Committed the ultimate knife sin today...

My friend/co-worker who borrowed my knife later to open boxes at first was opening supply boxes with an open pair of scissors, I thought that will cut you quick. As mentioned before she knew how to close it (Buck 112 slim pro with back lock) when she gave it back, I was hoping no staples to hit the edge. I just chose to carry it that day, most of the time I carry a BYRD Meadowlark 2, MAM, or my Opinel 6, less worry when used, so having a user is a good idea.

A man who doesn't carry a knife probably doesn't recognize the value of a knife.

A man who doesn't recognize the value of a knife isn't going to treat your knife with respect.

My rule- Never entrust a knife to a man who can't be bothered to carry one himself.

But even if a man carries his own, I'm still rather discriminating.

Funny you should mention Sam Elliot-

Many years ago, when the E! channel was just starting out, they had a half-hour show called "Q & A". The premise was- a guy with a camera would go to Hollywood events and ask celebrities random questions on camera, and then the celebs were shown giving their answers on the show.

On one episode, one of the questions asked was something like -"What one thing do you always carry with you?".

They asked Sam Elliot that question, and without hesitation, his answer was- "A knife".

Sam Elliot, one guy who always carries his own knife.

Did not know this!

Awesome!

I'm fortunate that I work in a place where people don't ask to borrow my knife. If I did I would carry a POS as a loaner. I've managed to accumulate a few junk knives that people have given me, one of those would do the trick. In the past I've had a few people ask to borrow my knife, I tried to remember asking them what they wanted it for then I would decide yes or no. The only incident I've had- on a fishing trip I was opening some packages and left my knife laying on a table, I turned back around to get it and it was gone. Later I found that my uncle was scraping a big cast iron cooking pot with it. I was not good at sharpening back then and it took me a long time to get that knife sharp again.

Ah yes, the age-old problem: trying to distinguish the worthy from the unworthy.

Ironically, one of the most reliable signs of worthiness is, the person has their own sharp knife, they take it out and use it appropriately, and never ask to borrow yours.

That would be cool to have him say it. I got one, remember him in Tombstone with Kurt Russell? If my knife is broken after someone borrowing it I would say (paraphrased) , “You tell ‘em I’m comin and hell’s coming with me!” That question and answer from Sam Elliott is also classic, didn’t know that either.

I know it’s been said but this is a lesson we all learn. Especially those that of us the pre date the internet

I have a couple decoy chisels in my truck, beater ones with a rough ground edge for loaning to concrete guys or plumbers on the job. They were cheap, buck or two at a swap meet or yard sale. Half the time I just give them one, once in a while I offer to rough grind it for them again after they abuse it.

Meanwhile, my fine honed Stanley 720s stay safely hidden where only I can find them.

Gives me an option other than yelling, “Why don’t you have your own d*mn chisel?”

it just breaks my heart to see old and loved blades broken, not even broken by the owner! The ultimate knife guy tragedy in my opinion.

I get that this is a knife forum but it really blows my mind that people won’t carry a knife. At the very least a victorinox cadet
