Talk to paypal again and explain what happened
I'm sure they will contact him and your refund will be taken care of.

I wouldn't go straight to making a PayPal claim, that might leave a mark on his PayPal record.

No way of telling at this point. You may still be the buyer, there may be a different buyer, or there may be a different buyer and you paid 1st and he sent it to you, but communicated with the other. Just have to work it out.

Hello, I started a thread called communication issues about a problem I am having with Gun man. He posted a thread on Feb. 17th at 1AM for a relist of a Case knife. I saw it at 4 AM and replied back that I would take it and sent the $40 to his PayPal address listed in the thread. I have not had any response from him since and his PM is full. I know he received the funds. He may have sold the knife to someone else or something else, but I am left in the dark as to whether or not I have the knife or what . Could you please help me in this situation I really want the knife, if possible. I have been looking for one like that.

Ooh I didn't know you sent funds without ever communicatng. He may not know the money is there.
Worst case scenario: he never gets back to you and you have to file with PayPal. I wouldn't be too concerned.

And the plot thickens. So you did not even get confirmation from the seller that it was yours? Seems you just sent money to what you thought was his pp address with no contact with the seller. As others have said, he may not necessarily know you exist. Hopefully a mod can message him. Best wishes that this will be straightened out soon. What a mess.

Well, the situation is this, I have been wanting to get a Case 6347 stockman, that is the knife he relisted. I got up at 4 AM on Friday morning, saw that relist and said to myself, Lord there it is! He stated his PayPal address in the thread. I said I would take it and I paid quickly, so as to make sure I got it. I figured he would see it in the morning and get back to me and say it was mine. I have done this before, not that early in the AM. It was an honest, hastily thought , mistake. Hopefully it can come together in a good way for all involved.
