviewers gives different perspectives to take care of subjectivity issues.

Lastly, and importantly, the scale of this event has been kept low profile enough that it is honest all the way around. Honesty in the makers, honesty and integrity in the reviewers without segways into sales hype. There is a lot of trust that the maker has to put into this process, both from the perspective of donating their knives but more importantly putting their reputation on the lines.

These contests have shown many times the lack of correlation between price point and performance, often a weak but existing correlation between price point and fit and finish and many times a strong correlation between consistency in performance of makers who repeatedly enter different contests.

In short, I don't really think there is really anything like this out there. It calls upon a lot of resources from makers and a lot of time and effort and in some cases expenses (e.g. upgrades to photohosting services) by reviewers. This is the only show in town that offers all this and a tonne of eye candy, informative writing and honest opinion completely lacking in the 'gee whiz look at my new knife' factor. Its a great tradition, and one that I hope keeps on into the future of this place.

Now let's see them reviews:D

Hell yeah

Marcelo needs to get his butt in gear:D

I'll put my last two up tomorrow morning.

Everytime I tried to do it today, I would get busy with work.

He's been working everyday since he's been back from his Anniversary weekend.

He'll get to it, just hang on a little longer fellas.

Okay, I have a comment................ but you aren't gonna like it. It involves friction fire, tinder, proper fuel management and Marcelo's ass.

You know Rick, your gonna need to GO TO Marcelo, to put that fire under his ass....it doesnt seem like he's moving much lately.:D
I hope he had a good "get away" with the wife...cause he's gonna take some flack around these parts!!;)

You all know Marcelo by now, if he hasn't posted them up it's only because his attention is focussed on a more urgent matter. He really is trying and should have a couple of reviews up by tonight. When he is at work Bladeforums is restricted, however I will post them for him as he gets them done. His days off are few and personal things have kept him from dedicating his recent days off to the challenge. He is sorry, but he can't control when and how things happen.

I know you guys are just kidding, I just feel that you deserve an explanation. I break his chops more than any of you could imagine, but after finding out what he is dealing with I decided to give him a brake...

Feel free to pick on me though, I am here for you guys.
