Composite Blade Intro

Is there a production version similar to that Ken Onion knife? I held one from him with a similar design at Blade (not composite, of course), and it felt like it was a natural extension of my hand. I'd love one for EDC, but a few grand is slightly over my EDC knife budget.

storl, here is an image of a custom KO version, and the production ones as well (the gold anodized/carbon fiber one will be the one available). The production version will have a MSRP of $350 (street value on this one should be interesting), and will be out this fall.

Oh and welcome to the forums.

Here's another voice for a production version of the MOAB. Looks pretty different, something I'd be interested in trying out if it ever saw light.

It does bother me that this is how you look at part of your customer base of which you could include me.

It should also play towards those steel snobs as well, plus it looks pretty cool.

If the shoe fits......

There ARE steel snobs on BladeForums, if you want to include yourself in that category, so be it. There is nothing wrong with liking and wanting a particular steel in a knife, and wanting it to be optimally heat treated and ground.

It just is not necessarily realistic for a production environment.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Steve, Thinking like that will certainly put a company in the has beens of the cutlery industry. It is beginning to already. Why else are the knives beginning to come out with the likes of CPM D2, CPM 90, CPM M4, ZDP, Super Gold , YXR7 etc., Etc.

Regardless, making fun of loyal customers is what I was responding to. Why are you answering for Thomas anyway? He's a very intelligent guy and needs no help. When I want to ask you something I will. Joe

Now Joe, you should know that when I use "steel snob" in a sentence, it is always meant as a term of endearment. ;) Heck, I'm a bit of a snob myself.

It is difficult in volume manufacturing to be thought of in high regards by both the masses and the true knife enthusiasts. That could actually happen with this technology. If we can produce a $60 street value Leek with a 13C26/ZDP-189 combination, who wouldn't be impressed? We do hope these composite blades can bring us all to a place of performance that doesn't break the bank.

Now I will caution that we are early in our playing around with these blades, and our initial impressions are quite favorable, but I'm not sure all the answers to the questions are available today.

So, when do these go on sale? I especially like the Chive.

I didn't see a Chive, do you mean the Leek?

I don't think Thomas was making fun of anyone. He was joking. Thomas is a steel snob too, why do you think these new knives are coming out? Kershaw could make tons of profit sticking with 440A and Sandvik, and never bothering with new stuff. Anyone who is a member of Bladeforums is a steel snob to some extent, or we would buy the cheapest knife Wal-Mart offers and never look back.

Thanks! I've been here for a while, just never really posted.

Are there any knives currently in production with that general handle shape? I don't need the combination steel. I really like the curved edges on the handle, which I am guessing are hard to do on a $100 production knife. I don't really care about the blade geometry, as long as it is not a tanto. Anything with a drop point, recurve, spear point, etc. would be fine. I looked on Kershaw's site, but couldn't find anything. It seems like KO has been doing that design for a while, so maybe I just need to keep looking.

Thomas, It's steel Junky. A snob is, a snob. A derogatory term. I have no problem with anything Kershaw is doing , and see a lot of intelligence behind it. I always buy your sprint runs because I like the better steels, but I also read about the difficulties and even loss of money doing them.

No argument from me there, I'm with you. I just must have misread your post. No problems here and I still admire the job you are doing. Thanks Thomas. BTW, Is CPM still stopping further production of CPM D2? Regards, Joe

Joe,

Thats the word on the street. I guess it was a major PITA for them to make. It does not sound like it should be, but from what Scott Devana told me it was indeed. He said the guys in the mill that make the steel were not happy with him.

Joe I looked up "junky" in the urban dictionary, and didn't find any definition that was actually complimentary, well unless "hopelessly addicted" can be used in positive light.:D

Now "snob" brought forth this definition; "Someone who claims to be of higher intelligence than others, understands the finer things in life". Joe, would you buy a folder with 420J2, or are you smarter than that? :p
BTW, Is CPM still stopping further production of CPM D2? Regards, Joe
It is as Tim says. The next little while should bring forth a definitive answer.

They all look great! Probably wouldn't take too much convincing for me to buy all three!

Hmmm...OK you convinced me, took less than I thought.

The MOAB is pretty wild looking. Are the dovetails in the blade, actually dovetails? Or are they just cut in that pattern to look like dovetails?

Not that you don't have enough potential with the composite blade technology as it is, but my mind just reels with the possibilities if combined with MIM!

Tim or Thomas, as long as you are here, in case you missed the dovetail question.

Sorry I missed that question, Oooops! The dovetail is only like you see it. The parts fit together like a puzzle piece and are not dovetailed in two directions. Is that the answer you were looking for???

I also asked about copper corrosion and about what different between your lamination with copper/nickel/gold glue and regular lamination.

...In case you missed that too...

Thanks, Vassili.

Yup, thanks, exactly what I wanted to know.

Didn't think the blade would be thick enough to do a full dovetail, and what a pain that would have been to do. LOL

The puzzle piece cut can't be easy as it is.

Hi Vassili, we are currently running a variety of tests on the composite blades, sorry I don't have an answer for you today.
